Research
on Eating Disorders:
Shame
and social anxiety in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: Grabhorn
R, Stenner
H, Kaufbold
J, Overbeck
G, Stangier
U. Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and
Psychotherapy (Hs. 17), Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, D-60590
Frankfurt
,
Germany. grabhorn@em.uni-frankfurt.de. OBJECTIVES: The importance of
shame for the understanding of eating disorders has been
well-known for a long time, but only few empirical studies
exist to date on this aspect. Particularly the sense of
self-esteem and external appearance have been attributed a
major influence in the emergence of shame. Since social anxiety
has increasingly been considered to be a factor in recent
discussions related to eating disorders, and shame is a primary
symptom of social phobia and of social anxiety in general, the
present study focuses on shame and social anxiety in anorexia
and bulimia, as compared to other clinical disorders. Another
research question is the extent to which the prevalence of
shame in eating disorders is influenced by self-esteem,
attitudes about appearance and social anxiety. METHODS: The
sample consists of 104 (female) patients, comprising 26
patients, respectively, with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa,
anxiety disorders and depression. The various variables were
recorded with the Internalized Shame Scale (ISS), the Social
Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS),
the Appearance Attitude Scale (AAS) and the Social Autonomous
Self-Esteem Scale (SAS). RESULTS: Patients with anorexia and
bulimia nervosa have higher scores in internalized global shame
than patients with anxiety disorders and depressions. In
contrast to anorectic patients, however, patients with bulimia
also have higher scores than the other two groups in the area
of social performance anxiety; they also differ significantly
from the anxiety disorders in terms of interaction anxiety. In
the multiple regression analysis of the patients with eating
disorders, self-esteem, performance anxiety and perfectionism
with regard to appearance prove to be predictors of the affect
of shame. DISCUSSION: The findings indicate that not just
shame, but also social anxiety, should be regarded as important
influencing factors, especially in the case of bulimia nervosa.
The question remains as to what extent social anxiety is a
result of shame being projected onto the body. For therapeutic
considerations, it seems advisable to work on the affect of
shame and also include the aspect of social anxiety in focused
therapy strategies. Z

Research
Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research
Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the
course of the study. If interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C
at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health -
The NIMH is sponsoring a study assessing appetite and reward in
eating disorders. Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years
old who are recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and
who are not taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking
place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study
involves the completion of interviews and questionnaires and
subjects undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of
the brain. There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are
covered and participants will be paid upon completion of the
study. For more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu
or visit the website www.anbn.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health
- Research on Genes and Eating Disorders:
The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a
multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu
or visit www.angenetics.org.

Study on Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships: Rebecca
Kenyon, MA, MFT of Trish Stanley and Associates and Oak Knoll
Family Therapy Center is conducting a doctoral dissertation on
eating disorders and marital relationships. She is looking for
married women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia
nervosa to participate in a 1½-hour interview with their
spouse. The interview will be scheduled at a mutually
convenient day and time, and can take place at participants'
treatment facilities, if applicable, or at one of Ms. Kenyon's
San Diego
County
offices. Phone interviews can also be conducted if participants
reside out of the area. Each couple will
receive a book on eating disorders as a thank you for
participating. The hope is that by having both the wife's
and husband's perspectives, a better understanding of how
best to support them both in treatment and recovery
may be achieved. If interested, call Rebecca Kenyon, MA, MFT at

Dr. Jan Yager is conducting a confidential survey on weight
histories and welcomes participants, both male and female.
