Charting the Water Future of South Asia

Water is, and will continue to be, one of the critical drivers of peace and stability in South Asia in the decades ahead. 

This was the topic of discussion at a recent workshop entitled “The U.S.-South Asia Leader Engagement Program: Charting the Water Future of South Asia.” Held April 28 to May 3 at Harvard University, the workshop was co-hosted by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, the Near East-South Asia Center for Strategic Studies and the John F. Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region

The "Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region: China, India and U.S. Perspectives" workshop, held May 21-23 in Honolulu, focused on three key issues in the maritime realm: geopolitical challenges, transnational security concerns, and multilateral cooperation. The goal was to help develop common understanding and identify common approaches to maritime security cooperation between the three major stakeholders of the Indo-Pacific -- the United States, China and India. For this workshop, APCSS brought together a cross-section of 39 practitioners, policymakers and scholars from the three major maritime powers for candid exchange in a strictly non-attribution environment. APCSS employees honored for excellence at FEB Luncheon

Lt.Gen. (Ret.) Dan Leaf appeared on "Asia in Review" to discuss APCSS programs this recently. You can listen to a copy of the livestream broadcast here....

 

Dr. David Fouse was interviewed by Voice of America on the debate in Japan over constitutional changes.

 

Dr. Jeffrey W. Hornung had several articles publish recently. "Japan’s North Korea Policy Yields Smart Politics, Questionable Diplomacy" appeared on the World Politics Review website. His commentary "The Silent Treatment Won't Stop Japan" appeared on The National Interest blog as well as "Japan's New Security Role in Asia."

 

Dr. Alexander Vuving was quoted in a THANH NIEN NEWS articles  "China sends giant fleet to East Sea, endangering fish stocks"  and "China's power play will up East Sea ante: analysts."

 

APCSS faculty members recently went to Quantico, Virginia to assist with security cooperation training for more than 200 students from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. Ms. Jessica Ear, Maj. Doug Krugman and Maj. Jaime Popphan provided background information on the region in support of the course exercise.

ASC 13-1 concludes with 101 new alumni

One hundred one senior military and civilian government leaders from 38 locations, one international organization and one regional organization graduated today from the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies “Executive Course: Advanced Security Cooperation.”  

 

Attending the regional security course were participants from: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, China, Colombia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Western Samoa, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the United Nations.  Read more....
