TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Dog days...

August 26th is National Dog Day. This day is intended to honor dogs for all that they do for us and to help rescue dogs in need. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways: They are watchdogs, they lead the blind, they aid in search and rescue and more.

Dog references have often played a part in music lyrics... as faithful companions, "talkin' 'bout my dog, he's a good ol' dog" (Elvin Bishop); as an invitation, "baby, let me be your salty dog" (Mississippi John Hurt), "I wag my tail and come running to you baby" (John Lee Hooker); as ultimatums, "I want the whole dog, I won't be satisfied with just a piece of tail" (Roxy Perry), "no more doggin' foolin' around with you" (Roscoe Gordon); wayward dawgs, "you ain't nothing but a hound dog" (Big Mama Thornton); revelations, "I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me" (Bobby Blue Bland) and many more references and innuendos.

There's even a "Hound Dog Blues Festival" in Tulsa, OK Sept 21-22. Woof...

Birthdays of note: Aug 22: John Lee Hooker (1917)and Debbie Davies (1952), Henry "Son" Sims (1890); Aug 24: Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (1905) and Wynonie Harris (1915), Aug 26 Jimmy Rushing (1901); Aug 29 Dinah Washington (1924).

Ah yes, dog days... the sultry days of Summer.

Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

Tommy Z :: SOMETIMES
Contemporary electric blues guitarists swagger as the aggressive nature of the genre and the searing sounds squeezed from the instrument go hand in hand. Included is the unspoken challenge of measuring up to one’s peers, let alone the legends from T-Bone Walker on. Be reassured, Tommy Z from the wilds of Western New York passes every test of his mettle with cool determination forged in part by his unselfish service to his country. The son of a Viet Nam vet, he has been performing concert tours overseas to US troops since 2003, including in some of the most war-torn locales on earth, and his second album, entitled Sometimes, shows his deep soul and unquenchable burning passion.

Jeff Jensen  :: ROAD WORN AND RAGGED

Jeff Jensen has been a musical work in progress for over a decade, blending Blues, Soul, West Coast Swing and Americana into a mature sound that now defines his latest highly-anticipated release, Road Worn and Ragged.

Having moved to Memphis, TN from Portland, OR just two years ago, Jeff immediately began touring with Beale Street staple Brandon Santini and recently co-produced and co-wrote on Santini’s acclaimed album This Time Another Year.

Recording almost entirely live at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Jeff subtly emphasizes substance over hype, all the while never shying away from the extreme energy and honest emotion that he is well known for.

Cassie Taylor has the blues in her blood
Denver Westword - It was just like a Thanksgiving miracle, to be honest," says Cassie Taylor, recalling the first time she played bass. Her father, famed Boulder-based bluesman Otis Taylor, and then-bandmate Kenny Passarelli were messing around with "Hey Joe" when a teenage Cassie walked in and said, "Well, that's kind of a cool bass line. I like that." Passarelli showed her the bass line, handed her the instrument, and, with a little effort, she played it note for note.

Petaluma Patch - An iconic blues singer who lives in Petaluma and was attacked at an East Bay blues festival last month, is at the center of legal claims totaling $10 million dollars.

Lester Chambers, the former lead singer of the Chambers Brothers soul band, was about to perform the band's rendition of “People Get Ready” at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival on July 13 when he was attacked by a 43-year-old Barstow woman. Chambers said he was dedicating the song in honor of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old black youth who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Florida last year.
