Are you looking for an opportunity to do more?  Have you ever wanted to have a part in nurturing the growth of ASI – our unique and wonderful club?  Do you have ideas for making us even better?

Join the ASI Board.  We are looking for members interested in running for one of the three seats opening on the Board this year.  If you would like to throw your hat in the ring to be nominated, or if you have an idea for someone else who you believe would be a great Board member, send a note to David Barbour (davidbarbour@yahoo.com) or Peggy Clark (peggyjcl@yahoo.com).

We know we have some (all?) great minds in this club, let’s put them to good use!

The last Tuesday morning sail of the season & lunch together at Kent Lake! - - Paula Meredith
Come out and help us say goodbye to the season on October 15 which will be the last Tuesday morning sail of 2013. We'll sail and then have some lunch at the lake...... cider, subs and donuts....... as we celebrate another great season. We meet at 10:30am to sail and will lunch around 1pm. If you can join us, send me an email so we have an idea how many we'll have. Paula M
Handling wet sails - - John Tiley
Last Tuesday I went for a nice sail at Kent. We had a good turn out of members and students and great fall weather. I watched several boats rig and at least one(or 2) had wet sails, odd but it happens. Then I rigged my boat, box 2 & 3, and found both the main and the jib was very wet and in the bag. As I checked further both spinnakers were very wet and at the bottom of the pile  the Log Book was totally water logged.

So I assume it rained (Sunday maybe?) since our normal submarine sail practice wasn't on the calendar or 3 boats had capsized....

So heres a gentle suggestion;
If sails are that wet....call someone or email me so that the next group can open the box and dry everything out. Next lay the sail bag down and place the loosely rolled wet sails on top of the bag to help it dry. Finally move the log books to the side or up high to keep them dry.

Thanks for keeping our boats nice.

Centerboard decommissioning 10/19 - - Jessica Hogg
The Level 1 decommissioning at Kensington will be Saturday October 19th at the East Boat Launch. All are welcome, students and rated members. We will begin at 0900 and should have things wrapped up by 1300. I am looking for Station Leaders and Haulers, if anyone is interested please let me know ASAP.

Thank you and sea you all soon, Jessica
We have a date for the '70/30' party! - - John Tiley
The sailing may be coming to a close soon but don't think the season is over just yet. Our monthly off- season 70/30 Home Party has its 1st house and date Saturday Nov. 23, 2013 at 6pm. This is our 2nd year of these meetings(the 30% part) and thanks to Kathy Chrzanowski we have a great home to party in(the 70% part).

This is a Pot Luck party for the whole club with a focus on the L1 program. We welcome all levels including students and hope every level will share a bit about their program and experiences. The format is casual and fun and eating together with tall tales followed by a short meeting or presentation. (or challenge Kathy on Guitar Hero).

If you have a fun or informative presentation or topic or any discussion item please let me know. For example this years Open House was hatched here, and Thanks to Dan and Susanne as leaders and the great turn out of volunteers of all levels, was a great success. One topic this year might be doing more community outreach, like a Habitat for Humanity Build, or help the park in an event. Have you ever been to Stony our sister lake? Maybe we plan a joint event at Stony for next year. If you have a possible community project let us know.

Come on out, meet some new friends, enjoy some food and keep in touch with that old scoundrel of a sailing mate during the off season. And bring your questions, suggestions and Ideas to improve the club or share something about sailing.

A few more things...      Don Caley, Burgee editor
Interlake take-out is happening on Saturday, October 19. Old salts, newbies, wannabees, please plan on coming to lunch afterwards at the Caley's! It's been a great sailing season; let's celebrate it. Put it in your calendar. Details to follow!

Who writes the Burgee? YOU DO! I'm only the editor, copy-and-paster, and spiritual advisor. I depend on you sailors - old salts and newbies - to send in content. What kind of content? Just about anything you'd like your fellow members to know about. Of course, it would be nice if it related to sailing and boating! When in doubt, send it in for consideration!

Please send your Burgee input to asidon@comcast.net for inclusion in the next  Burgee. They're on a weekly schedule - or not, depending on content! Send in your stuff for publication by Sunday for inclusion the following Tuesday. Or whenever. Sail hearty and often, and don't let your jib luff!
