Study of the month: Acupuncture for Gastrointestinal Symptoms

A recent Duke University Medical Center study, acupuncture may be effective in patients with functional GI disorders because it has been shown to alter acid secretion, GI motility, and visceral pain. In some patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional dyspepsia (FD), peristalsis and gastric motility are impaired. The stimulatory effects of acupuncture at Acupoint ST-36 on GI motility may be beneficial to patients with GERD or FD, as well as to those with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The effects of acupuncture at Acupoint CV-12 on GI motility may be beneficial to patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS, because enhanced colonic motility and accelerated colonic transit are reported in such patients.

Acupuncture at acupoint CV-12 may inhibit gastric acid secretion via the somatosympathetic pathway. Thus, acupuncture may be beneficial to GERD patients.

In the future, it is expected that acupuncture will be used in the treatment of patients with functional GI disorders.

Herb of the Month: Power Mushrooms

Maitake, shiitake, and reishi mushrooms have many overlapping properties: all boost immune function, all support cardiovascular health, and all show promise in lowering the risk of - or treating - cancer. However, maitake is specifically recommended for the stomach and intestines, as well as blood sugar levels; shiitake treats nutritional deficiencies and liver ailments; and reishi promotes respiratory health and spirituality.

These medicinal mushrooms have been shown to boost heart health; lower the risk of cancer, promote immune function; ward off viruses, bacteria, and fungi; reduce inflammation; combat allergies; help balance blood sugar levels; and support the body's detoxification mechanisms.

I often use all three combined into one formula to be taken regularly as part of a Wellness Supplement Plan and at very least make an effort to include them regularly in your diet for your optimum health!

Headaches, have you tried the Chiropractic approach?

Chiropractic is one of the most popular alternative therapies currently available. We all know about chiropractic care for slipped disks or pinched nerves, but few are aware of its benefits for headaches. Most headaches in the general population are caused by problems in the neck, and are consequently named cervicogenic (born from the neck) or tension headaches. When there is tension on this muscle, caused by prior trauma, stress, or lack of motion or alignment in the cervical spine, pulling of this very pain sensitive dura mater sends signals to the brain that are interpreted as a headache.

Your chiropractor will be able to evaluate your symptoms with a detailed history, x-ray or other diagnostic imaging technique, and by feeling the vertebrae and muscles in your neck. If chiropractic treatment is indicated, the chiropractor will use a specific, short, quick thrust called an adjustment to relieve the tension in these muscles and to regain motion in these vertebrae.
