FLAMINGO CANTINA IN AUSTIN, TEXAS
|
UPCOMING SHOWS DOORS OPEN AT 8:30 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED WED JUN 06 REGGAE WEDNESDAY! MATTHEW SHEPARD & THE RUCKUS, PHATTS McNATT
Relatively new to the Austin scene, Matthew Shepherd combines a love of roots reggae and mellow funk grooves with clever instrumentation (upright bass, vibes and cello have been featured in the past) and conscious lyrics to create a sound that's part Ben Harper, part Jack Johnson, with maybe even a dash of G Love. I dig it, and think you will, too. Phatts McNatt, a freaky funk duo that's just arrived to town, opens.
REGGAE/FUNK THU JUN 07 MAU MAU CHAPLAINS DR DUBBIST
Comprised of Austin music scene veterans dating back to greats such as The Lotions, The Mau Mau Chaplains combine a reverence of roots with an appreciation for things like The Dead and New Rider of the Purple Sage to create a sound that's distinctly reggae and distinctly hill country, too. Dr. Dubbist gets the party started right with his impressive collection and mixin' of reggae.
REGGAE SAT JUN 09 GRIMY STYLES
Before they split for their first West Coast tour, how's about giving the Grimy boys a sendoff? A love of traditional dub grooves combined with a progressive attitude toward melodicism and machines, Grimy's sound is classically futuristic.
DUB WED JUNE 13 RYAN SCROGGINS & THE TRENCHTOWN TEXANS HI-LITES, SINAI FIYAH
Midweek ska and reggae…who could ask for more? Scroggins rounds the night out with an organ driven sound that's somewhere between the two aforementioned genres...if you're familiar with the conjunto skapunk of Skarnales and you're a fan, you should definitely check out Ryan's new trip…less punk, more groove. LA's own Hi-Lites pass through town, and the deep grooves of the ragga garage known as Sinai Fiyah kicks things off.
SKA/REGGAE THU JUN 14 JAH ROOTS WOODBELLY
Tennessee’s own Jah Roots pass through with their jammy take on roots rock reggae, and the funky ska and reggae grooves of Woodbelly recall SoCal dudes Sublime, although their sound is decidedly more funk and reggae than punk. Dig it.
REGGAE/SKA/FUNK WED JUN 20 GLOBAL MUSIC SHOWCASE WITH HR (BAD BRAINS) CONTRA COUP
"Iconoclastic, enigmatic and angst-ridden are words used to describe former front man for the punk/thrash metal group Bad Brains, H.R. (Ras Hailu Gabriel Joseph I). A devout Rastafarian, H.R.’s songs, a seamless blend of singing, rap and African chanting, demand social and economic equality and an end to oppression and racism. He got his start with the Washington, D.C.-based Bad Brains, and sang with them through the ‘80s" (Sandra Brennan, All Music Guide)
H.R. and the Dubb Agents are bringing their unique blend of dub reggae to the Cantina. Contra Coup, a new Austin group that features a Stinger, opens. Don't miss it.
DUB/REGGAE/SKA THU JUN 21 ADRIAN CROOM PRESENTS AUSTIN BEAT BATTLE FEATURING VARIOUS LOCAL MCs, PRODUCERS AND DJs
Adrian Croom throws a party and lets the beatmakers and others on the ATX hiphop scene battle all night long.
HIP HOP FRI JUN 22 THULSA DOOM SPECIAL GUESTS
Noisy, groovy, funky, adventurous…Thulsa Doom features members of Alpharhythm, Erbamate and other funk groups of a few years back that are sorely missed from the scene today. T Doom is just getting their groove going, and y'all should check it. If you're a fan of MMW, STS9, Sun Ra, McLaughlin, this may be type of deal you should hit.
OTHER/ETC. SAT JUN 23 CALI ZACK PRESENTS: AUSTIN SHOWCASE OF MC'S & DJ'S
Hands down my favorite local MC, Cali Zack throws yet another impressive party that showcases ATX talent. Lineup TBA.
HIP HOP WED JUN 27 SINAI FIYAH VIDA DELUXE, DJ JON NELSON
Sinai Fiyah keeps the groove kicking every other Wednesday, with Vida Deluxe opening and DJ JN holding down the fort til late in the evening.
REGGAE THUJUN 28 MOVING MATTER WILX
Fresh off the road where they hit the infamous Wakarusa Festival in Lawrence, Moving Matter brings their futuristic take on poppy funk to the Cantina, with road dogs in Wilx opening.
GROOVE/JAM FRI JUN 29 BOMBASTA FUGA, RATTLETREE
Talk about the kitchen sink stylistically, I just don't know where to start. Rattletree kicks things off being the wicked marimba combo that they are, and you won't hear another band that sounds like them anywhere in Texas, much less the country. Fuga? Bombasta? What don't they play is the real question – dub/reggae, funk, latin…who knows? What I do know is it'll make you move.
LATIN/GROOVE/FUNK/REGGAE SAT JUN 29 GRIMY STYLES THE DRASTICS, CONTRA COUP
Welcome Grimy Styles home from their West Coast tour for a night of killer dub. The Contra Coup opens, Chicago's Drastic bring the deep groove, and Grimy will close.
DUB/REGGAE MARK YOUR CALENDARS 07.20 THE MELODIANS
The Melodians are one of Jamaica's greatest Rocksteady groups, cutting a series of classic singles during the late '60s and early '70s that included the internationally famed "Rivers of Babylon" and "Sweet Sensation." In 1966, when driving rhythms of ska were abandoned in favor of the slower, more soulful Rocksteady, Jamaican performers discovered a freedom of expression they had previously been denied. In overcoming the limitations of ska the dawn of the Rocksteady age begun. A few groups rose to notoriety with none more popular than The Melodians.

Wayne Wonder new album "Foreva" Slated for June 30 Release
|
VP Records will release international dancehall reggae sensation Wayne Wonder's newest album 'Foreva' this summer. A follow-up to his 2003 smash release 'No Holding Back', 'Foreva' features the single "Again" and includes an infectious reggae remake of the Thompson Twins 1984 classic "Hold Me Now" produced by No Doubt's Tony Kanal.
Wayne Wonder is world renowned for his buttery vocals, driving beats and impossibly catchy hooks and 'Foreva' is poised to be the soundtrack for the summer of 2007 -- it's guaranteed to be heard blasting out of car windows, dominating the airwaves and pulsating through nightclubs all over the globe.
A household name in Jamaica for nearly 15 years, 2002 saw Wayne Wonder's first ever #1 mainstream US hit with the romantic single "No Letting Go" -- released by Atlantic Records. "No Letting Go" was a crossover hit and catapulted Wonder into the stratosphere with a 2003 appearance on Saturday Night Live, a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, a peak chart position at #11 on the Billboard’s Top 200, and nonstop airplay on Urban and Pop radio stations nationwide.
Wayne Wonder is scheduled to appear on June 17 at Jamaica Gold 12th Anniversary party at their weekly home inside Forbidden City, 1718 Vine in Hollywood, California

You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.
The Reggae Festival Guide Magazine is an annual publication which comes out in May. RBA Publishing (also home of sister publication Blues Festival Guide) prints 100,000 copies of the magazine which spotlights festivals throughout the year, feature stories on festivals around the world, radio DJ listings and stories with messages of upliftment.
For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter.
The readership is now over 10,000 reggae fans and counting. Each week, The Reggae Festival E-Guide reaches members of the Reggae community around the world.
The E-Guide is currently edited by Reggae Festival Guide's Marketing Director, Justine Ketola. Click here to email Justine.
