The Reggae Festival Guide with

On a day like 12.12.12, anything can happen.  Remember "Age of Aquarius?" "Stoned Soul Picnic?" "Wedding Bell Blues? "Up, Up and Away?" "You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)?"  RFG reporter Shelah Moody caught up with Grammy winning vocal duo Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., formerly of the psychedelic pop group 5th Dimension, at the annual Colors of Christmas concert at the San Francisco Symphony.  Acclaimed Zimbabwean dancer Ronnie Daliyo (right) of the Chinyakare Ensemble, got in on the photo op, too.  Incidently, McCoo and Davis are celebrating 43 years of marriage!

Happy Holidays!

Gwen Stefani & No Doubt Team up with Fred Perry to Design Reggae Clothing Line

by Rose Curiel

Courtesy: Fred Perry; Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

It looks like Gwen Stefani's No Doubt bandmates are following in the fashionable frontwoman's footsteps and trying their hand at design.  Together with Stefani, who helms clothing line L.A.M.B., the band has teamed up with British brand Fred Perry to create a capsule collection inspired by No Doubt's musical style. But how exactly will the band's ska, reggae and punk-rock roots translate into a clothing company best known for its preppy polos?  Think slim-fit tops trimmed in reggae-inspired dark gold, red and green stripes and pops of punky plaids. And if, like us, this collaboration had you scratching your head over what seems like an odd-couple pairing, it may surprise you to know these aren't the first rockers to team up with the clothing company; Amy Winehouse designed a retro line with them back in 2011. Plus, it turns out the No Doubt band members have long been Fred Perry fans.  Gwen Stefani talks balancing family, fitness and fashion  "Fred Perry is a classic inspiration that has been part of our style since the beginning," Stefani explained. "Doing this collaboration is an honor."  The band's collection of polos, sweaters and jackets roll out early next year.

Kingston, Jamaica. Reggae icon Toots & the Maytals receives a 5th Grammy nomination for his first ever acoustic album featuring many of his classic hits. Arriving just in time for his 70th birthday celebrations this Saturday, the 2013 nomination announcement was broadcast live from Nashville last night. This nod for Best Reggae Album follows Toots’ most recent accolade bestowed on him with the distinguished Order of Jamaica in Kingston on October 16th.

Toots & the Maytals’ Reggae Got Soul-Unplugged on Strawberry Hill (Metropolis Recordings/ D&F Music/PHREE Music/Isis Productions/) is joined by other distinguished nominees Jimmy Cliff (Rebirth), Sly & Robbie (New Legend-Jamaica 50th Edition), Sean Paul (Tomahawk Technique) and the Original Wailers (Miracle) for the 2013 Best Reggae Album category.

Winner of the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Reggae album with the all star duet album True Love, Toots & the Maytals’ ‘Unplugged on Strawberry Hill’ features acoustic performances of such classics as Sweet and Dandy, Monkey Man, Time Tough, Bam Bam, 54-46, Pressure Drop and Do the Reggae -the 1968 single widely credited with coining the word ‘Reggae’ and naming the genre.

Recorded and filmed live on Chris Blackwell’s iconic Strawberry Hill property, framed by the Blue Mountains overlooking Kingston at sunset, this unique CD/DVD includes the filming of this historic recording session, along with the first ever official documentary of the artiste’s story beautifully told by director George C. Scott with linear note contributed by Grace Jones.

In Jah´s Name We Pray

The power of acceptance

"It is permissible to take life's blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God gives and takes away... As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content."

-- Meister Eckhart

"Sometimes what seems like surrender isn't surrender at all. It's about what's going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain of not being true to it is far, far greater."

-- Nicholas Evans
