Asfa Hits the Charts in Jamaica

New kid on the block Asfa is making waves with the latest entry on the Jamaican Top 25 Reggae Charts. His second singleNot The Life came in at number 23 and is steadily climbing up the survey.

The singer grew up in Bedward Gardens in a small community known as Dread Heights and since debuting with the singleMother I in March of this year has been building a following ever since. After introducing himself with his first song which he did as a special tribute to his late mom the artist answered the call of his fans for a follow up. The result is Not The LIfe. The song is done on a bouncy one drop called the Question Riddim and the theme is a cry from the oppressed due to exploitation by financial institutions. In it he sings "This is not the life for me, tired of living in misery, too much " corporatocracy", " which rings familiar in this age of rising national debt which is often times shouldered by the very poor. The song is receiving heavy rotation on radio and the video has just been added to the Hype TV playlist. Asfa's growing legion of fans can also support his efforts by buying the song as it is available on all major online stores.

Asfa, since launching his career has made promotional appearances on Hype TVs Up and Live and was interviewed on Richie Bs radio show on Hot 102 FM. The song is also Top 5 on The Bess FM Culture Chart. The infectious composition has also not escaped the attention of many radio programmers all over the world and is a staple on reggae stations especially in Australia ,The UK and Germany.

The jovial and easy going artist is no newcomer to the business as he began this musical journey in the early 90s as a selector on Travelers Disco and also made his first steps as an artist opening shows for Judy Mowatt . At the beginning of the next decade he toured with Sugar Minott and Little John in Switzerland and Germany as their dj. The music took a back seat when he migrated to the US where he eventually settled in Jacksonville Florida. However after a number of years out of the scene he is now organized and moving full speed ahead. With a voice that has a unique sound and is easily identifiable , many have commented in social media circles that talent such as his " is a welcome change". Asfa is a pure singer in the tradition of artist such as Luciano and Garnett Silk and aims to live up to the standard of his forbearers.

Working with manager and ex-manager of Natural Black Roger Grant, the artist is optimistic about his future in the business and believes Not The Life will bring him the initial exposure that he needs. At the same time he is wasting no time in readying his debut album titled "Journeying" which he hopes to release on his own label Jecoliah Entertainment Production by years end.

Matisyahu w/ The Dirty Heads and special guest Pacific Dub LIVE at MontBleu Casino Resort Thursday,

September 27, 2012

LAKE TAHOE, NV – MontBleu Resort and PR Entertainment presents Matisyahu w/ The Dirty Heads, and with special guest, Pacific Dub, Thursday, September 27, 2012, inside the MontBleu Casino Resort in Lake Tahoe, NV. General admission tickets will be available for $39.50 by calling MontBleu, 775-588-3515, at the Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com

Since first emerging on the international stage in 2005, Matisyahu has established a reputation for following his muse—from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy ministrations of Youth to the polished pop eclecticism of Light. Then, in 2010, he returned to the venerable Austin venue that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s II, demonstrating that all those travels had somehow only strengthened his connection to his musical bedrock. It was a whirlwind half-decade journey, one that earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture at large.

And it was only the beginning…..Now based with his family in Los Angeles, Matisyahu blasts off yet again with Spark Seeker, a bold new studio album that finds the one-of-a-kind vocalist and songwriter exploring uncharted territory with help from an expansive cast of collaborators. “My musical tastes are all over the board,” he says in reference to a record that mixes ancient traditional sounds with futuristic electro beats, rapping with singing, songs of the spirit with songs of the body. “And, besides, my music has never been about the outer garment. It’s about searching out inspiration wherever it lies. This album is about seeking that spark within.”

Outer garments, of course, long defined Matisyahu in the eyes of many. “I was the Hasidic reggae superstar,” he says with a knowing laugh. So when Matisyahu took to Twitter late last year to post a picture of himself with his new look, he did it with a certain amount of relief. “It just felt good to sort of restart everything,” he says, adding that the transformation actualized one of the central themes of Spark Seeker: the impermanence of the physical form. “The spark seeker digs for truth and meaning and is willing to let go of everything to find it. He’s honest and authentic with himself and lives life from the inside out. He creates music from the depths and doesn’t worry about what category it or he fits into.”

“We live in a world where people tend to think in extremes and categorize with ultimate statements,” Matisyahu says. “While it’s true that at one point it would’ve been pretty accurate to describe me as Hasidic reggae, for most of my career my music has been a blend, a mixture.”  For Spark Seeker—not just a collection of random tracks, but a complete piece of work made with one producer—Matisyahu spent a year recording with Koool Kojak (Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker, Ke$ha) at the latter’s home studio in L.A. Then the pair went to Israel with an open slate. “We booked a studio there and invited various friends and musicians—including Zohar Fresco, Daniel Zamir, Ravid Kahalani and rapper Shyne—to come and simply play music,” Matisyahu says. “We began to blend all of this live instrumentation to create a unique record, made by multi-faceted human beings who have many sides and many sources of inspiration.”

The result reflects that wide array of voices and experiences. In the hard-hitting “Warrior” Matisyahu describes feelings of frustration and desperation, while lead single “Sunshine” rides what might be the most uplifting groove in his catalog; elsewhere, “Searchin’” pairs a gritty digital-dancehall beat with chanted lyrics and “I Believe in Love” exemplifies the album’s deep melodic streak. Throughout Spark Seeker you can hear Matisyahu embodying the album’s title—and embracing its humble promise. The album has a depth to it as well as a lightness, which alludes to the most essential theme of the record--that everything in life, especially music, exists in mixtures and blends.  “Things are not as black and white as we would like to think.  Not everything can be oversimplified," says Matisyahu.  “This is definitely pushing the boundaries of what I’ve done before,” he acknowledges. “It’s a new kind of record for me.” At this point we’d expect nothing less.

On tour with Matisyahu is The Dirty Heads, a Reggae rock band from Southern California with a melodic style that includes hip hop and punk genres. Their debut album, Any Port in a Storm, was released on September 23, 2008, by Executive Music Group. The group is perhaps one of the most prominent groups in a sub-genre of reggae, which is heavily influenced by the original incarnation of Sublime. The group first came into prominence within the rock/reggae scene when their song "Ring the Alarm" was chosen as the first song on the very first Pier Sampler, an offering of free songs that is available for a limited time four times yearly.  The band started out touring heavily in California, Arizona, and some parts of Mexico before it became a national touring act. The Dirty Heads have toured the U.S. multiple times with bands such as O.A.R., 311, Pepper, Kottonmouth Kings, Unwritten Laand Sublime with Rome. The band has also been part of marketing campaigns for Etnies Jeans, Rag Dynasty Shirts and Vestal Watches. The Dirty Heads were among the first bands featured on YouTube's "RAWsession". The set included a cover of Coldplay’s "Viva La Vida”.  Opening the show is Pacific Dub, one of the youngest and newest bands to solidify themselves as professionals within the Reggae-Rock scene.

Doors open at 7:00p, show starts at 8:00p. Tickets are $39.50, and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online www.ticketmaster.com. You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515. This is an all ages event.

Germany's #1 Rising Roots Reggae Act New Album and West Coast Tour

In Germany Martin Zobel and his band, Soulrise have already become an integral part of the reggae scene.  The new album “Land Of The Free” , recorded & produced all analog by reggae legend Fully Fullwood (Peter Tosh, Bob Marley) in San Clemente, CA was released in Europe on May 18th and went straight to #1 on German reggae charts!   But also on an international level  ”Land Of The Free“ created a lot of buzz. Critics even went so far as to write it is the most authentic roots reggae album ever coming from a European artist!!

In fact Fully Fullwood, Martin Zobel & Soulrise created a wonderful musical snapshot in timewhich, in every detail, reveals the spirit that must have been present during those early studio sessions back in Kingston, Jamaica.  Beyond that, one is reminded of a sound, the likes of which hasn’t been heard for a long time, a sound containing something so familiar, yet different, with something new and refreshing – a new breath of life. Now Martin Zobel & Soulrise are on tour in the United States for the first time - and only along the westcoast - so be sure not to miss them while they are around!  Here you can watch a nice little trailer the band put together for their upcoming tour:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6462tD14OE

The album is available in stores across the United States distributed by VP Records.

Tim Jonze On Shuffle … Reggae and Dancehall

Reggae has been making headlines this summer and we're not just talking about Olly Murs doing the Mobot onstage with Madness at the V Festival (though arguably this is reggae in its purest form). One of the biggest stories of all was the Rastafarian conversion of Snoop from Dogg to Lion, and that is where we will start this month's journey through the genre.

(Tommy Lee Pictured)

Reggae takes on many guises, from dub to dancehall via ska and lovers rock, but Snoop's first reggae release La La La (the results of a visit he made to Jamaica with a film crew from Vice) is somewhat traditional: echoey drum rolls, a roaming bass that leads to the offbeat, a pace so stoned it might as well be buying a 24-pack of KP Choc Dips at the off-licence. The old-fashioned flavour is perhaps surprising given that Snoop chose to work with forward-thinking producers Major Lazer and Dre Skull. The latter is an innovative Brooklyn DJ-producer who bridges dancehall, hip-hop and electro.

Groundation Embarks on North American Portion of their 'Building an Ark' World Tour This Fall in Support of Their Latest Studio Album

Through their musical evolution, spanning over a decade and now 7 full-length studio albums, Groundation has developed an international following that has brought people together from all continents, races and creeds. Throughout October and November, the 9-piece Bay Area band embarks on the North American segment of the Building An Ark 2012 World Tour. The 4-week stretch takes them back to their stomping grounds along the U.S. West Coast with one stop in Mexico City and key dates in Hawaii, then to the East Coast for select shows and a festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Already, the Building An Ark 2012 World Tour has seen the band play to tens of thousands of fans on four continents and over twenty countries. Opening acts on the U.S. portion include Trevor Hall and on select dates John Brown's Body. Groundation will be supporting their latest CD Building An Ark and intergrating new songs from the album into their widely acclaimed show.

On Building An Ark, the acclaimed band stays true to the essence of their dynamic sound - capturing the true spirit of roots reggae while combining elements of jazz, funk, latin and transcendental dub. The album’s hypnotic funk-based rhythms move from earthy percussion-based tracks to complex impressionistic dub compositions. This 10-track set is filled with outstanding solos from every instrument and complimenting vocal harmonies. This sophisticated selection of genre-bending sounds provides the perfect template for some of their most fiery militant and conscious lyrics to date.

Last year, Knii Lante happened to be the first ever Ghanaian musician to get an official invitation from Tony Rebel to perform at one of Jamaica's most recognized and biggest reggae festivals, 'Rebel Salute'. Knii Lante was indeed on the line up for the 14th edition of the festival alongside top reggae artists from Jamaica and elsewhere, billed to perform on 14th January, 2012.

The festival begun and ended before Knii Lante entered Kingston, due to visa challenges. But that journey was not fruitless. Prior to the invitation he had already booked his studio session at Grafton. For four weeks he had the opportunity to work with renowned reggae artist’s music producers and sound engineers at Grafton Studios.
