December 2012

 Happy Holidays from the OAC!

The OAC would like to wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season!

Around this time each year, we reflect on all our important accomplishments that have helped us to better help you. But this year especially, we are proud of our efforts that have led 2012 to be a benchmark year for the OAC. It is through your support and your passion that we are able to strengthen the voice of those affected by excess weight and obesity and experience growth throughout the entire organization.

I'd like to take a moment to highlight some of the OAC's accomplishments in 2012:

  • Held our Inaugural Your Weight Matters National Convention
  • Grew our membership to 40,000 members
  • Launched a brand new OAC Web site
  • Re-launched the OAC Blog
  • Held our first National Advocacy Training Session
  • Partnered with Bariatric Advantage to provide more than 1,100 weight-loss surgery patients in need with free post-op vitamins through the RECOVER® program and more than 5,500 weight-loss surgery patients since the program started in 2009
  • Distributed more than 100,000 educational materials nationwide for 2012 and more than 1.2 million educational materials have been distributed since the OAC formed in 2005

  • Visited Washington, DC, 30 times to meet with elected officials to advocate on behalf of those affected
  • Met with the Obama Administration and various federal agencies multiple times
  • Released two new weight bias guides
  • Welcomed our new Chairman of the Board, Pam Davis, RN, BSN, CBN
  • Co-hosted, along with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation, numerous Walk from Obesity events to help raise awareness of the obesity epidemic
  • Partnered with Orexigen Therapeutics on the Take Five to Live Light campaign and welcomed more than 2,500 new members to the OAC through the campaign
  • Launched our Annual Awards Program
  • Started three membership partnerships with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), and The Obesity Society (TOS)
  • Activated our membership on numerous weight bias issues such as: the use of stigmatizing images of those affected by obesity in the media and the presence of "obesity hate" pages on Facebook
  • Grew our online social media presence and launched the OAC's Pinterest boards
  • Made 23 public policy comments, including comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and state healthcare
  • Exhibited at more than 60 health fairs and conferences across the country

Looking ahead to 2013, the OAC has a lot in store for you, including our second annual Your Weight Matters National Convention! We look forward to continuing to be your voice and continuing the fight against obesity. With your help, we can make tremendous strides and reach even more individuals affected by obesity.

Happy Holidays,

Joe Nadglowski, OAC President and CEO

  • Cardio machines at the gym tend to overestimate the number of calories that you expend during a workout.

  • Trans fats (also known as partially hydrogenated oils) are fats that are created as a result of food processing.
  • Even with a good diet, adults 19-50 years of age would need to consume 27 ounces of milk or other fortified dairy products daily to meet the recommended dietary allowance.

  • A common mistake is to underestimate the calories eaten and overestimate the calories burned. Food journaling and logging exercise can help by creating accountability and awareness.

  • Swimming just 30-60 minutes, three to four times per week, can notably reduce your risks of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, as well as lower your resting heart rate, lower your bad cholesterol (LDL), increase you good cholesterol (HDL) and lower your blood pressure.

OAC Thanks Your Weight Matters Magazine Advertisers - Your Weight Matters Magazine would not be possible without the support of our advertisers. In 2012, Your Weight Matters Magazine featured some fascinating educational articles such as, "BMI: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "Obesity Due to a Virus: How this Changes the Game" and "Band over Bypass."

We would like to take a moment to thank all of our 2012 Your Weight Matters Magazine advertisers:

Please Remember the OAC in Your Year-end Giving - The holiday season is often viewed as a time to give to others. This holiday season, show thanks to the OAC by making a tax-deductible donation.

Looking back on the OAC's 2012 accomplishments, none of this would be possible without the support of our members! As a nonprofit organization, donations are important to us. Your financial support helps ensure that our efforts can continue and we can continue as the strongest voice representing those affected by obesity.

No gift is too small and every dollar makes a difference. Your support is greatly appreciated!
