Restorative Yoga with Carol More

March 5 - April 23, 2015
Thursdays, 5:30 - 7 pm

Join our new instructor, Carol More, for a gentle, yet effective, practice that counteracts the daily assault of our instinctive “fight or flight” response, allowing us to feel truly relaxed and refreshed--body, mind, and spirit. Restorative yoga complements all forms of activity, including other yoga classes. Under Carol's experienced guidance, you will enjoy 90-minutes of carefully sequenced poses, supported by blankets and bolsters. Each pose is held for at least 10 minutes so you can release deeply. Classes also include relaxation breathing techniques and guided meditation. You will leave class with a peaceful, sustainable energy. All levels are welcome.

Come learn how restorative yoga:
  • Balances the nervous system
  • Calms the mind
  • Relaxes large muscles, relieving pain and discomfort
  • Aids in the body’s natural healing response by reducing inflammation
  • Can decrease the production of cortisol in the body, which is linked to weight gain
  • Relieves insomnia
We are offering the class for 8 consecutive weeks. If interest is strong, the class will become a regular feature of our studio, so come on out and give it a try!

More in Mexico

While vacationing in Mexico last month, one morning I walked for 45 minutes on the malecón (the brick walkway on the east side of the island), watched the sun come up, visited with my friend Wayne, bought yogurt at Super Xpress, and wrote in my journal—all by 8 am. A lot can happen when you get out of bed early!

Afterwards, I gave thought to how much “more” I feel I have when I’m visiting Isla Mujeres. Here’s a short list: more sunrises, more sleep, more time, more sunshine, more walks, more margaritas, more reading, more avocados, and more…well, more time with my husband.

Of course I know there’s no more available time on the Yucatan Peninsula than anywhere else: 24 hours in a day--that’s what we all have. So what is “more time” all about? Seriously, many people come to Asheville on vacation. Do they have more time here than at home? Do they feel like they do?

When I returned home to Asheville, I decided to explore this notion. I began to notice that my body feels different when I have to be somewhere at a particular time. I observed that my skin gets tight and my breath becomes shallow when I prepare for an appointment, even when I chose to make at that appointment. In Mexico, when we agreed to have dinner with our friends, Shelly and Steve, our plan was to meet at their apartment “after sunset.” That felt so spacious! No pressure. Perhaps that’s the key! No pressure! OK, since I’m in charge of my schedule, where’s the pressure coming from?

I suspect it’s self-induced and comes from old, old habits—perhaps from being rushed out of the house with my three sisters to go to school. I imagine that my parents had their own pressures with getting us fed, clothed, and out the door at a certain time. And I probably took on some anticipatory anxiety when they hurried me—the oldest—to hurry those pesky little sisters. I don’t know. I do know that I now have the ability to change the habit of how I feel physically and emotionally.

I can use the same understanding and same breath as I use when I find difficulty in a yoga pose. I stop. I relax the tight places. I breathe. I remain present to the moment I’m in without anticipating the next move. In due time, I’ll move. Not now. Now I stay put and bring the mind back to the body and the breath.

Staying present and paying attention requires practice and dedication to the practice. I have to want to change the habits—whether they’re mental, emotional, or physical. If I want “more” I must pay “more” attention to my life and bring my awareness into the habits that cause me to miss my life. How do I want to spend my time in this very precious life? Do I want to BE or to be pressured?

I choose to Be. So I’ll breathe, pay attention, and practice that.

Book Club
On Sunday, April 5, from 5:45 to 7:15 pm, we will continue to discuss The Places That Scare You, A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times by Pema Chodron.

Our focus will be on the Buddhist practice of tonglen, the Tibetan word for "sending and taking,." In this simple practice, we learn to take in the pain and suffering of ourselves and others and to send out happiness to all. In this way, we learn to be present, witness our challenges and fears, and transform that energy into loving kindness and compassion for ourselves and others.

Copies of the book are available for purchase at One Center. Start reading today, and join us for a rewarding evening of self-study and community.

Breathe Easy!
Side Bending Poses
with Kim Drye, HereNowYoga

Saturday, April 11, 11am - 1pm

Side bends help stretch and tone the muscles
along the outer sides of the abdomen and rib
cage, helping to keep the spine supple. Side bends also create interior space for the abdominal organs, expand the diaphragm, and lift the collarbones and sternum. As a result, the breath deepens, allowing prana to flow. All levels are welcome.

Join visiting and popular teacher Kim Drye to practice poses like parighasana, (gate-latch pose), one of several valuable side bends that:

Balance the sides of the body
Mobilize the spine
Bring freedom into the chest and neck

Cost for 2-hour classes: $30 with prepaid registration, $35 day of class
