A reminder to agencies who shop at MANNA on Mondays
MANNA will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, 2014. Agencies who normally shop at MANNA on Mondays may place a double order for pick-up the week before (May 19, 2014) or they may contact Glenda Gragg at 299-3663, ext. 227 to reset their appointments for later in the week based on available shopping times. Shopping times are limited that week so it is first come, first served. If available shopping times do run out the next option will be to place a double order for pick-up. Thank you for your understanding!

FREE Produce, bread, and perishables can be picked up Monday through Friday from 1-3pm at no additional cost even if your agency has already shopped for the week!  Call Erica at MANNA  (828) 299-3663 x236 to ask what produce is available before you plan to visit MANNA.
*****
Does your agency plan on hosting a fundraiser in the future? Please consider our Feeding America Agreement: MANNA food cannot be used for fundraising or meals that are sold to raise money for an organization's budget. Thank you for your help!

A two day ServSafe FOOD PROTECTION MANAGER CERTIFICATION course will be offered at the Haywood County Cooperative Extension Office on Wednesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 28, 2014.  North Carolina’s Food Code requires the presence of a “Person-in-charge” with food safety certification that can demonstrate food safety knowledge and active managerial control.  ServSafe certification will help establishments meet this requirement. For more information call 828-456-3575 and ask for Julie Sawyer.
*Questions from Our Agencies*
Did you receive a call regarding your Food Safety account at MANNA? If you have a servsafe certificate on hand please call (828)250-3663 x250 to update your agency record.

How can I send my certificate to MANNA after I’m done with my training?

Once you complete the exam portion of the test a certificate will show up on your screen for your records. Since ServSafe can charge $20 for a duplicate certificate we recommend printing multiple copies of the certificate for your records or that you save a copy of the certificate to your computer.

Email your certificate to kgerman@mannafoodbank.org
or send a fax including your agency # to (828)299-7959

MANNA Building Redesign Update
We were pleased that many of you were able to attend the recent open house to see the design plans for the MANNA renovation project.   We have a slight delay in breaking ground. The general contractor submitted the plans to the city to request a construction permit to get underway.  Normally that only takes a few days.  Unfortunately, the city permit office is short on staff and we were informed that the back-up is potentially as long as 30 to 45 days.

We want to assure everyone that the delay is not due to a problem with the project---it’s just the timing of the permit.

Thanks for your patience---it will be well worth the wait!

MANNA In the News
Stamp out Hunger 2014

Saturday May 10th marks the 22nd anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving – the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Letter carriers walk through the community every day, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many – hunger.
So, each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to the local food pantries to provide food to people in Western North Carolina who need our help. Last year our area collected over 300,000lbs!

15th Annual Blue Jean Ball

MANNA FoodBank is busy planning the 15th Annual Blue Jean Ball, to be held on the campus of MANNA on Swannanoa River Road on Saturday, June 7th. The theme of the ball this year is “Bling it On!”  As with every BJB, 25 of Asheville’s favorite restaurants will be serving small grazing plates as well as a wide selection of beer and wines.  Live music, dancing, and a not-so-silent auction complete the night.  In 2013, Mountain Xpress readers voted the Blue Jean Ball the best fundraising event…and this year promises to deliver even more!
In the Community
On the day before Thanksgiving, the Y opened its Healthy Living Pantry and distributed food to families in need. The goal of the pantry is to give these community families the resources they need at no cost. Working with MANNA Food Bank, this program went from dream to reality in under a month and has a brought in over 4,500 pounds of food while serving over 65 adults and children. As the pantry grows there will be opportunities for families to participate in hands-on nutrition education through a partnership with Inter Faith Food Shuttle and Share Our Strengths Cooking Matters programs, as well as enroll in SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. - See more at: http://www.ymcawnc.org/newsroom/corporate/healthy-living-pantry-opens#sthash.nqP8yX2F.dpuf
