Meet "Kaya" Sticco Our September 2014 Pet of the Month.

Hi, my name is “Kaya”, and I am Largo Veterinary Hospital’s September 2014 pet of the month. My mom thinks I am special because she says I am as loyal as a dog but as independent as any cat can be. Shhh…don’t tell Dr. Lutz or Dr. Daniels, but my favorite treat is Peeps. Something funny that happened to me was the time I got my head stuck in a plastic cup. My mom loves me so much that she has helped me lose nearly 6 pounds! A fun fact about me is that I scream when I hear Joni Mitchell. I am so spoiled that I even get to sleep with my mom.

Keep informed and have fun following us too!
Did you know...
Cats are one of the most popular pets, as evidenced by the many YouTube videos.

If you do not have a cat, maybe it’s time to consider adopting one from a local shelter!
Then bring her in to meet us! Check out these YouTube videos just for your cat to watch.

3 Reasons Not to Order Pet Meds Online
1. Fake pharmacies, fake medications: This could mean life or death for your beloved pet. Fake pills include “sugar pills, diluted versions of the medication, medication with additives that may be bad for your pet, and more. Of the 420 online pet pharmacies reviewed on SiteJabber more than one in three were identified as non-legitimate pharmacies, meaning that they likely violated laws or regulations around the sale of drugs.

2. Revolving charges for recurring shipments that you never authorized.

3. Shipments that never arrive or are greatly delayed. If your pet is waiting for needed medication that his health depends on, you may not want to take this risk.

What can do to protect your pet’s health? Buy medications only from your veterinarian and if price is an issue ask about payment plans.
5 Risk Factors for Heatstroke
What Makes Some Dogs Most Vulnerable
  1. Being kept outdoors without access to shade and water.
  2. Obesity can certainly put your pet in harm's way when it comes to heat stress. It makes dogs more susceptible to many issues — like joint and back problems — and heatstroke is no exception. A large layer of fat under the skin serves as insulation and can prevent heat from getting to the skin to be released.
  3. Being left in the car. It is never OK to leave a pet in a hot car. If you see an animal in a hot car write down the car's make, model and license plate; attempt to locate the owner; and call animal control or your local police department for help.
  4. Not being used to hot weather. Resist going for a run with your dog on the first hot day of the year. Dogs will not stop, even when they can't breathe or are about to collapse.
  5. Thick fur can also trap heat in your pet's body, so you should also watch closely for signs of heatstroke if you own a furry breed and consider keeping your pet's coat trimmed short in the hottest months.
It's up to you, then, to know the signs of heat stress, so you can help your dog cool down before it becomes an emergency.
