Blues Festival Guide
Feb 13, 2014
Vol 9/Issue 7
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Blues Hearts...

The day of romance, or lack of it, is upon us. I've read that the roots of Valentine's Day goes back to ancient times when people paid honor to the Roman God of Fertility. It's hard to avoid February 14 whether you're attached or single. Heck, any day is a good day for flowers and chocolates but this day you might want to make a point to step up. If you find yourself solitary, you could always buy a bag of "conversation hearts" and end each one of the sayings with "in bed" before popping in your mouth... ya know, like you do with fortune cookies! You know, don't you? Well if not, you should. Alas, Feb 15 is "Single Awareness Day!" Really, I think one could figure that out the day before! The 18th is National Battery Day." Who thinks of this stuff (no, I'm not going there.)

"Ruler of my heart... robber of my soul, oh where can you be, I wait patiently." (Irma Thomas)

February is also Heart Awareness Month. Blues songs I found right off were about broken hearts but there's got to be ones about pounding hearts, right?
Have a great week... celebrate your love for the blues by recalling your favorite blues love song.

Birthdays of Note: Feb 14 Magic Sam (1937), Maceo Parker (1943), Feb 15 James "Kokomo" Arnold (1901), Feb 16 Bill Doggett (1916) Feb 16 Bill Doggett (1916), Feb 17 Lou Ann Barton (1954), Noble "Thin Man" Watts (1926), Feb 18 Irma Thomas (1941), Feb 19 Sam Myers (1936), William "Smokey" Robinson (1940), Feb 20 Jimmy "Papa" Yancey (1898).

Michelle "Evil Gal" Willson :: FORTUNE COOKIE
Michelle "Evil Gal" Willson... she's baaack with Fortune Cookie. Michelle Willson is a force of nature -- an emotional ball of talent that inspires you with her original songs and takes you on a journey through what she calls the lost music of vintage soul/R&B legends like Dinah Washington, Ruth Brown and Etta James. A writer in the respected Allmusic.com once put it this way: "Her singing is like a strong cup of Joe -- it beelines to the gut and jolts the system.”

Known to blues lovers internationally as "Evil Gal," Michelle is acknowledged by aficionados of Jazz and Blues as a passionate and gifted performer, bandleader and songwriter. Willson has had a remarkable career. Read all about it here...

Eddie Cotton :: HERE I COME
Contemporary Mississippi blues musician Eddie Cotton, Jr. has combined university training with service in his father’s church and a love of the blues to produce commanding music of fiery intensity and power. Following his spectacular 2000 debut Live at the Alamo Theater and Extra in 2002, Here I Come shows the triple threat singer, songwriter and guitarist breaking out and up to establish serious credibility as a major new star demanding and deserving to be heard.

Cotton performs 10 uniquely original tracks backed by Myron Bennett (bass), Samuel Scott, Jr. (drums) and guest artists Grady Champion (harmonica), Carlos Russell (harmonica) and Sam Brady (organ). Read all about it here...

Blues In The Schools Honors Black History Month
Homer Tribune - For the past 36 years, Michael “Hawkeye” Herman (lt) has taught Blues in the Schools programs to more than half a million students in more than 500 schools. He’s visited learning establishments from elementary to college level, in 30 states and 10 foreign nations. “All popular music has its roots in the blues,” Hawkeye said. “From rock to pop — and even to country music.” Lesson plans apply blues music to fields of study including African American studies, English, art, math, science, American history and music. The goal of the program is to teach students the history and importance of the music. Read story here

Detroit's WCSX fires longtime blues host Mark Pasman
The Detroit News - Mark Pasman hosted 'Motor City Blues Project' for 26 1/2 years. Detroit loses another veteran radio personality, as Pasman, longtime host of WCSX-FM (94.7)’s “Motor City Blues Project” was fired last week by the station. The show, with its “Anything blue will do” tagline, aired from 7 pm to midnight Sundays. Because Pasman is a musician as well, it was a reliable way to find out what was happening in Detroit’s blues scene and virtually the only outlet for local blues releases to be played. Pasman says he was informed of the move in a “three-minute” phone call. He asked to do one last show in order to thank musicians and listeners, but was turned down.

Two other performers -- Mississippi hill country patriarch R.L. Burnside and the intense and inimitable Robert Pete Williams, will also be inducted May 7.
