Stony Creek Put-In 2014 - - Heidi Dzendzel

Welcome back to ASI this season. Our east side adventure begins:

Saturday, May 3, five drivers, already assigned, will transport four Interlakes and one Utility trailer to Stony Creek starting at 12:00 noon from the Crawford Farm.

Sunday, May 4, at 1:00 pm, we will have the mast raising. Everyone is invited to participate or just hang out and get re-acquainted again.

Look at www.metroparks.com/STONYCREEK for directions. Please park in the main parking lot and walk to Storage Lot #53 where the fun begins.
May 3 is Interlake splash day! - - Mike and Judy Nolta

You don’t want to see one of your L1 Launch Coordinators like this, do you???

Then please come out to Level 1 boat launch this Saturday, May 3rd, starting at Crawford Farm at 0900 (0830 for Station Leaders). We have enough haulers – thanks everyone! – in fact, we may request some of you to provide assistance elsewhere.

But we still need Station Leaders – specifically, we need someone in charge of the sail house and providing coffee.  Speaking of coffee, does anyone have one of those industrial size coffee brewers that makes several gallons?  If so, or you are interested in being a Station Leader, please let us know at mjnolta@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks again for your participation.  Hopefully, the good weekend weather we’ve been having will continue May 3rd!

Level 1 Launch Coordinators, Mike & Judy Nolta
Tuesday morning sails - - Warren Puggini
Tuesday morning sails at Kent Lake will start on May 6 at 10:30 a.m. We have a great group of sailors who are there to give practice sails, help any club member get on the water and just have FUN.

So come on out! Paula Merideth and Warren Puggini will be coordinating the Tuesday sails. After sailing some people bring their lunch and socialize. Fair winds and Blue skies.
Racing in the Spring - - Michael Golden

New L1 grads from last season and any rated member, can still qualify for 2014 racing by attending a repeat of the Race SeminarSunday May 4 at 1pm at Kent Lake. Novices race with each other; they don't have to keep up with the advanced racers.

ASI Partners With Livonia Community Recreation Center - - Bob Frank
ASI goes to Livonia with the "Joy of Sailing" program. A Level 1 program will start with the first classroom session Tuesday June 3, 2014 at the Livonia Community Recreation Center [LCRC], 15100 Hubbard, on Five Mile Road between Merriman Rd. and Farmington Rd.

The program's format is the same as the community college format. There will be three (2) hour classroom sessions all held at the LCRC on Tuesdays. On Thursday June 5, 2014 there will be an Introduction/rigging class at Kent Lake followed by five on-water evenings concluding Tuesday July 1, 2014. All students will be offered to purchase a sail pass which will provide them the opportunity to continue sailing to achieve their Level 1 rating.

ASI will be sailing, sort of speaking, in uncharted waters since this will be the first time we will partner with an organization other than a community college. However LCRC has over 12,000 adult members. Their catalog has an abundance of active programs which would suggest our 'Joy of Sailing' program would be very appealing. The LCRC program will compliment our ASI classes since all sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Of course, the ASI/LCRC program is open to all adults not just Livonia residents.

Registration begins Monday April 7 for LCRC members, Tuesday April 8 for Livonia residents and Thursday April 10 for all others. Registration deadline is 5pm Friday May 30, 2014. Click here for the flyer.
Keelboat scheduling - - Jon Buyle
Keelboat scheduling begins May 1 for those who want to reserve boats for the 2014 season.  Remember, boats will not be available for timeshares until cleared by the boat captains.  Please inform me of any priority events, such as maintenance, instruction, evening sails, or special events so that I can get them in the scheduling calendar, secure your event, and prevent timeshares from being cancelled.

Here are a few reminders for keelboat captains in order to make the process work best for all of us:

1-Please limit your calls to 9AM-9PM, unless it’s an emergency.  Feel free to email me anytime.

2-Use the ASI website to check on availability of keelboats before calling.  It is updated daily.  You can also click on an entry in the calendar to obtain more details, such as the timeshare hours and the designated captain of a timeshare.  That information can be useful for several reasons, such as checking with the previous captain on any problems he experienced with the boat, arranging a transition with the next captain, or notifying the next captain if you are going to be late.

3-When leaving voicemail requests, please speak slowly and clearly, especially when leaving numbers.  I often have to listen to a message several times to get all the information.

4-Be sure to notify the Boat Captain and Keelboat Scheduler if a boat needs immediate attention that could affect safety & future timeshares.

5-Remember that reservations are made on a first-come, first-serve basis and are not held or confirmed for you until secured with a credit card.

6-Make your reservations as far in advance as you can.  I will do my best to respond to last-minute requests, but cannot guarantee a response in less than 24 hours.  (I have a life too!)

7-Finally, Do NOT take a boat without clearing it with the Scheduler first, even though a boat appears to be available or your boat becomes disabled.  There have been situations where a member who has reserved and paid for a timeshare arrives later and finds the boat gone.  It may also be a safety risk for you and your passengers, as the boat may have been taken out of service or have special instructions that the Boat Captain has asked me to convey.

A special welcome to all the new Level 2 Captains.  Have a great summer and great sailing season!  Hope to see all of you out on the lake.

Spring has sprung! Time to splash the Interlakes this Saturday!

Last Saturday the weather cooperated, and with the great turnout we got lots done. Here's a shot of the dockboxes being installed at the East Boat Launch.

We've got water, gear, and crew--- all we need now are boats! Here's what remains to be done before splashing the interlakes on May 3!

All hands on deck!Work should be greatly eased due to the work done last fall in shrink-wrapping the boats.   We'll need lots of hands on deck for the Interlake launch, so be sure to update your calendar. Spring's coming!
Sign up now for the 2014 Advanced Level 1 sailing class!
There are still a few spots open. the status, as of 3/29 is:
  • May 25 - class full
  • June 15 - 1 spot open
  • July 5 - 2 spots open
  • September 14 - 1 spot open
  • September 28 - class full
-------------------
ASI’s advanced Level-1 sailing class completed another successful season in 2013, with a full roster of 10 students and some very positive student feedback on the curriculum, which continues to improve. The 2014 advanced L1 sailing class is now open for prospective students to reserve a spot.

The purpose of the class is to build on basic ASI L1 instruction to take students to the next level of sailing skill and confidence. Content includes reinforcement of key concepts taught in basic L1, instruction on more advanced techniques and controls (including flying a spinnaker), and sharing of practical tips in a wide variety of sailing topics. This class does not cover racing rules, techniques, or tactics. Some potential students include capable rated L1 sailors, new L1 instructors, L1 racing students, future L2 students, and even L2 or above sailors who would like to refresh or strengthen their basic understanding of sailing concepts. You must have paid your 2014 dues, be up to date on volunteer hours, and be rated to take the class. Unless you have significant sailing experience prior to joining ASI, I recommend taking this class only after you have completed at least one full season as a rated L1 sailor.

The class will be taught at Kent Lake 5 times this year, with 2 students per class date. Class time is spent roughly half at the dock and half on the water over a 7-8 hour period. The cost is $35 paid in advance to the Sail Secretary.

Class dates are: Sunday, May 25th, Sunday, June 15th, Saturday, July 5th, Sunday, September 14th or Sunday, September 28th.

If you are interested in taking the class, please send an email to:
Steve Poulos at stepoulos@yahoo.com with a copy to our sail secretary,
Lisa Drumm, at secretary@sailasi.org.

Include the following information:
• Full name and current rating
• Confirm you have paid your 2014 dues and volunteer hours are up to date
• Years since you were rated L1, as of January 1st, 2014
• List of all class dates that will work for you, in order or preference (first, most preferred)

Responses will be prioritized by the order in which I receive your email request for each open class date. Based on the responses I get, I will fill out and publish an initial student roster in the Burgee before the end of April and will contact selected students so that they may confirm their position and pay the fee to the sail secretary, holding their spot. Please do not pay until I have confirmed your spot via email. There are no refunds and you must pay the fee within 7 calendar days of being confirmed by me that you are on the student list or your spot will be released to the next interested student.

Several potential students who could not find spots last year have already expressed interest in this year’s class informally, so I would encourage you to respond soon via email before these few class dates fill up.

Thanks, Steve Poulos, Adv. L1 Instructor

Mentor Director

I filled this position when it was called Assistant Level 1 Manager. My interest was in filling the gap some students felt after class and before passing L1. I see my role as all club all lake mentor. Ive taught in L1 class to sailing on the L3/4 boats in the North Channel. And while I cant answer all questions I know who to direct new students (and members) to. For example Heidi Dzendzel and her wonderful team for all things Stony. I also help to co-ordinate our Practice Sail Organizers just to keep things even. This year Joan Swain has joined the team to focus on welcoming all students at all lakes and following up on their progress and experience. We see this as a very positive way to continually improve our club and student experiences.  I appreciate her involvement and personal touch. I hope you check out the "Student" tab on the web site (www.sailASI.org) and even start learning knots. Theres a lot of good information and student documents there.

If you as a student need any club info or advise on your sailing journey just ask any one of us.
We will be glad to answer questions, clarify your concerns and assist in guiding you to your next steps with the club.
On a related matter if you plan to give practice sails this season please pencil in Wed May 7th at 6:30 to attend JoAnne's instructors/mentors seminar. We strongly believe we all should be giving the same information to students and this is the perfect way to update and touch up your knowledge and the ASI way. See you at Wayne State U./Oakland Center, Farmington Hills .

Web Access

As a member of ASI you should have received an email from me Sunday with a new code to access the protected pages on our new web site. If you are a member of the club this code will give you access to all protected pages. You no longer have to "sign in" 1st as before. If a page is protected it will indicate that upon entering and you can enter the code you received . Be aware that from time to time the code may change. This will most likely be each season and a notice will go out to all members. If you did not receive this email PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM before contacting me.

Help the world find ASI

Ok well maybe just help more students in this area find our web site.
We are looking for a few members to help with some clerical work on the web site.
This will be entering words or phases that allow Google and other search engines find our club.
You just need basic simple computer skills, and a little spelling knowledge :)
This is for volunteer hours and may be 5-10 hours of work in total.

Photo Directory

Ever wondered whos who at the club ? Or youve always heard about this great sailor but didnt know what he or she looked liked. Well theyve done studies and found a simple "Hello I'm...that great sailor" is a good way to promote the club, welcome new students and gain new friends. To help with this we are starting a member photo directory. If you would like your picture available to other club members Please make sure to have your picture taken at one of our events or send in a short bio and head shot. This is private to members only. Take a minute this season and introduce yourself to a new member, thank you.

Sailing Turquoise Waters? Maybe next winter?

A Caribbean sailing week is being considered for late January/early February 2015. This is not an ASI sponsored trip, but an attempt to organize a week for anyone who might be interested.

We are considering USVI and/or BVI.  Do you have a preference?  Are you interested in being a captain or crew?  We normally do the last week in January to get good weather and keep costs down (pre-prime time).

Are you interested?  E-mail and let us know: bviusvi2015@gmail.com

A few more things - - Don Caley

Who writes the Burgee? YOU DO! Mike and I are only editors, copy-and-pasters, and spiritual advisors. We depend on you sailors - old salts and newbies - to send in content. What kind of content? Just about anything you'd like your fellow members to know about. Of course, it would be nice if it related to sailing and boating! When in doubt, send it in for consideration!

Please send your Burgee input to asidon@comcast.net for inclusion in an upcoming Burgee. Sail hearty and often, and don't let your jib luff!
