THANK YOU
On behalf of all of those associated with Glory Hound Events, we thank you for a truly amazing and memorable season. So many of our events set attendance records and we are grateful for the support you have shown and trust you have placed in us to produce well organized and memorable events.
If you are like us, you receive a ton of email each day, much of it unwanted. This is the reason we only publish four of these each year, providing you with information we think you want to know to help plan your schedule or be better prepared for the season.

WHAT'S NEW FOR 2013
There are a lot of things happening in 2013 with a few events moving dates and a few new ones joining the Glory Hound Events family.
We are excited to announce that Mission Health will be the new presenting sponsor of the Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake and that the race has moved to one week later on the calendar. Mark June 15 on your calendars for this long-time favorite.
The increasingly popular Scream Half Marathon is also moving one week later in 2013. July 20 is the new date and registration opened on December 1 and we expect to reach the race cap of 350 runners very quickly.
We are proud to welcome two new events for 2013:
- The inaugural Friends of Earth Fare 5K will debut on April 14 to celebrate the creation of their new foundation. We are still working on the course but hope to have an announcement about that soon.
- The Fletcher Flyer will celebrate its 10th anniversary on June 2, 2013 and we are honored to be assisting them with some key elements of this great event.
The McDowell Trails Association is adding a duathlon to go along with its triathlon on May 18 at beautiful Lake James. The new race will start at the same time as the first triathlon wave and will consist of a 3.5-mile run, 22-mile bike and 3.1-mile run. Both run legs are on trails while the bike is on roads that circle the lake. Registration for both races opens January 1 with a two-week early bird discount period where you can save $10 on either race. Click HERE for race information and registration.
The French Broad Challenge Triathlon will become a morning race in 2013, moving from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. The move has been made for safety considerations but the event will be still be part of the Mountain Sports Festival.
Following its very successful inaugural event in September, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has announced October 19 will be the date of the second Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon & 5K. The event drew over 400 participants and raised over $10,000 for the Madison Hornbuckle Cancer Foundation.
A couple of events won’t be returning to our schedule in 2013. The Lake Junaluska Bunny Run and MedWest Triathlon have been taken off the schedule but we hope to maybe bring them back in the future.

LAKE LOGAN NEWS
There is so much happening with the Lake Logan Multisport Festival that it requires its own section.
We are very excited to announce we will host the 2013 USAT Aquathlon National Championships. This is the second time we have been chosen to host the event that will send its winners to represent the USA at the world championships.
As we announced at the races in August, Johnny Keesee, the longtime director of the Lake Logan Episcopal Center, has announced his retirement at the end of this year. To honor Johnny’s contribution and commitment to this event, we will present the Johnny Keesee Award to the most inspirational athlete at the 2013 weekend and all future races.
We have redesigned the event logo for 2013 and incorporated the words, “A Weekend of Champions” to reflect not only the Aquathlon nationals but a new program we are introducing next year. The Champions Program will invite the race champions from selected Set Up Events series to participate in either the international or sprint races. All invited champions will receive a free race entry and placement in the Champions wave that will lead off the races. Please click HERE to read more about this exciting addition that will make the Lake Logan races the fastest in the region.
A good friend of the event, Houck Medford, has released a video he shot at the 2012 event, which perfectly captures the flavor of the event and setting at Lake Logan. If you haven’t seen it yet we encourage you to please click HERE to view it. For those of you who have never been to Lake Logan, this will give you a preview of what race weekend is like.

NEW HOME FOR ASHEVILLE CITY MARATHON EXPO
We are pleased to announced the 2013 Asheville Citizen-Times City Marathon Expo will move to the US Cellular Center in downtown Asheville. The region’s largest running event will be held September 27-28, 2013, with the expo taking place all day Friday. We really enjoyed our two years at the Sherrill Center at UNC Asheville but this move will allow us to manage the logistics of the event more effectively and provide a unique downtown race experience for our runners and their supporters.

RACE SHIRTS – A CHANGING PHILOSOPHY
Like many of you, we recently read in horror the news of the terrible garment factory fire in Bangladesh. The news after this terrible event made us think about where all of the shirts we give away each year are made. We work very hard to provide shirts that are attractive and functional but spend little time considering where they are made.
This most recent tragedy has led us to a change of philosophy where the "Made In" tag is important. We are pleased to announce the collaboration with Asheville-based Recover Brands to supply the Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake, the French Broad Challenge Triathlon, The Scream, Maggie Valley Moonlight Run and Lake Logan Multisport Festival with shirts produced through one of their three programs, which are equally conscious about working conditions and environmental standards. Recover offers men's and women's sizes and we plan to offer this option for all of these races.
We know this is only a drop in the bucket but we hope we can inspire other race directors to consider working conditions and living wages when making their shirt purchasing decisions in the future.
