Greetings From Your Editor...

Those Crazy Blues ...

While you here in the US are celebrating this Memorial Day Weekend at various events, please remember to pay at least a silent tribute to honor those who have died while in active military service. Blessings also to those families that have lost loved ones.

I'm not sure if I even want to try and tie-in National Escargot Day (May 24) to the blues, but May 25, 2013 is International Jazz Day and that, we can attest to blues origins. I think it's widely understood that Jazz is one of the offsprings of early blues. Okay... so how hard is it to create an International Blues Day? Well finally, thanks to NYC Blues Society Prez and musician Johnny Childs, the inaugural International Blues Music Day is set to happen this coming August 3, 2013. Festivity reports forthcoming.

Birthday of note: Maime Smith (May 26) was the first black vocalist to record the blues. The song was "Crazy Blues" and it sold 10,000 recordings the first week and 75,000 within a month. it was a hit! It was just by luck that Smith got the call when Sophie Tucker, who was orginally scheduled, fell ill. Perry Bradford, the songwriter, convinced Okeh Records that Smith, a vaudeville actress, singer and dancer could "sell" the blues. "The recording of "Crazy Blues" led the way for the professionalization of black music, for the black entertainment industry, and indeed for the immense popularity of black music today," says Angela Davis, former activist and current author and teacher. More info...

Talk to ya next week!

CD & DVD Releases

Gina Sicilia :: It Wasn't Real

Dynamic roots music singer/songwriter Gina Sicilia newest release, It Wasn’t Real, on the VizzTone Label Group, expands her burgeoning career as one of the most creative, exciting and diverse artists in the genre today. Produced by Grammy-winner Glenn Barrett, It Wasn’t Real was recorded at Morningstar Studios in Gina’s hometown of Philadelphia, and features the singer backed by a cadre of local all-star session players who bring a soulful intensity that matches Sicilia’s emotionally-charged vocals.

The new album’s nine original songs showcase Gina’s growth as a songwriter who can deal with universal themes of love and fate, but is able to inject a personal deep-felt longing throughout with her commanding vocal style. The lone cover is a scintillating re-working of the great Etta James’ 1961 hit, “Don’t Cry Baby.”

Considered a true rising star in the blues world ever since her debut album, Allow Me to Confess, brought her world-wide acclaim in 2007, Gina manages to raise the bar even further with It Wasn’t Real, throwing down a music gauntlet of soul, power, grit and energy for others to follow. Her songs and performances gracefully cross genres on the new album, too, with echoes of soul, rock and even Americana woven throughout the tapestry of sound she’s created on the new disc, bringing Gina’s music to an even wider audience.

Marshall Lawrence :: House Call

Known internationally in his profession as the “Doctor of the Blues,” Marshall Lawrence operates with a guitar instead of medical instruments. The Canadian Ph.D. in Psychology espouses a holistic approach to music that not only cures what ails you, but is a preventative as well. His latest release, House Call, follows the critical accolades for Where’s the Party (2003), The Morning After (2008) and Blues Intervention (2010) with a timely visit from the good doctor. The latter two releases charted in both the Top 10 on Canada's Roots Music Report and Top 10 on Roots Music.

The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist presents 11 originals and two covers spanning acoustic country blues and R&B backed by Dave “Hurricane” Hoerl (harmonica), Russell Jackson (upright bass), David Aide (Hammond B-3 organ), Barry Allen (background vocals), Dwayne Hrinkiw (drums) and special guests, the legendary Holmes Brothers.

Maple Blues Award Nominee and Canadian Independent Music Award Nominee, Lawrence is a true “Prairie Bluesman." He performs acoustic slide and finger-style blues and roots with a true and genuine blues feel. Marshall Lawrence accurately calls his music “Neo-Delta Blues & Roots.” As an inoculation against the ills of the modern world, House Call delivers a shot of blues power directly to the soul.
