Greetings from your Editor...
Blues cruisin' on Sweetest Day...

The South Florida Blues Society will host the Blues Cruise Pre-Party Thurs., Oct. 17, featuring and All-Star Guitar Lineup! The South Florida Blues Allstars: The Joey Gilmore Band, Albert Castiglia, Joel DaSilva, Josh Rowand and David Shelley at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport Hilton, 8p-1a, $10 cover cash bar. The Legendary Blues Cruise #21 then sets sail Friday from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, roundtrip to Key West (1st weekend of Fantasy Fest), New Orleans (until 2am!) and Progreso, Mexico (closest port to Mayan Ruins). Music, scenery, parties, friends, dessert buffets (LOL!). Geesh, do think they'll have a good time?!

For the rest of us mortals, this third Saturday in October is cause to celebrate Sweetest Day if we'd like to do something extra nice for someone. Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started this holiday in 1922. Kingston wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged to show these people that they were not forgotten.

Now a gift of a box of chocolates or taffy chews is not to be confused with Mississippi John Hurt's "Candy Man Blues. However... "His stick candy don't melt away. It just gets better, so the ladies say." Well, hush ma mouth.

Lots of Blues Birthdays of Note this week: Oct 18 Chuck Berry (1926) and Jessie Mae Hemphill (1923); Oct 19 William "Piano Red" Perryman (1911); Oct 20 Jelly Roll Morton (1890), Bugs Henderson (1943) and Vasti Jackson (1959); Oct 21 Steve Cropper (1941), Elvin Bishop (1942), Michele Lundeen (yer faithful editor); Oct 23 Rufus "Speckled Red" Perryman (1892), Boozoo Chavis (1930) and Carol Fran (1933); Oct 24 Sonny Terry (1911), Willie Mabon (1925), Bill Wyman (1936) and Jimmy Dawkins (1936)

I caught the lovely writer Julie Jenkins and Kennan Shaw (bassist for Candye Kane) at the Sin City Soul & Blues Revival in Las Vegas as they were checking out, offering them some reading (and planning) material for the trip home. Julie and Kennan were volunteers at the DME Stage.      Photo: Michele Lundeen

Roosevelt Sykes :: THE ORIGINAL HONEYDRIPPER
Considered by many to be the father of modern blues piano, Roosevelt Sykes enjoyed a career that spanned some sixty years. In 1929, at age 23, he was one of the earliest blues pianists to record. In the following decades he went on to became a very prolific recording artist, a highly successful bandleader and later, a popular solo artist. He was a pioneering pianist responsible for the classic songs "44 Blues," "Driving Wheel," and "Night Time Is the Right Time."

The Original Honeydripper was recorded live in 1977 in the small basement blues club of the Blind Pig Café in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was recordings and performances such as this that led to the formation of Blind Pig Records. Originally released on LP, this re-issue, with improved sound quality, also contains two original outtakes, "St. James Infirmary" and "Don't Talk Me to Death," that have been marvelously resurrected.  Read all about it here

Snarky Dave & The Prickly Bluesmen :: BIG SNARK
Snarky Dave has been there and back…writing about his life experiences and putting them to modern blues riffs. As a creative word master and songwriter, Snarky Dave’s motto is “I won’t write a song without a worthwhile message.” After writing snarkcastic lyrics for years, he decided it was time to produce Big Snark. “I’m not a jukebox and I’m no Guitar Hero”, Snarky says. As his name states, this guy is a true Snarky a$$...but he comes by it honestly and his Snarkcasm is sprinkled throughout his work.  Read all about it here

Riz Orkestra - From Symphonies to Roots Americana and Every note in Between
Lisa Morgan/Coachella Valley Weekly - I have often heard of artists referred to as a “savant,” a connoisseur or master, if you will, of their chosen field or art. I had never actually met one before. Riz Orkestra changed that. Eyes closed, the look of pure joy streaming from his face and feet keeping time to his original music masterfully played on his personally customized electric slide guitars, Riz transported himself and took the audience with him to a century old Mississippi front porch. He works the blues like a preacher works a prayer with songs like “No More Credit at the Liquor Store” and “Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me.”. Impressed as I was, I had only tapped into the surface of all that is Riz Orkestra. Humble and unpretentious as they come, it wasn’t until I sat down and interviewed this soulful individual, that I realized I was in the presence of a master.
