Councilman Valenzuela Guest of Honor at the 2nd Annual Your Weight MattersSM

National Convention

Joining us at this year’s Convention is Councilman Daniel T. Valenzuela of the City of Phoenix. Councilman Valenzuela is spearheading a new health initiative FitPHX, which emphasizes the importance of obesity, nutrition, education and more. The OAC is pleased to have an elected official so devoted to promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents of his city attending Convention this year.

Councilman Valenzuela is eager to participate in the 2nd Annual Your Weight Matters National Convention. "I am humbled to have been asked to participate in this year's Convention," said Councilman Valenzuela. "I am an advocate for taking a proactive approach to healthcare, and getting down to a healthy weight is one of the most important steps someone can make. We cannot have a healthy city, state and country without healthy people. Programs like FitPHX, and conventions like this, offer support that can really move people in the right direction."

In addition to Councilman Valenzuela, the 2nd Annual Your Weight Matters National Convention will host experts from across the United States to speak on topics such as:

  • Food Addiction
  • Science Behind Willpower
  • Weight Bias
  • Weight Management
  • Body Contouring After  Weight-loss
  • And many more!

For three days this August, attendees will have the chance to learn all the latest evidence-based weight management techniques. With so many topics on the Program Agenda, the opportunity to earn up to 14 continuing education credits, and sessions which allow you to interact one-on-one with leaders in the healthcare field specializing in weight, the 2nd Annual Your Weight Matters National Convention is perfectly placed to offer something for everyone interested in attending.

  • Recent research from the American Society for Nutrition shows that eating white vegetables is just as important as adding color to your diet.
  • Owning a pet can improve your health! There is evidence that it decreases your risk of heart disease.
  • Exercise does not need to be painful to be beneficial. Taking a walk, working in the garden, or anything else that gets you up and moving is a step in the right direction.
  • Shopping when you’re already hungry leads to higher-calorie and low-nutrition purchases. Make sure you have a snack before you head to the grocery store.
  • Portions are important and most restaurants serve large amounts of food. Consider boxing-up half of your meal to-go before you begin eating.

New Blog Series on Weight Bias Begins Today The OAC is proud to announce that we will be hosting a brand new blog series by Melinda J. Watman, BSN, MSN, CNM, MBA. It is often difficult to deal with bias in our everyday lives, and this series will help us all get a better understanding of these issues.

Melinda will provide readers with an in-depth look at weight bias and invites others to join her in the conversation. “This series will help us confront and deal with the weight bias we encounter in everyday life. Join us as we explore the personal relationship we have with bias, whether experiencing it ourselves or witnessing it in our culture,” said Melinda.

Celebrating Eight Years of Advocacy

Eight years ago the OAC was formed to be the voice for individuals affected by obesity.

Since the doors first opened, the OAC has grown swiftly and we are proud to have distributed more than a million educational pieces, advocated on Capitol Hill through more than 200 visits, built a membership more than 42,000-strong, and created the Your Weight Matters brand featuring the highly sought-after Your Weight Matters Magazine, the PREMIER educational event - Your Weight Matters Convention, and the Your Weight Matters Campaign educational initiative.

Much of what the OAC has accomplished throughout the past eight years has come through the strength and support of active membership. Active members of the OAC receive many benefits including the sought-after resource Your Weight Matters Magazine, e-news alerts, and the members-only e-newsletter Members Make a Difference.

If you are not a member of the OAC, we invite you to join us today by clicking here. If you are a member, we thank you for your support and invite you to renew your membership by clicking here.

We look forward to many more years of working for the cause and continuing to champion the millions of Americans affected by the disease of obesity.

Why Does My Weight Matter?

With millions of Americans affected by excess weight and obesity, it is time to start considering the impact of weight on your health—or the health of someone you care about. Many conditions can arise from excess weight and obesity, including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and more. Most people do not realize they are at-risk for these conditions until it is too late.

The OAC has produced the Your Weight Matters Campaign, an educational initiative which encourages all Americans to have the conversation of weight with their healthcare provider.

This Campaign includes FREE resources for participants who sign-up to take the Campaign Challenge online. If you or someone you know wants to address their weight, this is an opportunity to begin the life-long journey to a healthy lifestyle. Everyone is welcome to participate, so take the Challenge now by clicking here!
