Crew Call November 2012

SCC's Awards...A Great Time For All!

by Ted Arbeiter

Yes, the 2012 SCC Awards program was an exciting, successful event for all! There was even plenty of talk of this year’s awards being the best awards ever….we think it was.

This year’s event was held at the fabulous Vadnais Heights Commons.  This is a one of a kind venue located in our service area and was the perfect setting for the night’s activities. Over 120 persons attended this year’s event which featured great food from Kane’s Catering, a fun, old school photo booth, live musical entertainment, the SCC awards program, various staff video presentations, and a surprise visit from the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Royal Family and King's Guard.

Making a return to this year’s event was a special video presentation from RWSCC staff to all SCC producers. This funny video presentation was very well received by all attendees and was especially enjoyed by members of the SCC producer family featured in the video homage.

Pictures of the event can be found on the SCC Facebook page, www.facebook.com/scctvAs always, if you would like more information about SCC, feel free to visit www.scctv.org or ask a friendly staff member by calling us at 651.747-3830.

And The Winner Is?

by Ryan Hickok

It has been a banner year for our friends at GTN and On Location TV 19. This year they have received national recognition for multiple programs such as Lake Area Beat, Northeast Journal, and Your Police Report.

The awards started with the Hometown Media Awards sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media where GTN’s Mary Kline and Troy Sepion received their award for “Best of Short Subject.” The winning piece, Memorials for Sgt. Bergeron, also received an Honorable Mention by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA).

In addition, NATOA awarded four other awards to the GTN and On Location staff. Northeast Journal received a Third Place award in the Interview/Talk Show category. In the Children/Young Adults category, staff received an Honorable Mention for a  piece entitled Restoring The Web: Keller Lake Shoreline Restoration. For the Best of Audio/Sound Recording the Laurel and Hardy promo received a first place award, along with a recent Emmy nomination!

And the biggest of all, GTN was awarded first place in the overall Excellence in Government Programming category from NATOA. This a huge win and a great achievement for all the wonderful content that is being produced for the viewers in our area.

We would like to congratulate our colleagues at both GTN and On Location for all their great work!

Studio A Control Room: Audio Monitors

by Andrea Paulet

Lately, we’ve noticed several people have had issues hearing their audio in the Studio A control room. This was due to changes made to equipment by producers. We wanted to remind everyone that the areas behind the racks in the control room are off-limits to producers. If someone changes a setting on one of the monitors, the next person who uses the room will be unaware of the change.

If you have an issue with any of the equipment or think something may need adjusting, please notify staff at the front desk.

Thanks for your cooperation!

A Look At Things to Come...

by Ryan Hickok

There are many things to look forward to with the new cameras that will be coming the first of the year, including the ability to shoot in High Definition. But there are things that you should be mindful of with this move.

HD footage is much larger than the footage you are currently working with. Storage is something you will need to keep an eye on. We always encourage producers to purchase their own external hard drives, but we will encourage this even more now with the amount of space needed to edit HD footage.

Your footage will look a lot crisper with these new HD cameras, but we also have to keep in mind that SCC currently still transmits in Standard Definition. This isn’t a bad thing, because your HD footage broadcast in Standard Definition will still look clearer and cleaner than what you're used to.

This is just a small step in the transition to HD, but it is a first step to many more things to come for your access facility.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of your friendly SCC staff.
