Food For Thought
IQulah
Salem House Records (2014)
by Bret Lueder

He’s gone under the radar, yet he’s straight in your face. He’s gone around the traditional success mechanism and been through the mill because of it. Going into deep spirituality as a Jamaican Rastafarian, roots reggae singer IQulah’s messages are out of this world.

On his sixth CD release, Food for Thought, IQulah has recorded not just a collection of roots reggae gems, but messages from the Creator in the form of song. “Judgment” is a powerful track; the slower beat creates a penetrating, rolling sound. IQulah (a.k.a. Raymond Charles Topping) moans, “Earth-quake! Cy-clone! Hurricane! Vol-can-ic-ash!”  Then he describes the way in which the people will be judged, “Redder fire judgement/Non-partial judgement/What you get is what you seek/ Jah judgement is so sweet /Jah judgement no tek side with clique.” No matter your race color or creed, better shape it up or face Judgement, says IQulah in the name of The Almighty. Heavy stuff, for sure. Also, in the bouncy, uptempo-ska of “No War,” IQulah philosophizes, “There is no le-gi-ti-mate reason/that can just-i-fy war.” Who can argue with that? And does it get more straight-forward than that?

Then, in “Tormented Souls,” the Nyabinghi riddim only works to underscore the seriousness of the message. “Tormented souls only live a lie….. Tormented souls only surface by night/Moving like a creech owl inna them cavehole.” The anti-drugs and alcohol message is dominant. All of these messages are serious in one way or another simply because this man is on a mission.

And to further prove it, he presents a second Nyabinghi-based track, a somber dirge about being a man called, “Grown Man Cry.” The heartbeat “riddim” sets the tone as IQulah laments, “I live my life, I hold my stride/My dignity, my levity never slides/Pains my heart to see a grown man cry/ All he knows, he tries.” There is an amazingly pertinent triple arrangement of flute, trumpet and saxophone which works to enhance the emotional effect as well.

IQulah’s Divine moment came at age 8 after seeing the Emperor Selassie I while the Emperor visited Jamaica for the first time in 1966. “When he stepped off the train,” described IQulah in an inspired tone, “his feet never touched the carpet.” At age 10 he ran away from home and school to live in the hilly jungles of Maroon country in the interior of the island. He learned how to live off the land earning him the nickname of “IQ” from the band of refugee young men and boys who banded together out in that rough jungle. He could make a meal out of anything, he recalled. There, fueled by nature and Divine providence, IQulah learned to sing and play music. In the jungle, the mighty jungle, IQulah learned to keep it tight.

In his late teens, he left Jamaica for Geneva, Switzerland because he had a feeling; and he knew to trust these feelings after years of tuning into himself, and nature. During his visit, not knowing where he was going or why, he randomly meets a member of the exhiled Ethiopian Crown and was welcomed as an honorary family member. Now totally convinced of the divinity of his inspiration and concurrent journey, IQulah fully commits to his musical direction. And seven CD’s later we have Food For Thought, a very-well balanced offering of some of the best in roots reggae.

At times IQulah’s voice has an almost-whiney twang; not as nasally as Eek-A-Mouse but more so than Bob Marley. At other times it is slightly rusty, too. Yet either way, the notes he hits are crisp and clear when sustained. In addition, he employs this vocal effect throughout the album where he can flitter (as I call it); as the held note trails off from the human sound range you get the hypnotic impression that it continues into some other dimension. It’s almost bird-like in certain places.

On the lighter side is the faster-paced and uplifting ditty, “She’s Always There.” While on the one hand this song captures the seriousness of finding a good woman, it also get’s you moving your body as if controlled by the rhythm. And this brings up a pertinent point: IQulah’s music and songs are inherently dualistic. For those that get it—that IQulah is on a spiritual mission to spread the loving vibes and alternative world history of Haille Selassie I as the Second Coming of Christ and Saviour of humankind—the music and lyrics hold a special significance on their own spiritual journeys. In the meantime, for those that don’t get it (and for everyone else, too), there will be plenty of tunes to dance and celebrate to on Food For Thought.

All musical arrangements on Food For Thought were put together by long-time studio producer for IQulah, Paget King, and IQulah’s beautiful Empress Sarah Topping. As an award-winning pianist and cellist from Jamaica, “Empress Sarah,” as IQulah refers to her, handles all of the live-performance band arrangements for the Gideon Force Band as well. Rock solid, seen?

Check out IQulah as he hits the stage with Julian Marley, Perfect, Christafari, Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi and DJ Smoky in South Lake Tahoe this coming April 20, 2014 www.tahoewellnesscoop.org for tickets.www.IQulahrastafari.com

Sgt Remo Releases Official Music Video “Rastafari Way”

April 3, 2014 marks the release date of Sgt Remo’s latest video titled Rastafari Way. This video is his latest music as featured in the Reggae SoulJahs Worldwide Vol 2 compilation album released in January, 2014 by Jah Yutes Entertainment. The video was directed by Jonathan Sims from No Reservations Productions (Albuquerque, NM). Rastafarian painter Ras Elijah Tafari served as art consultant for the video. The video was filmed in and around New Mexico and features murals and paintings from mural artists 360, Rel Ease, and Ras Elijah Tafari. One of the primary visual/artistic topics found in the video are the controversial Olmec heads found in Mexico. They are featured in several of the scenes throughout the video.

The song takes the audience into Sgt Remo’s personal journey as he professes the strong influence the Rastafarian culture has had in his personal life. One of the most striking lines in the song states “Rasta to the bone and that me swear, no locks ‘pon mi head still I man no care…” Sgt Remo is a Mexican born Reggae artist born in the border town of Juarez, Mexico. He is a unique character. He doesn’t wear dreadlocks and is not of Caribbean decent. Still he has been successful in making a stir in the Reggae community recently with several successful releases under his belt. This is his third official music video following his two previous efforts titled Thunder & Lightning and No Man Stranded from his debut EP Life is for Living. Visit the official website www.sgtremo.com for more information on the artist.
