Symposium on Oct 7-8th, 2005, hosted by Summit
Eating Disorders and Outreach Program (SEDOP). This
third annual event provides information on the latest research
and treatment modalities for eating disorders. Keynote speakers
include Kathryn J. Zerbe, MD, author of "The Body
Betrayed" and Amy Baker Dennis, PhD, internationally
recognized speaker on eating disorders and borderline
personality disorder. Special breakout sessions focusing on
medical management, nutritional rehabilitation and therapeutic

in the Treatment of Eating Disorders – Complimentary
Educational Luncheons.
Effective
treatment of eating disorders requires cutting edge information
and tools, especially for the treatment-resistant patient. To
assist professionals in this area, Remuda Ranch will present
“Advanced Tools in the Treatment of Eating Disorders,” in a
series of luncheons throughout the country. Patients
with eating disorders often appear unmotivated and resist
change.
Therefore, clinicians must be able to help these
patients accept treatment. This presentation focuses on
specific interventions designed for patients who are struggling
with their commitment to treatment and motivation for recovery.
Participants will be given practical assessment tools
and assignments for use with patients and will experience

with Art Therapy.

Research Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If

Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the

The
National Institute of Mental Health -
The NIMH is sponsoring a study assessing appetite and reward in
eating disorders. Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years
old who are recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and
who are not taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking
place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study
involves the completion of interviews and questionnaires and
subjects undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of
the brain. There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are
covered and participants will be paid upon completion of the

National Institute of Mental Health - Research on Genes and Eating Disorders:
The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a
multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to

The Mirasol’s adolescent program for girls ages 12-17 in
Tucson, AZ is offering a summer partial scholarship for clients
who are not able to receive the residential treatment they so
desperately need. Although Mirasol’s teen program has an
accredited school, most classes are ending for the summer.
This is an 8 bed facility treating girls who are
challenged with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and obesity, as
well as, other residing addictive patterns. The adolescent
program combines an expansive array of experiential activities
with a strong inward focused therapeutic program.

Treatment Center News - Announcing the Emotional Eating Program
at Remuda Ranch: Summer Enrichment Program For Overweight Boys and Girls: Summer is
a season of fun for all kids. Now it can also be a time of
positive growth and change for boys and girls struggling with
weight issues or a negative body image. Remuda Ranch offers
therapeutic two-week summer enrichment programs for overweight
children ages 8-13. Each child will be assessed by a Registered
Dietitian and Licensed Masters Level Therapist. Meals and
snacks will be provided from a menu approved by a Registered
Dietitian. The children will benefit from various group
sessions led by a team of eating disorder specialists designed
to develop and maintain positive peer relationships, build self
esteem, and cope with stressful situations such as: Body Image
Group; Exercise; Peer-Interaction
Skills Group; Nutrition Experientials; Art;
Daily Devotional; Recreation; Managing Feelings Group. Throughout
each two-week session, the children will enjoy several off
campus activities and challenging experiences such as rock
climbing, swimming and gym-related activities. Family
involvement is important and a weekly support meeting for
parents is included. Remuda's professional Christian staff will
teach healthy approaches to nutrition and exercise, as well as
valuable life skills. Their goal is to educate and improve

Hills, CA Treatment Center News - Eating Disorder Intensive
Outpatient Program: Carolyn
Costin has opened a new Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient
Program (EDIOP) in Agoura Hills, CA. This program is for
females struggling with an eating disorder who need support in
addition to their individual therapy but do not need full day
treatment or inpatient care. The program meets three nights a
week and includes a supervised meal. Groups will be
co-facilitated by therapists specializing in the treatment of
eating disorders. The program utilizes a multi-disciplinary
approach including cognitive-behavioral, dialectal-behavioral,
psycho-educational, solution-focused, art therapy, attachment
theory and process group modalities. In addition, the group
facilitators introduce and practice specific relaxation
techniques useful in reducing anxiety and processing emotion.
The program operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from
6:30-9:30pm. Groups are facilitated by Rykia Peterson, IMF #41796

Announcing the formation of the Adolescent Eating Disorder
Outpatient Program for Young Women Beginning July 19th,
2005:
This program is appropriate for young women between the
ages of twelve and eighteen who are suffering from anorexia
nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. The program
meets Tuesday - Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and
includes dinner. The adolescent program consists of
experiential groups, art therapy, nutritional counseling as
well as family sessions and a special group for family members.
Each client is encouraged to maintain regular appointments with
their primary therapist and registered dietician if so desired.
The Adolescent Eating Disorder Outpatient Program is

Center News – The Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDC-Denver):
The EDC-Denver offers a full spectrum of care from partial
hospitalization through outpatient to males and females age 16
and older. The Partial Hospitalization Program operates 11
hours per day, 7 days per week and includes supervised meals
and snacks. The Evening Intensive Outpatient Program operates 4
hours per evening, three days per week. Most of the Eating
Disorder Center of Denver's program components are available on
an outpatient basis. Services include individual and
family/couples therapy; group therapy including DBT; aftercare;
psychiatric evaluation; therapy and medication monitoring and

Aftercare Group:
This group meets Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm and Tuesday
evenings 5:30-7:00pm. The group is an open group consisting of
individuals in recovery who have completed an intense eating
disorders program at EDC-D or other national programs. Cost:

DBT Skills Training:
The adult group meets Monday evenings 5:00-6:30pm; the
adolescent group meets Tuesday evenings from 4:00-5:30pm. The
group consists of didactic and experiential education in four
different skill areas: core mindfulness, interpersonal
effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

a 12-week ongoing group utilizing cognitive behavioral and
experiential techniques to mend the relationship between a

Eating Disorders Anonymous:
This group meets every Saturday from 2:00-3:00pm. It is a
free, open support group for individuals suffering and
recovering from eating disorders. The meetings are held at the

Family and Friends Support Group: This group meets the first and third Thursday of
each month from 6:00-8:30pm. The group is for families and
friends of individuals suffering with eating disorders to come

Treatment Center News - "Reality Based Treatment for
Eating Disorders."
Milestones Eating Disorders Program offers residential
treatment for anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, and
related disorders. The program is unique in so far as offering
a supportive and structured environment while providing real
world experiences such as preparing meals, grocery shopping,
and participating in an array of activities simulating one's at
home setting. Participants live within an apartment setting and
are afforded opportunities to attend a variety of evening
support groups while attending group and individual therapies
during the day. The program is part of a facility, which is
JCAHO accredited (Joint Commission for Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations) and licensed by the State of Florida
to provide residential treatment as well as intensive
outpatient services. The overall philosophy of Milestones is
one of providing the treatment within a less restrictive
setting than the traditional hospital environment and providing
people with ample opportunities to put into practice those
skills necessary to maintain their recovery when they return

uniquely honors each woman's struggles and triumphs. Two
