Thanks to everyone who signed up for the 2013 Advanced Level-1 sailing class.  The response has been great and all 10 class spots are now full and confirmed for this season.

I will be contacting the students directly with more information in preparation for their classes.

Centerboard launch date is Saturday May 4th - - Jessica Hogg

Ahoy All, It's that time of year again to get the boats back in the water. Saturday May 4th is the Level 1 Launch day at Kensington Metro Park. Please come out and help us get the season started, meet some new friends and reunite with your seasoned sailors.

We will begin at 900 Saturday morning at Crawford Farm, which is located in Milford, see map below (Directions if you're driving west on I 96, take the 155 B exit north toward Milford. A couple of miles north, turn right on Buno Rd, a gravel road. Go one mile to South Hill Rd, also gravel, and turn left. Crawford Farm will be about 300 yards north, on the left. Pull into the drive, and park behind the outbuildings) and finish the day up over at Kent Lake around 1300.  There is a lot of work to be done, so all are welcome, so we can make this another smooth and successful launch.

For any questions, concerns or comments please contact Jessica Hogg at swtpeablue@aol.com. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and getting another great sailing season underway."

Sea you all soon.

Jessica Hogg,

Level 1 Launch Coordinator.

Where's Crawford Farm?

Our work in getting the Interlakes ready for Kent Lake continues this coming Saturday at Crawford Farm. But where is Crawford Farm?

If you're driving west on I96, take the 155B exit north toward Milford. A couple of miles north, turn right on Buno, a gravel road. Go one mile to South Hill, also gravel, and turn left. Crawford Farm will be about 300 yards north, on the left. Pull into the drive, and park behind the outbuildings.

We'll be starting around nine and will work for 2 or 3 hours, depending on the weather. See you there!

Ahoy Centerboard Sailors! - - JoAnne McClure

It is time to prepare for instruction for the 2013 season. If you have been rated for at least one season, please consider providing instruction for upcoming sailors. Our Instructor seminar will take place on Wednesday, May 15 at Wayne State University Oakland Center from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. All current and prospective instructors are encouraged to attend. Following the shore school class, we will arrange for water practice before classes begin, probably on the morning of May 18 at Kent Lake.

If you have not attended the training recently and would like a copy of the documents, please send an emai to JoAnne McClure (je-mcclure@earthlink.net) to get an electronic copy before the workshop.

Remember, this class prepares you for becoming an instructor and it is Level 1 instruction that grows ASI.

Interlake boat prep and more - - John Tiley

The L1 boats masts are all pointed toward the lake ready to go. The weather was perfect, old friends meeting up again and a lot of prep was completed.

Don DeRyckere had installed the dock lines last week, Thank you ! Don Sharpe delivered the new Racers dock box, Sherri Gregory re-keyed the locks as we all prepped boxes after installing masts and booms on the L1 boats at the farm.

Thanks all and a Special thanks to Kimberly T. for the fresh fruit and to Farmer

Bill Crawford for being there and supporting us every year, moving trailers is a snap with his tractor. Be sure to say hey to Bill this Saturday.

We also took member pics for a new members only photo directory. Be sure to get your photo taken next Saturday at L1 Launch. And be ready to hear about this years Open House as Susanne and Dan G. head up that event with a updated view on an All Club tradition. This years Open House is July 13th, after the Milford Parade. We seek willing volunteers for both events.

Also I'd like to mention a new event this year. The Saturday after L1 put in we are holding the 1st of 3 "Meet and Greet"/sails. This is for everyone but especially for the students, new L1's and mentors, (anyone giving practice sails or tests,) at 9am to say Hi, mix it up a bit and get any sailing/club questions answered and a "tune-up" sail. This 1st event Saturday May 11th will also be a joint bag lunch with the racers at noon. Then hang out or watch the new racers at 2pm learn about the starting line and practice. So watch for two more "Meet and Greets" and come welcome our new students into our club. The dates are set on the calendar and occur after the classes last water class.

Spring has sprung! We're almost there!

Here are some dates to put in your calendar. We assemble at Crawford Farm at 9 am each Saturday in April (that's where the Interlakes are stored for the winter). If the weather cooperates - which it hasn't, so far - we generally work for 2-4 hours:Finish bo

  • Saturday, April 27 Remove shrink wrap, trailer dockboxes to the lake, install dock lines, power wash the committee boat
  • Saturday, May 4  INTERLAKE LAUNCH DAY ! All hands on deck!

Work should be greatly eased due to the work done last fall in shrink-wrapping the boats.

We'll need lots of hands on deck this Saturday and for the Interlake launch, so be sure to enter these dates in your calendar. Spring's here!

The 2013 Race program - - Michael Golden

New L1 skippers are getting into racing next season as novices.

Racing is a fun way for new or experienced skippers to refine their sailing skills. One learns sailing by doing it; having another boat sailing nearby at your performance level is a great teacher. You don’t have to get competitive about racing to gain confidence in your ability on the helm.

New racers must attend the basic seminar in April, and a practice, to skipper in the early races, when you are ready. You will be racing against other novices. There is no racing fee for newly rated Level 1 members from last season. Returning racers pay $25 and prev rated members $15 for the season. To sign up, reply with your name, rating, and years of sailing/racing experience to mgolden6@mac.com.

Morning races end by 1 pm. Seven or fewer boats are used so some are available during races.

A few more things...      Don Caley, Burgee editor

What did the Buddhist say to the hot dog vendor? 'Make me one with everything'.

Who writes the Burgee? YOU DO! I'm only the editor, copy-and-paster, and spiritual advisor. I depend on you sailors - old salts and newbies - to send in content. What kind of content? Just about anything you'd like your fellow members to know about. Of course, it should be related to sailing and boating! When in doubt, send it in for consideration!

Please send your Burgee input to asidon@comcast.net for inclusion in the next  Burgee. They're on a weekly schedule - or not, depending on content! Send in your stuff for publication by Sunday for inclusion the following Tuesday. Or whenever. Sail hearty and often, and don't let your jib luff!
