Paradise Communications Announces Date Change for Port Royal Fest

Paradise Communications, the promoters of the Port Royal music festival have officially decided to moved the event from August 24- 26 due to conflict with the impending 2007 general elections, which will occur on August 27th. The official date of the festival is now set for September 7-9, 2007.
The weekend event was rescheduled to ensure that patrons get the opportunity to enjoy the full Port Royal experience as well as comfortably exercise their right to participate in the elections.
The Port Royal music festival, Kingston’s premier music festival, will maintain its high standard of quality that is characteristic of Paradise Communications. The line up has not been affected by the date change and the festival will still boast international superstars Brian McKnight, Regina Belle and Maxi Priest along with local singing sensations Tarrus Riley and his father Jimmy Riley, just to name a few.
The signature celebrity party will be kicking of the festivities on September 7th. The main show will be on the 8th followed by Jazz on the Harbor on the 9th which will tune down the weekend on a smooth and mellow note. From September 7- 9 Jamaica can expect for Port Royal to truly be transformed and restored to its olden days of glory.

TWO-DAY REGGAE AT THE PARK FESTIVAL WITH ZIGGY MARLEY, MIDNITE AND MORE ON AUGUST 3 AND 4 AT TRUCKEE REGIONAL PARK AMPHITHEATER IN TRUCKEE, CA

One of reggae's royal family, Ziggy Marley will be headlining day one of Reggae At The Park in Truckee on Brockway Drive off Hwy 267 on Friday, August 3. Opening for Ziggy are Dub Conscious from Macon, GA. Then the St. Croix roots-reggae sensation, Midnite headlines the second day of festivities. Opening that show are Jamaica harmony legends, the Abysinnians. On each day, the gates open at 4:30 and the music is from 5pm until 10pm. A beer garden, arts and crafts vendors and delicious foods round out the festival experience.

On tour in support of his latest release, his second solo album, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide), winner of the 2007 Grammy award for Best Reggae Album, Ziggy says, "This album is from my heart." Embracing both the spiritual and emotional side of life, Ziggy has definitively come into his own as an artist. The twelve-track album showcases Ziggy's tightly rolled talents as a songwriter (writing all cuts), musician (playing most of the instruments) and producer (shepherding all dozen tracks, with three co-produced by Grammy winner Ross Hogarth). The only thing more joyful than making it, says Ziggy, is performing in front of fans on his tour.

Written "all over the world,"with some songs penned during his youth, Love Is My Religion expands upon the personal, social and political themes explored in Ziggy¹s debut CD, Dragonfly. Its musical center is clearly reggae, peppered by African percussion and other flavors. Opening with the subversively danceable "Into the Groove," Ziggy delves into an upbeat meditation on finding one's self. On the title track, "Love is My Religion," his message is one that "people need to hear," a unifying devotion to love that "needs to be preached in churches and mosque and synagogues" The notion of overcoming stereotypes and superstition informs the slinky "Black Cat," while the romantic "Make Some Music" finds a partner in the mid-tempo "A Lifetime."

Friendship is one of the album's recurring themes, whether as the core of monogamous love or the connective tissue of global brotherhood. "Friend" and "On the Beach in Hawaii" each offer an ode to love. In "Keep on Dreamin", Ziggy extends the idea into the spiritual world, reconnecting with his father through dreams. The album's most political song, "Be Free," implores the listener to reject the manipulating power of fear. Slavery and its continuing effects are explored on "Still the Storms," which
laments the crises in nations like Sudan, Rwanda and Sierra Leone by analogizing thepath of hurricanes with the path of slave ships. The album closes with the simple and the complex: an acoustic guitar version of "Love Is My Religion" and a bass-heavy, trip-hop mix of "Be Free."

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy first sat in on recording sessions with his father when he was ten years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae.

DUBCONSCIOUS will perform on Saturday at 6pm. "One of Dubconscious' most sacred mantras is: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." The band often says, "We deeply believe in those important words, and do our best to represent our ideals as we tour. We aim to live and tour sustainably by using bio-diesel fuel, recycling, selling organic merchandise and educating our fans about critical issues"...

Poised to become another name that's dropped when discussions of the world-class Athens, Georgia music scene commence, Dubconscious embraces the role of torchbearer. The band has been testifying to impressed audiences throughout the fertile music cradle of the Southeast for years, and now plays to audiences all over the country.

Hailing from the Island of St Croix, Midnite is one of the most promising roots reggae bands of the millennium. They are vanguards of conscious reggae whose profound and innovative lyrics are sincere and deeply rooted. Their CD recordings and live performances will have reggae and non-reggae listeners open to the messages they bring.

Lead singer Vaughn Benjamin's electrifying voice seems an amalgamation of many great voices in reggae--soulful, chanting, edgy. Vaughn's potent lyrical style and his brother Ron's exquisite keyboards and musical directorship form the nucleus of this musical quintet, which includes fellow St. Croix players Dion Hopkins (drums), Philip Merchant (bass) and Abijah (guitar). Midnite weaves the cultural lyrics of "old school" roots music with modern day experiences to create a unique listening encounter. Reggae - naked and raw is an apt description for Midnite's musical style, in which they forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements.

Their vigorous, weighty sound, driven by the punchy bass lines creates a vibe that penetrates straight to the heart. These epic musical communions have earned Midnite an enormous following throughout the roots community. This is especially true in St. Croix, Puerto Rico, Brazil, St. Louis and here on the West Coast where they have toured extensively. By breaking all the rules, Midnite is setting a new standard. Armed with a firm foundation in Jah Rastafari, their natural talents, and a strong and uncompromising musical vision, Midnite champions a unique sound that is on the cutting edge of modern roots music.

The Abysinnians, Jamaican vocal harmony trio was formed in 1968 by founding members Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning. Linford Manning along with another brother, Carlton Manning was a member of the famed 60's group, Carlton and the Shoes. The next year the trinity of harmonic voices drafted the blueprint of a song, "Satta Massagana" that would launch them into the cannon of Reggae music greats.

"Satta Massagana" became one of reggae's most popular songs; a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language. This hymn was released on the most famous Jamaican label of them all, Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. Satta's spiritual and universal message became an anthem that was heard on the radios, in the dancehalls and in the churches of Jamaica. It was also covered by many other international artists including Third World, which raised the status of their work to legendary reggae status.

The Abyssinians have been touring since early 1997, including dates at Reggae on the River, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival and The Bob Marley Day Festival in California 1998. The Abyssinians were also nominated for a 1999 Tamika Award with the ceremonies in New York City. The 2001 Spring tour included a spellbinding performance with multiple encores at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. In 2005 Bernard Collins rejoined Donald Manning, and "Star " David Morrison to continue to tour internationally. The backing band occasionally includes up to five of Donald Manning¹s sons who are in high demand as studio and touring musicians in their own right.

Samoreggaestan, Music Against Violence Reggae Festival

From august 16th to 18th the resort Trije kralji above Slovenska Bistrica in Slovenia will be overflown with sounds of a reggae music.

An idyllic Slovenian nature, meadows, surrounded by pine forests on the sunny side of Pohorje will be filled up with reggae vibes. Relaxation is guaranteed for each visitor. Camping on the soft mountain grass, parking space nearby, program on the main and sound-system stage, various artists, performers, work shops, sport events etc. is provided for all reggae fans. Everything is also included in ticket price.

Samoreggaestan Music Against the Violence Festival is also a socially critical festival with motive Exodus. One of the strongest theme of reggae music in a modern language represents migrations, structural violence against foreigners, questions about integration politics and identity. The topic question concerning European Union is integration politics for all ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious minorities, above all are those originating from present time (fugitives, economical immigrants etc.). Imperfections of integration model lead to social, educational and other differences among all people in EU. Intolerance between social groups is unavoidable. A state and a society should raise questions about managing those differences and shall enable equal possibilities and inclusion for everyone instead of performing nationalistic politics, forcing an assimilation and causing structural obstacles. Above all, the differences are creative and social advantage. These topics will be discussed in several workshops, various expertswill give lectures, there will be an exhibition, a performance by Zlati Kastrioti theatre group, international video production ShortCut07, we will also host Austrian drummers' project and few work shops.

We wish to exceed last year's festival's response and prove that the young and young by heart can contribute to a better society and a quality of life. We can make changes and influence on the institutions which do not recognize our equality despite our differences. The festival area will again be proclaimed as the peace zone and in the end young people, who are against any kind of violence as a form of communication with differences will send a mutual message to those institutions that avail theirselves of it.

Commentary: Jamaica's Local Music Industry

by Christopher "Icey Jace" Campbell

As an aspiring entrepreneur in the multibillion dollar a year global music industry a few days ago I decided to evaluate our own local industry based on Talent, Professionalism and Vision as these characteristics I believe are essential to our growth as a united hub looking to converge on international markets. Not surprisingly the results were a shame to even acknowledge much less write about. Not entirely statistical but facts are just that “Fax’s” and the truth cannot be blundered. I was utterly disappointed in the main industry associations, companies and sponsors right across the board. Having set a solid foundation in some areas from the early to late 90’s suddenly at the turn of the century the supporting beams of that foundation collapsed and left the music in disarray. The main cause was the ”me myself and I” syndrome. Quiet frankly it just seems as though we’ve all coexisted over the last few years with no form of general direction for our beloved music.

Vision defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "foresight, insight and understanding" is surely not present in our industry, you mad... Too often 365 days a year (366 in a leap year) we see artists and their management teams take the same mechanical approach to success which is arguably non existent. They “hustle a one tune” in the studio’s then “beg a forward” from selectors and radio DJ’s then “get a one buss” and for the rest of their careers put out seemingly average singles on vaguely successful albums and do stage shows after stage shows to stay afloat. There is no dynamics, no map, no blueprint, just a “hammer and a chisel”. In a recent article entitled Inside the music biz posted June 9, 2006 in the Daily Observer Entertainment consultant Teddy Laidley highlighted that an artist must be considered a product and in order to be successful he/she must have an ultimate career goal listed in a written business plan so as to help the artist stay motivated and focused. This is obviously lacking with our contingent of aspirants. It seems everyone is quiet comfortable with local credits. Very few seek to earn their bread n butter elsewhere apart from yard. Yard vibe sweet eh….

Professionalism derived from the adjective professional is defined as being experienced, knowledgeable, proficient & qualified. This in turn speaks to standards, quality and effectiveness which are for the most part absent. It always seems as though they short change themselves when they fail to accurately plan each and every step. Some artists never seem to posses the total package while their management teams never seem to go the whole nine yards as it relates to promotion and marketing. It also seems as if contracts make many artists nervous. Many are all for collecting off record labels but are terrified when they see a document that requires proper interpretation and that all important signature. To go a step further many management teams are not aware of the techniques needed to draft proposals, reports and contracts that often times “dem jus go link a man, weh know a man, weh know di big man”. This is unacceptable, it seem many business decisions are made on hype and not facts or results, probably the reason why only a handful of artist is allowed international passage every 2 – 3 years. Note: This attitude is detrimental to the 3rd degree, mainstream organizations rarely respond to unprofessional business conduct. They don’t even accept unsolicited demo records, you have to funnel it through a producer, agent, shopper, manager or A&R rep to get some ears.

Talent defined as the ability, brilliance, flair or gift to perform is in contrast to the previous two characteristics excessively bubbling over. More importantly though is the fact that our talent is not confined to one or two specific genre like reggae or dancehall, it is widely varied. Now this might surprise several persons but believe it or not there are rappers locally that could give those seen on BET a run for their money literally, but like the other areas our local industry has failed us in upholding the view that there is no space for foreign syllables in our creative thoughts. Being a rapper in Jamaica is so tabooed that many of them deny any involvement with the art form when asked. This is as a result of our content, not wanting to leave our comfort zone and break the boundaries and categories of music. Just think if 5 years ago we had came across this 123 blueprint to growth how much U.S dollars would have been converted. I am in no way saying we should disown our cultural genre but god forbids we encourage and develop a profitable & marketable hybrid genre and make money. Damn.., whether or not it is our own. So many genres today took from reggae and became successful because is was mixed, fused, development and soon evolved into Hip Hop, Pop, Rock & Reggaeton. It’s our time to evolve; it’s been our time for a decade now so I cry shame on all who have let us down, all who have kept our industry seemingly stagnant for some years. Much to our ignorance “World Music” is upon us “I even got the World Charts to prove it” and whether or not we view it as a new genre it has fused genres of all liking and is far more feasible a market, the entire globe don’t you think ? $ 000,000.00
Consider this, if we decided to change our course and adapt to the current global climate by having a Vision, being professional in perusing that vision and using our talent as our “backAtive” we would see a greater increase in revenue, cause in the end “Big Man Ting” its all about the benjamin’s. Anyone who disputes this fact can start working for free like me, I don’t get paid to inspire you people but I do it anyway.

10th Anniversary, Reggae Sun Ska Festival

The festival has now became the unmissable reggae gathering of the summer.
A programme over two days of Reggae, World, Electro and Hip-Hop on an incredible location in the middle of the vines and under the sun. The festival features screenings, conferences and exhibitions... www.reggaesunska.com

The Reggae Sun Ska is celebrating its 10th anniversary! Considered as the oldest reggae festival in France, the Reggae Sun Ska has now become an international gathering. Its very eclectic programme, its incessant search for fresh artists that will become big tomorrow, and finally a real attachment to reggae music have transformed this event into an unmissable international rendez-vous.
SInce 2003, the festival welcomes its audience in Cissac-Medoc, right in the middle of a region hightly respected overseas for the quality of its wine.
The production team behind the festival is the French association Music'Action, which has programmed, booked, managed, initiated and given support to Live Music in France and in Europe for the last 12 years.
Amongst the five biggest Reggae festivals in Europe, the Reggae Sun Ska festival's exceptional ambiance is due to the persistence and resistance of its 300 volunteers which are involved at different levels, each year, and transform the event into their festival.

" We're touching at a very unique event which aims at a total inclusion of the local Medocan populations, all ages mixed. It's a very succesful challenge that symbolises the mixing of the Medoc region, very attached to its traditions, with a festival opened towards the world transporting values of reflexions and exchange."

Jesse, Brian, J, Korey and Roger continuously showcase their unique reggae, rock, soul and funky styling through their live shows, and now on the FM dial and music videos.

According to Punknews.com, "Reggae Hit L.A. is a dazzling album from start to finish. The Aggrolites have carved out their niche in the music community and planted their flag in a hybrid territory made up of some of the most soulful music around, and in doing so have crafted the perfect summer album." Reggae Hit L.A. debuted on Billboard’s Reggae Chart at #3 and is now at #11. They’re moving up the Alternative New Artist Chart from #66 to #50. The album was the #10 most added on the CMJ charts with 41 adds during the add week and charted for 7 weeks on the top 200, peaking at #85. It was also on the CMJ world chart for 3 weeks, peaking at #22.

Their first single "Free Time" is receiving regular airplay on two very influential alternative music stations - INDIE 103.1FM in Los Angeles and FM94/9 in San Diego - as well as numerous reggae specialty programs all over the U.S. It's quickly becoming the perfect summer hit track. And, now fans can find a video for "Free Time" on Aggroreggae.com, myspace.com/theaggrolites and Youtube.

The Aggrolites recently had the honor of headlining an LA Film Fest event that paid tribute to the late Joe Strummer with the showing of “The Future Is Unwritten.” Presented by INDIE 103.1, the band took to the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre stage to perform their Aggro versions of The Clash's classics "White Man from Hammersmith Palais" and "Know Your Rights." Is there a better band to pay such tribute!?!

Continuing their quest to broaden and strengthen their fan base, The Aggrolites return to the road in late July for a two month tour of North America (both headlining and supporting Dropkick Murphys) and Europe. They begin on July 21 at the prestigious Getty Center in Los Angeles, next a stop in their home town of Los Angeles at the Sunset Junction festival alongside Ben Harper, The O’Jays, Buzzcocks, and then off to Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival, joining the likes
of Sean Paul, Wu-Tang Clan and Panic! At The Disco.

It encompasses the music, energy and spirituality that define this unique and diverse community worldwide. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

The Reggae Festival Guide Magazine is an annual publication which comes out in May. RBA Publishing (also home of sister publication Blues Festival Guide) prints 100,000 copies of the magazine which spotlights festivals throughout the year, feature stories on festivals around the world, radio DJ listings and stories with messages of upliftment.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter.

The readership is now over 10,000 reggae fans and counting. Each week, The Reggae Festival E-Guide reaches members of the Reggae community around the world. The E-Guide is currently edited by Reggae Festival Guide's Marketing Director, Justine Ketola. Click here to email Justine.
