Greetings! The Dmitri Matheny Group is working hard and having a ball, presenting over 100 concerts and workshops this year on tour. Warm thanks to all of you who joined us for April's epic Michigan adventure. Come see us this month in Arizona, California, Washington and Oregon. Sunday, May 4 at 3:00 pm Join us in Sedona as we commemorate the life and artistry of composer/pianist/bandleader Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (photo), "one of the most influential figures in American music" (All About Jazz). Thursday, May 8 at 7:30 pm Duke Ellington week continues in Scottsdale as we remember "the most important and beloved composer and songwriter in American history" (All Music Guide). Sacred Grounds Jazz Coffeehouse at Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ is a casual neighborhood venue which presents new concerts every Thursday evening. More Info
Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11 at 2:00 pm Bring Mom and the whole family to a free afternoon show as the Dmitri Matheny Group puts their soulfully swinging spin on classics of American Popular Song. Friday, May 16 at 8:00 pm The DMG plays The Great American Songbook, favorite Broadway and Hollywood hits of the 1920s through the 60s, including works by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and more. Sunday, May 18 at 7:00 pm The Siskiyou Music Project presents a salute to two of the most inspiring instrumentalists in modern jazz: guitarist Jim Hall and flugelhornist Art Farmer (photo). This special tribute concert highlights classic repertoire from the seminal Farmer/Hall Quartet of the early 1960s together with a sampling of Hall's own strikingly evocative compositions. Saturday, May 24 at 8:00 pm First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of Art Farmer, Dmitri Matheny has matured into “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” (San Francisco Chronicle). Matheny will appear with an all-star ensemble featuring David Valdez saxophones, David Goldblatt keyboard, Chris Finet bass and Todd Strait drums (photo). Sunday, May 25 at 4:00 pm The Jazz Project Art of Jazz concert series presents Grant & Matheny. Since their 1998 debut at New York's Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the classically-trained duo of pianist Darrell Grant (photo) and flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny has solidified their reputation as "pioneers and champions of the chamber jazz movement" (Public Radio International). Exploring the lyricism, the swing, and the soul of songs, Grant & Matheny blend the intimate elegance of European chamber music with the playful spontaneous spirit of American jazz. The duo will appear in the Encore Room of Bellingham's Mount Baker Theatre, a beautifully restored 1927 architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More Info
Tuesday, May 27 at 12:30 pm Jazz at the PUB! Dmitri Matheny will appear as guest soloist with the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble (photo) under the direction of Dr. David Jones, performing works by Matheny, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. Founded in 1961, Peninsula College offers a variety of academic and cultural programs serving the Olympic Peninsula and surrounding communities. Melodic Mastery As part of his 2014-15 touring season, Dmitri presents jazz improvisation workshops for aspiring musicians. Based on the teachings of his mentor, jazz legend Art Farmer (photo), Matheny advocates a lyrical, melodic approach to jazz.
