Blues Festival Guide

Vol 9/Issue 40
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your E-Editor...
Planning, empowering, preventing, exploring...
According to some sources, the first week of October is "Get Organized Week"... that would be "GO" for short. Often times, when I'm faced with piles of papers that have been stashed away for one reason or another, the word "run" comes to mind! But, yes, getting organized is a good thing for most of us. It helps us release ourselves of clutter or find that elusive lost treasure and also helps us make plans, whether for tomorrow or for a festival adventure next year.

Billy Branch celebrates a birthday this Friday, October 3. Billy was one of the very first artists to develop a Blues In The School program 36 years ago. Our kudos go out to him for formulating a creative, empowering blues music curriculum for not only school kids but also adults.

The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Remembering those we've lost and stepping up to help find a cure. We lost the wonderful Ann Rabson the beginning of last year to breast cancer. We're featuring one of Ann's live videos this week. Ladies, please get checked regularly.

Our good friend and BFG sales manager Cheryl O'Grady Yearnshaw and her husband Tom have headed out on the road from Nevada to catch some blues festivals, events and exhibitions across the country and meet up with as many fine blues-type folks as possible. They are not only knowledgeable blues fanatics but they are both a crackup, too! We look forward to hearing about their travel updates and antics soon.

Upcoming Birthdays of note: Oct 3 Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954), Billy Branch (1951), Keb' Mo' (1951), Deborah Coleman (1956); Oct 4 Duke Robillard (1948), Betsie Brown (Blind Raccoon); Oct 5 Roy Book Binder (1943), Rick Estrin (1949); Oct 6 Cheryl O'Grady Yearnshaw (great friend and BFG Sales Director), Diunna Greenleaf (1957); Oct 8 Andy “T” Talamantez; Oct 9 O.V. Wright (1939), Oct 10 "Mississippi" Joe Callicott (1900), Cyril Neville (1948)

Markey Blue :: HEY HEY
Hey Hey, it's Markey Blue! Coming out of the gate at #1 on the Blues Debut Chart, Markey Blue's Hey Hey is also riding high on the Roots Music Album and Singles charts. Original songs and fresh grooves, with some help from Grammy-winning Stax legend Steve Cropper and former Allman Brother Jack Pearson, have gained co-leaders Markey and Ric Latina international recognition.

Barely a year after meeting, they’re taking the Roots/Soul/Blues scene by storm. Their song “Baby I'm Cryin'” will soon debut in an independent movie, and DownBeat magazine will review the CD in its December issue.

Long John Baldry :: THE BEST OF THE STONY PLAIN YEARS
Long John Baldry, The Best of the Stony Plain Years, includes tracks from the Stony Plains Record vaults, as well as rare and previously-unreleased material. British blues pioneer Long John Baldry (1941-2005) recorded for Stony Plain from 1991 up until his death. He started performing acoustic blues in London in the late 1950s and worked with fellow leaders of the British blues vanguard Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies in the early ‘60s.

Baldry was an inspiration to The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. He mentored Rod Stewart and Elton John, who both produced and recorded on some of Baldry’s early classic albums, Everything Stops for Tea and It Ain’t Easy.
