Research
on Eating Disorders:
Adolescents with anorexia
nervosa: multiple perspectives of discharge readiness. Turrell
SL, Davis R, Graham H, Weiss I. Eating Disorders Program,
Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. PROBLEM: Little is known
about the conditions that must be in place to help adolescent
patients and their families gain the confidence needed to
continue recovery at home, following the adolescents'
hospitalization for anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Beliefs about
discharge readiness were obtained through an open-ended
questionnaire following the patients' first weekend pass home
from an in-patient unit. The perceptions of patients, parents,
and registered nurses were obtained using parallel versions of
a questionnaire. FINDINGS: An examination of the responses
revealed four themes; medical stability, education,
psychological changes, and community resource planning, that
were common to all respondents, as well as themes specific to
adolescents and to nurses. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest
that each group of respondents has unique discharge readiness
needs and that registered nurses have an important role to play
in helping patients and families make the transition home as
successful as possible. PMID: 16137269. J Child Adolesc
Psychiatr Nurs. 2005 Jul-Sep;18(3):116-26.
The mortality
rate from anorexia nervosa. Birmingham CL, Su J, Hlynsky JA,
Goldner EM, Gao M. Department
of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada. OBJECTIVE:
We determined the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) in our
anorexia nervosa (AN) patient population. METHOD: We used a
cross-sectional design to study an inception cohort (1981-2000)
drawn from the provincial tertiary care eating disorders
program at St. Paul's Hospital (British Columbia, Canada). All
patients who completed their initial assessment for an eating
disorder were included in the study. Vital status, date and
cause of death from British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency,
date of assessment, date of birth, and diagnosis at the time of
assessment were collected for each patient. RESULTS: Of 954
patients, 326 diagnosed with AN completed an assessment over
the 20 years. The SMR was 10.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] =
5.5-15.5) for AN. DISCUSSION: Some studies in the literature
report that AN has the highest mortality rate of any
psychiatric disorder in young females. However, others dispute
this fact and report an SMR lower than the normal population
mortality (SMR = 0.71). Contrary to some reports in the
literature, our study confirms a high mortality rate within the
AN population. (c) 2005 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PMID:

Research Studies:
Research Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research Study - Massachusetts General
Hospital Study of Therapy for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of
Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting research studies
on anorexia-induced bone loss. Their treatment study is for
women aged 18-45 with anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular
menstrual periods. They are investigating the combined use of a
natural hormone and a medication that is effective for bone
loss in postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone
loss seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the
combination of these two investigational medications will help
rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone breakdown in
women with anorexia nervosa. The study has 4 outpatient visits
and 2 inpatient visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675
is awarded throughout the course of the study. If interested,
call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.

the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study involves
the completion of interviews and questionnaires and subjects
undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.
There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are covered and
participants will be paid upon completion of the study. For
more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu
or visit the website www.anbn.org.
The National Institute of Mental
Health - Research on Genes and Eating Disorders:
The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a
multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu

Treatment
Center News:
Arizona
Treatment Center News –Remuda Ranch: Today,
eating disorders are diagnosed in girls as young as six years
old and are
occurring more often in children ages 8-11. In
fact, the average age for onset of a diagnosable eating
disorder is 13. Because children and adolescents have different
issues and needs, Remuda Ranch offers separate treatment
centers in Wickenburg, Arizona. Their adolescent program treats
teenage girls age 13 to 17; while their children’s program
focuses on helping girls, age 12 and younger. Research
indicates that the earlier these disorders are addressed, the
better the outcome. The
summer months often prove to be an excellent time to embrace
treatment with the least amount of interruption.
Without the distraction of school and friends, young
people can focus on getting better. For additional information
about their Christian treatment programs, which offer hope and
healing to patients of all faiths, call 1-800-445-1900.
