Greetings from your Editor...
Rich with blues...

The blues does not discriminate between love or money, time or space. Brownie McGee once warned, "If you lose your money, please don't lose your mind." Son House figured out, "If I don't go crazy, I will surely lose my mind." Evil lurks among the good... it's just life and sometimes our desires can get the best of us.

On August 16, 1896 gold was discovered along the Klondike and Yukon River in Canada. The news triggered a "stampede" of would-be prospectors and 100,000 headed to the area to get rich. Towns sprung up, a significant one being Dawson Creek. Among many pitfalls, (like people going mad), the first major fire was started accidentally by (apparently quick tempered) dance-hall girl Belle Mitchell who threw a lantern at a woman. She also accidentally started a second major fire a year later (yes, another lantern-tantrum) which destroyed a total of 40 buildings. A newspaper article stated that 2,000 men "worked like Trojans to put the fire out!" A poignant visualization. Many of the towns people had to live in tents the rest of the winter. Now that's an evil gal!

Sing it Belle... "I'm an evil gal, don't you mess with me. I'll empty your pockets and fill you full of misery." Skip James might answer, "I'd rather be the devil than be that woman' man." Sonny Terry's parting words? "I was burned once in 1944, but woman I ain't gonna let that happen no more. I'm a burnt child, and I'm afraid of fire."

Money, love? Everyone needs it to some degree and, yes, those things don't change much with time. Some search for the pie-in the-sky and some set the world on fire (but not always in a good way). Music can often heal the lovesick or take our mind off that dollar-desperation. Some just deal with it like Rabbit Brown... "I've done seen better days but I'm putting up with these."

Blues makes me feel rich and gives me hope... what about you?

Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

CD & DVD Releases
Dana Fuchs :: BLISS AVENUE
New York-based blues-rock singer Dana Fuchs has released Bliss Avenue on Ruf Records. The follow-up to her 2011 label debut, Love to Beg, Bliss Avenue showcases Dana’s magnificent pipes in all their power-edged, soulful glory, laying bare her innermost feelings with provocative and thought-provoking lyrics, backed by an incendiary band led by her long-time wingman and guitarist, Jon Diamond.

All of the songs on the new album were co-written by Dana and Jon and continue to explore areas that are very personal to her, yet universal in their appeal and substance. “If there’s one line that sounds thrown away or dialed in, it has to be redone,” says Dana. “Every word needs to express the emotion of the song or no one will get it and that leaves me cold.” Read all about it here

RB Stone :: LOOSEN UP
Swaggering musicians have posed as ramblers, desperados, outlaws and bad dudes. But heavyweight bluesman RB Stone was an authentic cowboy and his muscular music bucks hard and shoots straight. He has notched countless accolades and accomplishments in a variety of genres and his 16th album, Loosen Up, shows the extraordinary singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonicist in the company of ace producer and drummer Tom Hambridge. The combination is flint on steel for a blues-busting blowout.

Along with Hambridge, Robert Britt (lead guitar), Tommy McDonald (bass) and Jefferson Jarvis (piano, organ) play like their hair is on fire on ten original numbers.
