Download Awards Dominate 2012’s G&P Tally

In another sign of a growing and dynamic digital music marketplace, the RIAA awarded more download honors in 2012 than ever before in Gold and Platinum program history. This includes a 70 percent increase during the past two years, a 25 percent increase year-over-year, and a record breaking 139 digital songs certified Platinum in 2012, according to RIAA’s recently released year-end certification tally.

The RIAA also awarded a number of esteemed album certifications, including a prestigious Diamond award for Adele, whose “21” (XL Recordings/Columbia, 2011) became the first album in a decade to sell more than 10 million units in less than two years!

Taylor Swift earned 2012’s top album release certification for “Red” at 3x multi-Platinum, while Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye tied for the year’s top song release by each earning 6x multi-Platinums for their respective hits “Call Me Maybe” and “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
