The General Assembly
UPDATE HB 74, the Regulatory Reform Act of 2013: Last week HB 74 passed both the Senate and the House and is on the Governor's desk. Part II, Section 5 would prohibit city and county governments from requiring private contractors to pay a living wage or require paid sick days which would directly impact living wage policies in Durham and Asheville. While living wage laws do not negatively impact businesses because the city or county absorbs the higher cost of the contract, living wages positively impacts our community. When more people are paid a living wage, fewer people are reliant on public assistance. More people are economically self-sufficient and are positively contributing to the local economy.
The provision in this bill regarding living wages is just one provision in a 68 page bill. This bill is one amongst many of the bills that have come out of the NCGA this session that negatively impact a just and sustainable local economy. As we join together with other concerned citizens in Western North Carolina on August 5th, our hope is to stand against negative public policies and continue to find new ways to build a just community. In the words of the NC NAACP, 'Forward Together, not one step back'
