The Harder They Come Stage Production Returns

A Theatre Royal Stratford East and UK Arts Production: The Harder They Come at London's Barbican Theatre

Revival supported by barbicanbite08
Thursday 6 March – Saturday 5 April 2008

The Barbican gives London audiences another chance to catch the musical magic of The Harder They Come following two sell-out runs at Theatre Royal Stratford East last year and in 2006. Following the Barbican run The Harder They Come visits Birmingham Hippodrome (Friday 11 – Sunday 13 April).

The Harder They Come is based on the groundbreaking 1972 eponymous film that starred Jimmy Cliff and introduced reggae to a worldwide audience. Young singer Ivan Martin heads to Kingston with dreams of becoming a reggae star, but the harsh reality of the Jamaican music scene drives him to a fast and furious life as an outlaw.

The cast, including Rolan Bell and Joanna Francis, both of whom performed in the 2006 and 2007 stagings, perform all the classic songs from the film soundtrack including You Can Get It If You Really Want and By The Rivers of Babylon, accompanied by a live reggae band. Written by the late Perry Henzell, co-writer, director and producer of the original film, The Harder They Come is a high-energy production that marks a defining moment in Jamaican culture.

The Harder They Come is directed by Kerry Michael and Dawn Reid. Design is by Ultz and choreography is by Jackie Guy.

To complement the stage production, Barbican Film presents Film Jamaica (Wednesday 12 – Sunday 30 March), a season of Jamaican cinema celebrating the island’s rich musical heritage. Film Producer Justine Henzell, daughter of Perry Henzell who died in 2006, introduces the opening screening of the original film version of The Harder They Come on Wednesday 12 March at 8.30pm.

In addition dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson (otherwise known as LKJ) performs in the Barbican Hall on Sunday 9 March at 7.30pm. Sharing the stage with Dennis Bovell’s Dub Band, Winston Francis, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze and Shirley Thompson, LKJ heads up a night that combines powerful words and deep reggae grooves.

Singer Ali Campbell splits with pop-reggae band UB40 after almost 30 years

Singer Ali Campbell said Friday he has quit pop-reggae band UB40 after almost 30 years, citing management problems.

His bandmates, however, said Campbell had left to pursue solo projects. In a statement on his website, Campbell said that "management difficulties, which have been ongoing for almost five years, had become intolerable."

"No words can express how upset I feel today that I have been forced to make this decision," he wrote.

UB40 was founded in Birmingham, central England, and fused reggae and pop to popular effect, notably on hit versions of "Red Red Wine," "I Got You Babe" and "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You."

The band was named after Unemployment Benefit Form 40, the government document used by welfare claimants.

Campbell, 48, said the band, which includes his brother Robin, would continue without him.

In a separate statement, UB40 said Campbell "has taken the decision to focus on his solo career and in doing so, could not give his full commitment to UB40."

"The other band members of UB40 are naturally disappointed and saddened after being together as a band unit and as good friends for almost 30 years," it added.

The band's forthcoming album "24/7," which was recorded with Campbell, will be released as planned in May.

Organic foods: Are They Safer? More Nutritious?

Learn the difference between organic foods and their traditionally grown counterparts. Decide which is best for you, considering nutrition, quality, taste, cost and other factors.

You're in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one hand, you're holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one that's been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.

The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a label that says "USDA Organic." Does that mean it is better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences between organic and nonorganic foods exist. Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket.

Conventional vs. Organic Farming

The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce and meat do not use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock disease. For example, rather than using chemical weedkillers, organic farmers conduct sophisticated crop rotations and spread mulch or manure to keep weeds at bay.

Here are other differences between conventional farming and organic farming:
Conventional farmers
Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.
Spray insecticides to reduce pests and disease.
Use chemical herbicides to manage weeds.
Give animals antibiotics, growth hormones and medications to prevent disease and spur growth.

Organic farmers
Apply natural fertilizers, such as manure or compost, to feed soil and plants.
Use beneficial insects and birds, mating disruption or traps to reduce pests and disease.
Rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds.
Give animals organic feed and allow them access to the outdoors.
Use preventive measures such as rotational grazing, a balanced diet and clean housing to help minimize disease.

Next week read about organic labeling and how to be sure.

Until then,

Amy Winehouse is Heading to Jamaica to Channel the Spirit of Bob Marley Into Her Music

24-year-old singer Amy Winehouse is a huge fan of the late reggae legend Bob Marley and is travelling to his home country to work with his Grammy-winning son Damian Marley on the follow-up to her critically acclaimed BACK TO BLACK LP.

She was overheard telling her friends in her favorite north London pub that she loves Jamaica and wants to feel Bob Marley's spirit in her music.

Amy is looking forward to the music-making holiday on the sun-drenched Caribbean island.

A source said that she wants to escape all her troubles back home for a bit and just throw herself into her music. She's always loved the Marleys and she wants her next album to have a reggae feel about it.

Amy has already dabbled in the laid-back Rastafarian sound. She performed Toots And The Maytals' reggae classic Monkey Man at last year's Glastonbury music festival.
