Current Research on Eating Disorders:

Perceptual body image of patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and their fathers. Researchers: Benninghoven D, Tetsch N, Kunzendorf S, Jantschek G. Campus Luebeck, Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine, University of Schleswig- Holstein. PURPOSE: Little is known about how fathers of patients with eating disorders perceive their own body. In this study we investigated body image perception of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa and body image perception of their fathers in a computer assisted approach. METHODS: A computer program, the somatomorphic matrix, is presented that allows modeling of perceived and desired body-images of patients and their relatives. Patients and fathers rated their own body images and fathers additionally rated the body images of their daughters. The images implemented in the program correspond with defined percentages of body fat and muscularity. Selected images were compared with subjects' anthropometric data regarding body fat and muscularity. Data from 42 father-daughter-dyads (27 patients with anorexia, 15 with bulimia nervosa) were examined. Differences between both diagnostic groups were compared and associations between fathers' and daughters' body image perceptions within each group were investigated. RESULTS: Patients with anorexia nervosa overestimated their bodies on the body fat dimension. Patients with bulimia nervosa wished to have a body with less fat. Fathers of both groups of patients perceived their own bodies correctly but wished to have less body fat and to be more muscular. The wish for a change in body fat of anorexia nervosa patients was highly correlated with fathers' BMI (r=0.49; p=0.009). The wish for a change in body fat of bulimia nervosa patients was correlated with fathers' distorted body image perception in terms of muscularity (r=-0.66, p=0.007) and with fathers' wish for a more muscular body (r=-0.51, p=0.05). CONCLUSION: Body images of patients with eating disorders and their fathers are related in the group of patients with bulimia nervosa. Perhaps, body images of fathers should be addressed in family therapy with patients with bulimia nervosa. Source: Eat Weight Disord. 2007 Mar;12(1):12-9.

Eating disorders in diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations. Researchers: Feldman MB, Meyer IH. Medical and Health Research Association of New York City, Inc. OBJECTIVE: This study estimates the prevalence of eating disorders in lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women, and examines the association between participation in the gay community and eating disorder prevalence in gay and bisexual men. METHOD: One hundred and twenty six white heterosexuals and 388 white, black, Latino LGB men and women were sampled from community venues. DSM-IV diagnoses of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder were assessed using the World Health Organization's Composite International Diagnostic Interview. RESULTS: Gay and bisexual men had significantly higher prevalence estimates of eating disorders than heterosexual men. There were no differences in eating disorder prevalence between lesbian and bisexual women and heterosexual women, or across gender or racial groups. Attending a gay recreational group was significantly related to eating disorder prevalence in gay and bisexual men. CONCLUSION: Researchers should study the causes of the high prevalence of eating disorders among gay and bisexual men. Source: Int J Eat Disord. 2007 Apr;40(3):218-26.

Research Studies on Eating Disorders:

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is set to conduct a new long-term study of anorexia nervosa in 240 teens, ages 12 to 18. Researchers plan to start recruiting subjects on May 1 and will follow subjects for a four-year period. Six research facilities in the United States and Canada will work together with the NIMH on the new study, which will focus on early-intervention treatments. Experts believe that a combination of factors leads to anorexia. American society's worship of ultra-thinness places immense pressure on women - and on men, to a greater extent now than ever before. Research has found that a woman with an anorexic mother or sister is more likely to become anorexic herself. Also, parents who are highly focused on appearance, frequently go on diets, or make negative comments about their children's bodies are more likely to have a child who develops anorexia. Other factors which may lead to anorexia include trauma, a perfectionistic personality, and a genetic predisposition to the disorder. Getting help early on is crucial to effective treatment as anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental health disorder. Massachusetts Research Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss. Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia (or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours.  Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa. The study consists of 6 visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the course of the study. The Food & Feelings Workbook: A Full Course Meal on Emotional Health by Karen Koenig, LCSW. Success in overcoming eating problems depends on learning to effectively and appropriately handle emotions, specifically: guilt, shame, helplessness, anxiety, disappointment, confusion, and loneliness. In this dynamic workbook, Koenig interweaves lighthearted discussion with mindful, reflective exercises to show readers how to identify, experience, and learn from these feelings instead burying them in food-related behaviors. Writing from a foundation of cognitive-behavioral therapy, Koenig, author of the widely-used book, The Rules of Normal Eating, explains: the true purpose of emotions; why there is no such thing as a good or bad feeling; how to stop taking care of everyone else's needs instead of your own; why inner pain causes you to focus on weight, food, or appearance; ways to trust both your body and your feelings.  For more information go to  http://www.edreferral.com/books.htm and click on the Gurze Books banner.
