The Reggae Festival Guide with a Star of "ER"

Happy Holidays!

Here's a photo of actor/director  Eriq La Salle a veteran of "ER,"  "Law and Order" "CSI" and other TV series, with the Reggae Festiva Guide.  Most people recognize him as  Eddy Murphy's Jheri curled romantic rival in the movie Coming to America." La Salle recently promoted his new crime novel "Laws of Depravity" at a book signing at Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco. The event was sponsored by the Coalition of 100 Black Women and the San Francisco Black Film Festival. La Salle said that women are the majority of his readership; behind him are two fans and professional women from the community, Dr. Maxine Hickman (right) and Lee Murphy Reed.

Blessings,

Shelah

Reggae Enthusiasts Pay Big for Poster Art

Jordane Delahaye, Gleaner Writer

Art collectors and reggae enthusiasts alike engaged in a competitive bidding session on Sunday at a live auction hosted at the National Gallery. The auction is part of a two-part fund-raising initiative for the Alpha Boys' School.

The top 100 posters from the first international Reggae Poster Contest were included in the World-A-Reggae exhibition at the National Gallery.  These posters were then donated to the Alpha Boys' School at the end of the exhibition, and according to Veerle Poupeye, executive director at the National Gallery, the gallery is now assisting Alpha with the sale of the posters.  "The sale is being done in two parts: the live auction, which is for the 50 best posters, as well as the contributed posters that were not a part of the contest, and then we are now looking to have part two in February for Reggae Month where the remaining posters will go on eBay," Poupeye revealed to The Gleaner.   According to Poupeye, Alpha was selected as the beneficiary for this initiative because of the seminal role it plays in the development of Jamaican music.

"Alpha is a Jamaican success story and shows how social adversity can be turned into something that is very productive for society. This is just a way to give back to Alpha as we find that it is taken for granted. It is sort of assumed that it will always be there but, as with any organisation, especially with the current recession, they do have challenges," Poupeye said.  Jamaican reggae veteran Bunny Rugs lent his support to the cause by opening the auction with a short performance that was very well received.  The auction began slowly as the first bid of the afternoon did not come until the fourth poster, a tribute to BeresHammond and his hit single What One Dance Can Do, was shown.

The same bidder then went on to win another eight posters and was by far the most competitive bidder of the evening.  It may shock some to know that the enthusiastic bidder was a 12-year-old.  Chance Saulter explained that despite his tender years, he was a reggae enthusiast and was attracted by the old-school reggae imagery which the posters highlighted.  Overall, it was a successful auction and the approximately 43 of the 64 posters that were on offer were sold.  The most popular poster was a tribute to former director at Alpha and inspirational reggae musician, Sister Ignatius.  The contributed poster, by renowned artist and designer Luba Lukova, was sold for a whopping $66,000 to the young Saulter.

More than $500,000 was raised at Sunday's auction.

UK Reggae Singer Sandra Lobban Shoot Video in Negril Jamaica

British based reggae singer Sandra Lobban known for her 1980′s hit singles “Another Dirty Trick” and “Make You My Man” recently made her first ever trip to Jamaica to shoot the video for her hot new single entitled “This Is How I Want It” on the Music Gallery Record Label.  The video which was directed by Chris “Icey Jace” Campbell of Icey Jace Film Factory was shot on location in Negril Jamaica at the amazing Tensing Penn Resort situated on the Western End of the popular tourist town.

Lobban who was accompanied by her longtime manager Nathaniel “Blue” Bell expressed joy at shooting the new video in Jamaica. “Right now I am really happy to be here, im truly amazed by how awesome this little island is and its wonderful we had a chance to shoot the first official video here. My manager and I are pleased with the location, talent and overall production of the video so I can hardly wait to see the finish product”.  “Let Me Show You How” is the first single from Lobban who says she took a break from music to raise her kids. “After the success of my songs in the 80′s I took a break to be with my family and raise my children. Now they are all grown so I decided to continue doing what I love which is making music”.

The video for the single is expected out later this month.

Di Sandy Mix

Recently hurricane Sandy visited the island of Jamaica and devastated the region leaving many without homes, water and electricity. Inaddition to the destruction in Jamaica, the storm also passed through Toronto, New York, Haiti and the Bahamas, affecting each territory in its own way.

DJ Dalvy, being a resident of Portland Jamaica, one of the most affected areas on the island, decided to do a Sandy mix tape. Her hope is that it will show those impacted that this too shall pass.
