What Do Polys Want?: An Overview of the 2012 Loving More Survey

Polyamory Research Survey Background

From February 10th to April 2nd 2012, Loving More, with the endorsement of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) conducted an internet-based survey of over 4000 participants who self-identify as polyamorous. This is the largest survey of self-identified polyamorous individuals to date. Individuals were recruited through local and regional listserves, Loving More email list, the PolyResearchers list, the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality’s (IASHS) student and alumni lists, and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists’ (AASECT) AltSex list. With the exception of five questions, all the questions were drawn from among those asked in the NORC’s[1] biennial General Social Survey (GSS) in order to compare a sample of the polyamory community with the general US adult population.

Support Polyamory Awareness

Dear Polyamory Community,

In 2004 I took over a great organization for polyamory support and awareness, Loving More®, that was on the verge of closing its doors. With Loving More® my goal was to make polyamory a household word. With the help of a trusted advisor we started a campaign to do regular press releases and draw attention to polyamory as a movement and a real possibility for many people in relationships and family lifestyle. The work we did in 2004 and 2005 started as a trickle when the press releases brought in articles by the Denver Post, Baltimore Sun and the Chicago Sun Times. These articles led to more interest and press releases from Loving More which continued to fuel the interest. Loving More worked with Montel Williams, Tyra Banks and other shows to find polyamorous individuals willing to talk to the press. Many of the articles in the past five years have come directly from Loving More press releases and many of the folks interviewed have been connected through Loving More.  We do so much of this behind the scenes so as to not distract from the message of polyamory awareness.

We have done this and much more to support polyamorous people and bring polyamory awareness to the forefront. We could not have done this without the financial support and donations of a few wonderful individuals and the community; we continue to need your help! The timing of the survey and the Supreme Court pending decisions on marriage equality will focus more attention on the polyamory movement and who we are. We need your help if we are to keep this momentum going and use the current wave of interest to propel polyamory as a real option for people in loving relationships.

We want to sponsor more surveys that delve deeper into what real polyamorous relationships are about. We want to support people in creating relationships and families that thrive through education and information at conferences, events and online webinars. We want to help make the world safe for polyamory individuals and families to be out and not face losing their children or job.

All of this takes funding and support from the community. Lack of sufficient funding continues to make our job more difficult. Many months we are fighting just to keep the lights on and the website up. At this time there are no grants or foundations that provide funding for polyamory; all of our support comes through donations, donating memberships and event participation. Your support donations and memberships are our lifeblood to future studies, media outreach, education and support. Please help us to keep the momentum of polyamory awareness and support going by becoming a monthly donating member, making a donation or becoming a sponsor. Monthly memberships start at just $10 and that ongoing donating membership of $10, $20…..$200 makes all the difference in Loving More Nonprofit being here to educate and support the polyamory community and polyamory awareness.

Thank You for Your Support,

Robyn Trask

Director, Loving More
