On April 7, the OAC officially opens registration for YWM2014 and YOU can make arrangements to attend! With more than 50 topics on the educational Program Agenda this year, the OAC Convention has something to offer for everyone. If you want to know more about improving your weight and health, the Your Weight Matters National Convention is your chance to learn all the latest evidence-based strategies for weight management.

We’re excited to share with you a few of the renowned speakers
this year:
  • Arya Sharma, MD, PhD, FRCPC – Keynote: Health is Not Measured in Pounds
Widely acknowledged as a global thought leader in obesity, Dr. Sharma authored more than 350 scientific publications and is a sought-after speaker and media expert on obesity and related issues. In his spare time, Dr. Sharma is the author of a well-known obesity blog and a stand-up comedian. We look forward to two insightful and entertaining sessions from Dr. Sharma at the 2014 Your Weight Matters Convention.
  • Michelle May, MD – Mindful Eating: Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat
Dr. May’s interest and expertise stems from her personal struggle with chronic dieting and negative body image and her years of clinical experience with patients battling yo-yo dieting. The critically-acclaimed author of a book series and training program in mindful eating, Dr. May offers specific strategies for all attendees at YWM2014.
  • Merrill Littleberry, LCSW, LCDC, CCM, CI-CPT - Vision is Vital: Challenging Falsely Acquired Thoughts
As one of the most talked-about presenters of the past two OAC Conventions, we are pleased to welcome back Ms. Littleberry to the 2014 Convention where for the first time she will lead a general session! Ms. Littleberry is a licensed psychotherapist and understands the debilitating effects of emotional and physical weight. She provides insight and expertise to improve the unique goals of one’s mind and body.
This is just a small sample of the kind of high-caliber education that is available at this year’s Your Weight Matters Convention! We want you to benefit from all that Convention has to offer this September 25-28 in Orlando, Fla. Registration opens next week, so mark your calendar and get ready to register! • Regular exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer for women and has been shown to protect against other kinds of cancer - as well as heart disease!
  • Canned fruits and veggies offer health benefits as much as fresh produce - and sometimes is even better for nutrition.
  • Learning to cook can help you save money and give your more control over what goes into your food.
  • Hidden exercises can be found right in your own home! Briskly vacuuming, scrubbing, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn and more can help burn calories.
  • We need Vitamin C daily, and the best way to get it is to eat at least five servings of fruits and veggies.

Thanks for Supporting the OAC’s Advocacy Efforts in Georgia –For more than two years, the OAC has been working toward a restoration of bariatric surgery coverage for Georgia state employees. During this time, OAC Advocates have reached out to their elected officials to support this important legislation – and we want to take this opportunity to thank ALL of you for your contributions!

We are proud to say that these efforts in Georgia resulted in the passage of HB 511 that would partially restore the benefit. This legislation is now on its way to Governor Deal’s desk for his signature!

The OAC mission is to provide education, advocacy and support for individuals affected by obesity. Throughout the history of the organization, the OAC has championed greater access to obesity treatment options and we are happy to see the progress of this legislation in Georgia.

We know there is still much work to be done to advocate for the 93 million Americans affected by obesity, and only by working with our partners and through the efforts of our nearly 50,000 members, can we hope to achieve our vision. There is a place for everyone in the OAC community, so if you would like to add your voice to advancing the cause of obesity, please join or renew your membership today by CLICKING HERE!

OAC President/CEO Joe Nadglowski Discusses Weight Bias – Weight bias is prevalent in every part of life for individuals affected by obesity – in schools, the workplace, and even healthcare. The OAC’s vision is to create a society in which individuals of all sizes are treated with respect, so the OAC is always actively involved in combatting weight bias and educating the public about the dangers of weight stigma.

Recently, OAC President/CEO Joe Nadglowski participated in a panel discussion about, “Obesity, Weight-loss and Body Acceptance.” This conversation about the issues surrounding obesity and weight-loss was broadcast Nationally this month along with the release of a new documentary on bariatric surgery. You can learn more about obesity treatment and the issues surrounding obesity and excess weight by watching this great talk.
