Acupuncture Study of the month: Osteoarthritis of the knee

A major study published in October gives confirms the medical benefits of acupuncture. Researchers say the therapy may help reduce the need for patients with arthritis to take anti-inflammatory drugs, which can have significant side effects.

It was studied by Dr. Claudia Witt of the University Medical Centre, Berlin, Germany, and colleagues, who recruited 3,553 patients with chronic pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee or hip.

The patients were divided into three groups; one randomly assigned to 15 sessions of acupuncture over three months, one randomly assigned to standard treatment then acupuncture for three months, and a large group given acupuncture (who did not consent to randomisation).

Acupuncture in addition to routine care showed significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life compared with patients who received routine care alone.

The improvement in symptoms continued after the treatment had ended. Following this study, German doctors and health insurers may recommend that the cost of acupuncture is reimbursed via state health insurance.

Herb of the Month: Broccoli Sprouts

An amazing compound found in 3-7 day old broccoli sprouts, Sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS) can protect us against cancer.Sulforaphane increases the body's own defense system against carcinogens. Cells in the body contain a family of detoxification enzymes (Phase 2 enzymes) that neutralize cancer-causing chemicals as well as free radicals before they damage DNA and initiate cancer.
"Chemoprotection is a deliberate effort to increase the body's defense systems against chemicals, including carcinogens, that can lead to disease," according to John Hopkins University Professor Dr. Talalay. "Chemoprotection may lower a person's risk of developing cancer by building up the body's own defenses".

Broccoli sprouts are a concentrated source of cancer-fighting sulforaphane.

Positive research is coming in, for a wide range of CANCER PROTECTION cancers, Bladder, Breast, Colon, Liver, Lung, Prostate, Skin.

LIVER
In a rural area of China where there is a very high prevalence of liver cancer due to a confluence of hepatitis virus and environmental toxins, scientists at Johns Hopkins University and Qidong Liver Institute PRC, near Shanghai performed experiments to measure the ability of broccoli sprouts to increase the body's abilities to detoxify carcinogens. The change in these biomarkers strongly suggests that there was an enhanced detoxification (neutralization) of carcinogens from the human body leading to a reduction in cancer risk.

Acupuncture Eases Low Back Pain

Researcher recommends the treatment be an option in public health systems

A British study suggests people suffering from low back pain may get at least some added relief from acupuncture compared with standard treatments.
Based on the findings, MacPherson says it would be worthwhile for publicly funded health-care systems to pay for the treatment. "Our recommendation is that routine acupuncture should be provided as an option."

The study involved 241 adults who had been suffering from low back pain for four to 52 weeks. They were randomly assigned to have up to 10 acupuncture sessions over three months, or the usual treatment recommended by their doctor.

People who had received acupuncture were also more likely to report not having needed medication to treat their back pain compared with patients receiving usual care: 68 versus 20, respectively.
