Balkun Brothers :: REDROVA
ReDrova is Balkun Brothers’ first full-length, self-produced album that includes an impressive variety of musical styles that sends the listener on a journey from the roots of American blues to the future of rock n’ roll and beyond. Drawing inspiration from the traditional sounds of delta and electric blues, then fusing it with heavy guitar riffs and funky in-the-pocket rhythms, the album aims to push the known boundaries of the blues. This set of songs speaks volumes about the band’s growth sonically, lyrically and musically, showcasing a vast amount of new age, energetic melodies that are strategically intertwined within varying dynamic ranges throughout the entire album to capture the listener at every twist and turn. Find more details about this release

Mississippi Fever :: 300 MILES TO MEMPHIS
Nothing challenges blues musicians like playing in a guitar, bass and drums trio. Fierce commitment, top chops and exceptional songs are required to keep the format fresh and enticing to an audience. Mississippi Fever from St. Louis proved their bona fides on their self-titled debut in 2010.

Extraordinary singer/guitarist Brent Barker, virtuoso bassist Ted May and head snapping drummer Tom May have now taken their simmering power and pugnacity up a notch with their latest release, 300 Miles To Memphis. Eight originals of love and lust plus two choice covers are augmented by Steve Grimes and Rick Steff (keyboards), and Brandon Santini (harmonica).

Talented young musicians’ fill Safeway Blues Fest 4th of July Weekend
PORTLAND, OR (KOIN) — When BB King died May 14, the blues lost one of its greatest ambassadors. His passing is a stark reminder the traditional blues superstars are fading away.

But Peter Dammann, the artistic director for the 2015 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, said there is a new breed of blues performers, many of them mentored by the greats.

“Buddy Guy is, in many ways, the last one (of the traditional bluesmen) and he’s playing this year,” Dammann told KOIN 6 News. “(There are) extremely talented young musicians and performers coming up, and we’re showcasing a lot of them this year.”

Among those up-and-comers: Quinn Sullivan (who will play with Buddy Guy), Kingfish Ingram, Ty Curtis and Ben Rice. The festival also pushes the blues envelope with zydeco and rhythm-and-blues acts.

Claud Johnson, Son of Blues Legend Robert Johnson, Dies
NY TIMES - Claud Johnson, who became rich by winning a much-publicized court fight over the estate of his long-dead and belatedly celebrated father, the Mississippi blues artist Robert Johnson, died on Tuesday. He was 83.

His death was confirmed by John Kitchens, who represented Mr. Johnson in the case. He said he did not know whether Mr. Johnson, who had diabetes and other health problems, died in a hospital or at his home in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.

The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled in early 2014 that Claud Johnson could keep the profits from the only two known photographs of his father, who is widely credited as a forefather of rock ’n’ roll and whose compositions include “Me and the Devil Blues” and “Cross Road Blues.”

Forgotten Heroes: Pops Staples
PREMIER GUITAR - Whenever you hear country blues-inflected guitar played through an amp with tremolo, you’re hearing a sound descended from singer/composer/guitarist Pops Staples. Best known as the leader of a family gospel group, the Staple Singers, his guitar style influenced and inspired John Fogerty, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, and countless others. The dark mystery of his instrument’s wavy sound has become part of the fabric of American music. Roebuck Staples, known as “Pops,” was born to Warren and Florence Staples on December 28, 1914, on a cotton plantation near Winona, Mississippi. Roebuck and his older brother Sears were named after the Chicago mail-order company that supplied millions of rural Americans with everything from washing machines to musical instruments.
