Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Comparison
of long-term outcomes in adolescents with anorexia nervosa
treated with family therapy. Lock J, Couturier J, Agras WS. OBJECTIVE:
To describe the relative effectiveness of a short versus long
course of family-based therapy (FBT) for adolescent anorexia
nervosa at long-term follow-up. METHOD: This study used
clinical and structured interviews to assess psychological and
psychosocial outcomes of adolescents (ages 12-18 years at
baseline) who were previously treated in a randomized clinical
trial using family therapy between 1999 and 2002. RESULTS:
Eighty-three percent (71/86) of subjects participated in
follow-up assessments of current psychological and psychosocial
functioning. In addition, 49% (35) were interviewed using the
Eating Disorder Examination. Mean length of follow-up was 3.96
years (range 2.3-6.0 years). There were no statistically
significant differences between the two groups on any measure
at long-term follow-up. As a whole, the group was doing well
with 89% above 90% ideal body weight, 74% with Eating Disorder
Examination scores within the normal range, and 91% of
postmenarcheal females not on birth control had menstrual
return. CONCLUSIONS:: A short course of family therapy is as
effective as a longer course at follow-up. J Am Acad Child
Adolesc Psychiatry. 2006 Jun;45(6):666-72.

. OBJECTIVE: Laxative abuse is common in patients with anorexia
and bulimia nervosa and has been associated with longer
duration of illness, suicide attempts, impulsivity, and greater
eating and general psychopathology. We explored the extent to
which laxative abuse was associated with specific
psychopathological features across eating disorder subtypes.
METHODS: Participants were 1021 individuals from the multisite,
International Price Foundation Genetic Studies. Axis I
disorders, personality disorders and traits, and obsessive
compulsive features were assessed. RESULTS: Laxative abuse was
associated with worse eating disorder and general
psychopathology and higher prevalence of borderline personality
disorder (BPD). Symptom level analyses revealed that specific
features of BPD, including suicidality and self-harm, feelings
of emptiness, and anger, were most strongly associated with
laxative abuse. CONCLUSIONS: The function of laxative abuse may
differ across individuals with eating disorders, alternatively
serving as a method of purging and a form of self-harm.

Online
Interactive Recovery Tools:
Family
and Friends of Depressed Individuals Now Have Free Confidential
Online Support.
MySelfHelp.com, the world™s leading provider of online,
interactive self-help programs and tools, has introduced Caring
for Your Depressed Loved One, a free and confidential online
program available 24 hours a day for family and friends who
want to learn more, obtain support, and help someone who is
suffering from depression. This program is similar to the
Caring for Your Loved One program for eating disorders.
Those who love and care about someone who is depressed or
has an eating disorder feel helpless, frightened, frustrated,
and alone, said Dr. Richard Bedrosian, president of
MySelfHelp.com and the leading expert on online self-help
resources. We wanted to create programs that would educate
them about depression, eating disorders, and other mental
health problems and provide them with the help and support they
need “ both for their loved ones, and for themselves.
Too Few Resources for Families According to Dr. Bedrosian,
caregivers often feel isolated and confused about how to help,
and may experience a range of painful emotions, including fear,
anxiety, sadness, frustration, guilt, or anger. Many are unable
to get the appropriate support, or are uncomfortable talking
with others about their loved one™s depression or eating
disorder. śOur programs teach them how to help themselves, as
well as what to do to help their loved one “ and what not to
do.ť
Family
of Programs Developed through NIMH Funding:
The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive, online, self-help
programs includes Defeating Depression, Take Control of
Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management, Overcoming
Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem, Coping with Grief, Caring
for Your Loved One, Help for Compulsive Shopping, Conquer
Insomnia, and Hope for HIV and Depression, as well as a
moderated member Discussion Board. MySelfHelp.com programs were
developed in part through grants from the National Institute of
Mental Health, and these programs are designed to complement
therapy, reinforce treatment goals, and improve treatment
outcomes.
Clinical
Trials Show Positive Results: MySelfHelp.com
just completed clinical outcome studies on the Stop Binge
Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating Depression, and
Conquer Insomnia programs, and the results showed a 43%
decrease in binge eating and a 51% decrease in purging after
three months and a 45% decrease in binge eating and 59%
decrease in purging after six months of using the programs.
Results are similar for depression symptoms. Detailed results
can be found on the individual program pages at www.MySelfHelp.com.
Positive
results such as these are leading more providers, from solo
practitioners to residential treatment centers, to recommend
the use of interactive self-help programs to their clients.

Life
Without Ed by Jenni Schaefer with Thom Rutledge.
Jenni had been in an abusive relationship with Ed for far too
long. Ed's name comes from the initials E.D. - as in eating
disorder. He controlled Jenni™s life, distorted her
self-image, and tried to physically harm her throughout their
long affair. Then Jenni met psychotherapist and author Thom
Rutledge. He taught her how to treat her eating disorder as a
relationship, not a condition. By thinking of her eating
disorder as a unique personality separate from her own, Jenni
was able to break up with Ed once and for all. Inspiring,
compassionate, and filled with practical exercises to help you
break up with your own personal E.D., Life Without Ed provides
new hope for the disorders that plague millions of women and
young girls. Beginning with Jenni™s śdivorceť from Ed,
this supportive, lifesaving book combines a patient™s
insights and experiences with a therapist™s prescriptions for
success to help you live a healthier, happier life without Ed.
Jenni Schaefer is a singer, songwriter, and author of
Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her
Eating Disorder and How You Can Too (McGraw-Hill). For more
