Possible L4 Boat Replacement – your recommendation

What's wrong with this picture? -  - Heidi Dzendzel
10 AM Weekday Keelboat Sailors - - Vic Macks
This is a list of level 2, 3, and 4 rated members sailing weekdays at 10 am.

Since 2008, we look ahead 1 to 3 or 4 days, pick the fair-weather day, go where the wind is, have lunch underway, and return to the dock in time to accommodate westsiders who wish to avoid the peak afternoon rush hour traffic or the sailor heading to the work place.

Sails are initiated by anyone on the list. Maximum aboard is 5. Time share fee is split between those aboard. Send me an email (vicmacks3@gmail.com) with the following:
  • name and indicate level 2, 3, or 4
  • email address and phone number (s)
  • week day mornings likely available
I will email an updated list as often as there are changes or additions.

Picnic - Picnic -Picnic - Picnic   - - Marilyn Alimpich
It’s not too early to start planning. A Picnic Coordinator(s) for our all-ASI picnic is urgently needed. The scheduled date is Saturday, August 2, 2014 (rain date, Sunday August 3rd). Volunteer hours are readily available for planning and implementing this fun event which also features the Kent Cup races.

If your talents include having fun while eating and greeting...Please contact Marilyn Alimpich for information or to volunteer at masoleil@sbcglobal.net or 734-453-4845.
The Open House needs your help! - - John Tiley
This years Open House is July 12th. Just around the corner.
This is an ALL CLUB events and all levels should step up and help out.
This includes Students and Racers!

Please let your Level Manager know your interested or that you will be taking part or email me.
Open house is right after the Milford Parade. We need people for that event too.

We pass out flyers at the Milford parade about Open House and we need  volunteers to do that. Also Its not too soon to ask your friends and co-workers that might like to take lessons to pencil in the date. While all are invited, remember we are looking for people seriously looking to take sailing  lessons.

We are also doing an Information board at Open House again this year to show case all levels and our club.
If your level has pictures or ideas or want to help put this together please let me know. This is a good way to show both the public and the lower levels what you have to offer and do a little intra club recruiting. Each level should have a member ready to talk about their level.

Both the parade and Open House are fun easy ways to build your club and get volunteer hours. I look forward to hearing from you.

Stony Creek Class Activities - - Heidi Dzendzel
Everyone must agree that Mother Nature out-did herself delivering perfect sailing winds and weather these past few weeks. We teach land-based rigging and trailer hitching in a storage lot located near the boat launch. The low 4 knot winds made it easy to raise and test the sails in the morning; all the while increasing up to 8 knots for the rest of the day. The classic off-shore winds made a superb setting for the launch and return back to the dock.

Seven new members recently completed their spring class and had a 'soakingly' good time on the water. Our instructors and students coasted onto Eastwood Beach's sandy shore for lunch. The anchored boats looked beautiful in the background overlooking the lake; while we sat on the lawn and shared sailing stories of old.

Help needed for the club picnic! - - John Tiley
This picnic is a required club meeting. We hold it as a picnic  on the same day as the Kent Cup races just cause its fun.

Now we can make the picnic anything we want.
I suggested we each bring a PB and J to eat. Someone didn't like that idea. Others though make it a pot luck. Which seems to be winning favor. Now in the past this was a big social event for the club, great fun with the race and a picnic and they did a nice BBQ with all the fixings.

However it seems things change, as all things do and getting the interest to help put this on (and other events) doesn't seem to be there for some reason. Too often the same group of people do most of the work year after year. This needs to change. And while we are a great club and have lots of fun and have great volunteers....we need more members to step up and do a little to help out.

If you're willing to do a simple task to put on the picnic(or any event) please let us know when we ask !

Now so far we are going to have brown bag PB & J unless we hear otherwise from you.
It takes about 6-7 willing members to put on a BBQ, about  4-5 for just pizza and at least 3-4 for a pot luck.

So let me know what we want to do.

Please Email me ASAP that you are willing and available to lend a hand...to crew up....at these events. While most of the organization is done (from last year) we still need a hand with key station leaders to organize this years. If thats you (and a few friends) please let me know !

Cruise with the Power Squadron on the Bristol Bay -  - Paula Merideth
On June 25, 2014 the the US Power Squadron, the US Coast Guard and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be sponsoring their annual cruise on the Bristol Bay, the Coast Guard's Bay-class ice-breaking tug and barge. This is an educational cruise designed to familiarize all boaters with the aids to navigation we find in our local waters, and it's really helpful to see the nav aids as we cruise from the from the Ambassador Bridge up into Lake St. Clair, first in daylight and then after dark. The Coast Guard is very welcoming and allows everyone to tour the vessel including the bridge, which is quite an experience. And, best of all, it's great to cruise up and down the river on a warm summer night!

All are welcome on the cruise, whether members of the USPS or CGA or not. The cruise is a lot of fun but is also a great experience. Keelboat sailors, especially our newer L2s or L2 students will see the various nav aids up close, including the Peche Island Range where Lake St. Clair empties into the Detroit River. And Interlake sailors would find cruising on the bigger water enjoyable and might get the urge to sail the keelboats too.

Here's a link to the brochure:

If you have any questions, please call Linda Lalonde (her number is on the brochure) or feel free to contact me at paulamer@sbcglobal.net.   Hope to see you there!

Sail Lake St Clair with Dave Pardy!
Interested in sailing on the ASI keel boats on Lake St. Clair? I try to match up rated and unrated members and their guests who want to go out.

The concentration is on Thursday and Friday mornings and Thursday evenings but I might expand that depending on interest.

Email me (dspardy@pardysell.com) and I can send you more details and add you to the email list.
LAST YEAR we had (about) 34 sails on 28 days, benefiting 66 unique members, with 177 total person/sails. many thanks to Mike Nolta for pulling together the statistics.
How will you be driving this summer? - - Dave Amsdill
So what will it be for the summer road trip this year......Yellowstone, Disney, Rock City? How about a little Sunday Drive the ASI way. No triptiks, no need to tune up the family wagon, no boring road games, no singing 99 bottles of beer. Just wind at your back and spray in your face.

Please join us on Sunday afternoons at the east boat launch at Kent Lake and leave your motel reservations behind to enjoy some sailing. If you are a student or unrated we'll do our best to hook you up for a practice sail. Please let MaryAnn know you're coming (maryannherek@gmail.com) so that we may encourage sailing mentors to be available. Arrive between noon and 1PM. Feel free to bring refreshments if you like. See you there.

Sailing Turquoise Waters? January-February 2015: Urgent Request

A Caribbean sailing week is being considered for late January/early February 2015. This is not an ASI sponsored trip, but an attempt to organize a week for anyone who might be interested.

We are sailing 1/24-1/31 or 1/31-2/7. We have seven (7) boats with captains and six (6) are full. At the present time we are signing up for monohulls (3 or 4) or catamarans (3 or 4). There are many on our list who have indicated an interest as crew but have no boat.

Would you consider being captain? Having Keelboat experience is important and we have many ASI sailors who are qualified. There is a deadline for a charter discount of 1 day if signed up by May 26. Back in the ‘good old days’ we had 11 boats from ASI charter in the BVI and we met at Sidneys on Jost Van Dyke for a great time. There are so many beautiful places to visit and enjoy as well as great sailing experiences each day. The camaradie is memorable. Mooring balls make it easier to spend the night at an inexpensive rate of $25. Consider joining us as a captain. Contact Dan or Trudy for questions or further information.

Keelboat scheduling - - Jon Buyle
Keelboat scheduling has begun for those who want to reserve boats for the 2014 season.  Remember, boats will not be available for timeshares until cleared by the boat captains.  Please inform me of any priority events, such as maintenance, instruction, evening sails, or special events so that I can get them in the scheduling calendar, secure your event, and prevent timeshares from being cancelled.

Here are a few reminders for keelboat captains in order to make the process work best for all of us:

1-Please limit your calls to 9AM-9PM, unless it’s an emergency.  Feel free to email me anytime.

2-Use the ASI website to check on availability of keelboats before calling.  It is updated daily.  You can also click on an entry in the calendar to obtain more details, such as the timeshare hours and the designated captain of a timeshare.  That information can be useful for several reasons, such as checking with the previous captain on any problems he experienced with the boat, arranging a transition with the next captain, or notifying the next captain if you are going to be late.

3-When leaving voicemail requests, please speak slowly and clearly, especially when leaving numbers.  I often have to listen to a message several times to get all the information.

4-Be sure to notify the Boat Captain and Keelboat Scheduler if a boat needs immediate attention that could affect safety & future timeshares.

5-Remember that reservations are made on a first-come, first-serve basis and are not held or confirmed for you until secured with a credit card.

6-Make your reservations as far in advance as you can.  I will do my best to respond to last-minute requests, but cannot guarantee a response in less than 24 hours.  (I have a life too!)

7-Finally, Do NOT take a boat without clearing it with the Scheduler first, even though a boat appears to be available or your boat becomes disabled.  There have been situations where a member who has reserved and paid for a timeshare arrives later and finds the boat gone.  It may also be a safety risk for you and your passengers, as the boat may have been taken out of service or have special instructions that the Boat Captain has asked me to convey.

A special welcome to all the new Level 2 Captains.  Have a great summer and great sailing season!  Hope to see all of you out on the lake.
