The Capone Mob : DEVIL HAVE THE BLUES

Big News! Devil Have The Blues, the anticipated debut pre-release from The Capone Mob, is touted as one of the most important debut albums of this decade. Downloads are available here.

The Capone Mob, the vision of blues-rock guitar ace Mikey Capone, worked on the music for five years and recording began in August 2011. A result from those first sessions is "White Lightnin" which was named "Best Blues Song" by Backroads Blues and Mikey earning the title of Backroads Blues' "Best Blues Rock Guitarist" and "Best New Blues Artist."

"If I could use only one word to describe Mikey Capone as a guitar player it would be WOW! That guy plays the F%$^ out of that guitar. Like a lightning bolt struck him. Not only was his guitar plugged in but he was plugged in. My jaw dropped watching Mikey play and he is about as tasty as you can get." - Steve Rosenberg

Devil Have The Blues includes “Iron Man,” a powerful, personal tribute to the late Michael Burks featuring deft slide work; “Mountain Man,” a cross between Hendrix and Allman Brothers with a sensational slide guitar solo; “Upon The Crossroads,” a masterful piece about the legendary bluesman who sold his soul to the devil, features a riveting slide intro and memorable guitar work; “Deal With The Devil,” a haunting, unique “call and response” chain-gang-style song reminiscent of the 1920’s, “Me And My Cigar,” a catchy, shuffle blues with flirtatious lyrics; “Good Time Blues,” a fun Rockabilly song; and “Garden of Love,” a melodic instrumental with a Hendrix vibe.

“The Capone Mob’s Devil Have The Blues really delivers. Without question, one of the most important debut blues releases of this decade”.

- Clayton Hamel, Backroads Blues

Devil Have The Blues is scheduled for release November 2, 2012 and a tour is being planned for 2013.

Tas Cru : TIRED OF BLUESMEN CRYIN'

With Biscuit (2006), gravi-Tas (2008), grizzle n’ bone (2009) and Jus’ Desserts (2010), Tas Cru served up more blues buffet than Sunday brunch at the Shoney’s. Time to clear tables, clean that kitchen and stack up dishes!

Tired of Bluesmen Cryin’ continues to solidify his reputation as one of the most unique bluesmen plying his trade today. The album and title track are inspired by a young blues fan at one of Cru’s BITS programs who observed, “I’m tired of bluesmen crying about stuff - stuff that they maybe brought on themselves!” So . . . the eleven songs, for the most part here, celebrate that got to feel good side of blues.

Cru’s love affair with both traditional and modern styles is evident, and as expected, the record appeals to fans of both acoustic and electric blues. Cru is equally at home on acoustic, resonator, and electric guitars and his trademark, rawcuss, Tejano cigarbox. Rich vocals and relaxed, downhome harmonica delivery bring a front porch jukin’ feel to this album. Cru’s ability to craft a lyrical hook is magical and it is not for nothing he’s called "the master of the triple entendre.”

MOCA exhibit: Modern art and culture, inspired by the blues

A visitor views artist Jean-Michel Basquiat's, Undiscovered Genius of the Mississippi Delta, at the Blues for Smoke exhibition at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, CA. The exhibition explores a wide range of contemporary art, music, literature and film through the lens of the blues and "blues aesthetics." The exhibition, which runs from October 21, 2012 through January 7, 2013 at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, features works by more than 50 artists from the 1950 s to the present. (Andy Holzman / Staff Photographer)

(.presstelegram.com) In a gallery at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, a toy train winds its way around a landscape littered with upturned piano lids and a mountain of coal to the music of John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk and James Brown.

Dubbed "Chasing the Blues Train," artist David Hammons' exchange between "music and labor, sound and movement" is in the United States for the first time since 1989 as part of the show "Blues for Smoke" - a major interdisciplinary exhibition several years in the making that curator Bennett Simpson says "is in some ways about the blues" but "may not be the blues that you recognize.

"It's an attempt to put things together that might not always have gone together but could go together; that should go together," he says.

Artist Martin Wong's painting, La Vida, can be seen as part of the Blues for Smoke exhibition at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, CA. (Andy Holzman / Staff Photographer)

Taking its name from Jaki Byard's 1960 album, the exhibition, on view through Jan. 7, explores a wide range of visual art, music, literature and film through the lens of the blues and "blues aesthetics." It features the works of more than 50 artists from the 1950s on, going back and forth between group galleries of different themes and rooms centered on individual artists' major statements.

In the exhibition, visitors will see Stan Douglas' video installation "Hors-champs" (1992). The video captures the "social and political worlds bearing on a jazz performance session, staged and recorded in a Paris television studio, in which four musicians interpret Spirits Rejoice (1965), one of the seminal compositions of 1960s free jazz ..."

There are narratives about everyday life as seen in the tenement windows of Martin Wong's painting "La Vida" (1988) and expressionistic depictions of music legends in paintings by Bob Thompson, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jutta Koether.

Some works simply suggest the blues, including Jack Whitten's "Black Table Setting (Homage to Duke Ellington)" (1974), which he produced by raking devices over a canvas layered with acrylic inspired by the "sheets of sound" he heard in music.

In her first attempt at drawing, sculptor Rachel Harrison pairs Amy Winehouse, the late British R&B star, with the iconic imagery of Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning and others in a series of untitled colored pencil on paper works from 2011 and '12.

And Rodney McMillian has created a walk-in red-on-red chapel room dubbed "From Asterisk in Dockery" - described as "a footnote to one of the sacred homes of blues mythology." That place, Mississippi's Dockery Farms, was where legendary bluesmen Muddy Waters, Charley Patton and Lonnie Johnson were sharecroppers during the 1920s and '30s.

In addition, the exhibition presents a range of listening posts and video stations as well as contextual displays of books, photographs and other documentary material.

"For a long time in the kind of unorthodox art history that we all use there was an unspoken prohibition about voice, and personal expression," Simpson says. "This exhibition doesn't worry about that."

1ST CHICAGO CIGAR BOX GUITAR FESTIVAL NOV 10TH

The first ever Chicago Cigar Box Guitar Festival will be held November 10, 2012 at The Fat Man Bowl in Green Oaks, Illinois. The festival will present over ten hours of live music on two stages as well as a vendor area with CBG makers and artists.

In a world of mass produced, cookie cutter, disposable music and instruments the Cigar Box Guitar stands apart. From the simplest one string diddley bow to finely crafted, highly detailed, 6 string fretted CBG's each one is as unique as it's maker. The styles of music played on them ranges from Delta blues to primitive rock to jug band to gothic blues and beyond.

pat mAcdonald of Purgatory Hill

Co-headlining the fest will be the psychedelic blues of Mojo Perry and Purgatory Hill, fronted by pat mAcdonald. Since his 1987 Grammy nomination for Best New Artist (Timbuk3), pat mAcdonald has continued to write, perform and reinvent himself releasing seven critically acclaimed albums, five with worldwide distribution. The Onion described Purgatory Hill as, "Seriously swampy and electrifying riffs, armed with nuts-and-bolts instrumentation perfect for it's stripped-down, amped-up approach to Alt-Blues."

Mojo Perry ~ Justin Johnson

Over a dozen performers including Stacy Puckett, Justin Johnson, and Husky Burnette along with dozens of CBG builders and artists, will be traveling to Chicago from across the country. Not only will attendees see and meet some of the biggest names in the Cigar Box world but they will have the chance to buy their very own CBG!

The doors will open at 11:00 am and the music will begin at 2 pm and go until 2 am. All this for the incredibly low price of $10.

The Fat Man Bowl is conveniently located at 13860 Rockland Rd near I94 in Green Oaks, Iland just minutes from the Libertyville Metra station. The venue has a full menu with great food and drink specials for the event, friendly staff and ample parking.

NOV 3RD CELEBRATES COLUMBIA's 18TH ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL

Columbia's 18th Annual Blues Festival (hosted by the nonprofit, Word of Mouth Productions) is slated for November 3, 2012 at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park (2300 Greene St.) in the Five Points section of Columbia, SC. This continuous, free concert usually positions itself in the civic calendar on the open date of the University of South Carolina's football schedule.

Word of Mouth has just turned 21. Our first show was a club date featuring Chris Smither. Since then we've treated audiences to a wide range of musical styles - English folk (Pete Morten), Irish traditional (Len Graham/Cathal McConnell), early Euro folk/rockers (Martin Carthy/Dave Swarbrick), Gospel killers (The Campbell Brothers), folk blues (Etta Baker), Miss. Hill Country (RL Burnside), electric Chicago (Hubert Sumlin), La. Delta (Tab Benoit) and a slew of our musical heros from J Winter, J Hammond, D Robillard, the subdudes, D Lindley, Sonny and Leo. Someday, we'll fix what we're missing - Buddy, BB, Bonnie and Taj.

Tom Principato   ~   Eddie Shaw

This year, the power packed guts of our show was booked early - Tom Principato and EddieTurner. Late in September we found Eddie Shaw (with his fabulous guitarist son, Vann Shaw) touring Florida, heading this way, and a group new to us, Swamp Cabbage, 100 miles away and finishing their tour the day before our show. Stay tuned, this is our mid-afternoon treat and, soon to be voted "best sleeper set" of what will be another gracious day in the park.

Eddie Turner   ~   Swamp Cabbage

The 2012 schedule can be found on our site. Please take time to thank the 100 plus volunteers, our lovely local business advertisers and the City's Hospitality Tax grant funding.

27-year old Monterey Bay Blues Festival files for bankruptcy

(bizjournals.com) After 27 years of live music, organizers of the Monterey Bay Blues Festival have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy citing about $290,000 in debt.

The festival, which took place this year from June 22-24 and featured almost 50 performers , is managed by Monterey Bay Blues Festival, Inc.

"This is not about mismanagement or pointing fingers at people," Festival president Julie Paisant told the Monterey County Herald. "This is really about the economy."

In addition to reduced corporate donations and sponsorships, Paisant said fees for entertainers, the venue and the sound system for the festival dug the financial hole deeper. She said all performers at this year’s festival were paid.

The festival owes the venue, Monterey County Fairgrounds, more than $74,250. Other debts include $33,000 for event security and management, $18,000 for accounting and $14,000 for printing services.

"At this point, the festival as it has been known for 27 years does not exist," Paisant told the Herald.

Any hope of recouping losses with big ticket sales crumbled at the festival earlier this year, since crowds were reportedly smaller than years past. The festival did not release official turnout numbers.

A hearing is set for Nov. 6 in Salinas to begin sorting out whether any remaining assets can be liquidated to pay off the debt.
