FOCUS OF THE MONTH

THE BREATH
By Cora Rosen

As soon as we enter the world from our mother's womb we take our first inhale and when we leave this world we take our final exhale. We can go weeks without food, days without water but only a few moments without the breath. As life takes a hold of us, we usually move throughout the day without even noticing the breath and the importance of it's purpose. Once we walk into the studio, roll out our mats and begin class, we can take the opportunity and the moments to listen and feel the breath giving ourselves the opportunity to free the mind, listen and deeply connect to our inner self.

In all the classes at the studio we emphasize and teach the Ujjayi breath. Ujjayi in Sanskrit means "the breath of victory" or victorious breath. We inhale and exhale through the nose as we swirl the air around in the back of the throat and nasal cavity creating a "ha" sound without the "a". By creating this sound we are stimulating the energy channels (nadis) in the throat and nasal cavity which promotes mental clarity and focus. This breath can also help bring down blood pressure, have a calming affect on the entire nervous system and create heat internally which burns out the toxins within the body. Lastly, by focusing on the sound of this breath and really being aware of it we then quiet the mind and can truly experience the moment.

Breathing is one of the foundations in yoga and once the breath is mastered or practiced then the postures become easier. In essence, the breath is more important than the postures. By focusing on the breath, even if for only a couple of moments, you allow yourself the experience of a true mind, body and soul connection...then the true journey of mind/body connection and the freedom that connection inhibits can be experienced.
