Blues Festival Guide
 Sept 5, 2013   Vol 8/Issue 36
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
 Good mornin' lil' schoolgirl...

Well, it's back to school for the majority of those that are enrolled somewhere. Even if you or your kids are not, it's also a time to be more cautious out on the road when kids are out on the streets before and after school en masse.

This could be a time to dig in a bit and learn more about some facets of the blues that moves you. There's a plethora of sources out there brimming with tidbits to full-on back stories of the far-reaching roots and the what might be the future of the blues. It is truly amazing how blues has impacted the world around us on many levels. Sept 6 is "Fight Procrastination Day"so might as well dive in.

Lots of birthdays of note: Sept 5 Sunnyland Slim (1907), Sept 6 Jimmy Reed (1925), Sept 7 Little Milton Campbell (1934) and Latimore (1939), Sept 8 Harmonica Fats (1927) and Guitar Shorty (1939), Sept 9 Otis Redding (1941) and Inez Fox (1942), Sept 10 Roy Brown (1925), Sept 11 Barbeque Bob (1902), Sept 12 Alger "Texas" Alexander (1900) and Gus Cannon (1883?), Sept 12 Maria Muldaur (1943), Sept 13 Charles Brown (1922).

Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

CD & DVD Releases
Sugaray Rayford :: DANGEROUS
Texas-born Sugaray Rayford may be a new name to blues and music fans outside of his current Southern California base, but he's got the blues as deep and wide as his commanding, gospel-drenched voice.

His new Delta Groove release, Dangerous, represents a cross section of classic and contemporary, originals and seldom-heard covers, all representing the truth at the core of Sugaray's blues soul. From the Son House classic "Preaching Blues" and post-war gems from Junior Parker, Gatemouth Brown and Pee Wee Crayton, to well-honed originals like Sugaray's own "Stuck for a Buck," "Need a Little More Time" and "I Might Do Somethin' Crazy" …it's all killer, no filler.

Phil Gates :: LIVE AT THE HERMOSA SALOON
The test by fire for any blues musician is before an audience, holding nothing back while reaching to produce a cathartic experience. When the performance is recorded, however, it must hold up to repeated listenings. Los Angeles singer, songwriter and guitar dynamo Phil Gates more than withstands the scrutiny with his devastating live set before a riveted crowd in Southern California.

On his eighth release, Live At The Hermosa Saloon, the Chicago-born artist delivers an 11-song set of tough and tender originals spiced with two cool covers backed by the heavy grooving Ron Battle (bass), Keith Williams (drums) and Morris Beeks (keyboards).

News Flash
Sept 7th Blues fete to help feed San Diego
UTSanDiego/George Varga - Time simultaneously flies and stands still when it comes to the blues. But who would expect anything less from this internationally embraced American music, the vital foundation for rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop and more? Timely and timeless, historic and very much of the moment, the blues chronicles everyday life with earthy eloquence and no-nonsense spunk. It celebrates good times, laments the bad times, and helps lift listeners when they’re down by capturing the resiliency of the human spirit.

And then there’s the third annual AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival, which takes place Saturday at downtown’s Embarcadero Marina Park North. It features a fetching mix of legends (Blues Hall of Famers Jody Williams, 78; Billy Boy Arnold, 77; and Charlie Musselwhite, 69), newcomers (Nikki Hill, 28, pictured here) and under-sung veterans (Lucky Peterson, 48). Their vibrant music should transform the bayside park into this weekend’s largest and most rousing outdoor party.

But this party has a serious goal: to raise funds and supplies for the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, which serves 325,000 people monthly. That’s why admission to Saturday’s all-ages event is $15 and two cans of food.
