Martin Scorsese to Make Bob Marley Documentary
|
Filmmaker Martin Scorsese (pictured with The Rolling Stones) is lining up another documentary about a music legend - the Oscar winner has announced plans to make a movie about Bob Marley.
Scorsese has previously explored the '60s heyday of Bob Dylan's career in "No Direction Home" and his new Rolling Stones concert film "Shine A Light" premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany on Thursday, February 7,2008.
Now the director has signed up to shoot a documentary on reggae legend Marley, who died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.
Marley's son Ziggy Marley will act as executive producer on the currently-untitled film, which is set for release on February 6, 2010, the 65th anniversary of the star's birth.
Ziggy Marley appeared on the NAACP Image Awards on Thursday, February 14th with Angelique Kidjo. The duo performed their song "Sedjedo" from Kidjo's Grammy Award-winning album Djin Djin which one in the Contemporary World Music category.
Singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo won her first Grammy on February 10th after receiving five nominations over the years. She dedicated her award to her parents in Benin, to the African continent, to "the women of Darfur, the women who are fighting every day to give their kids an education," and to late Billboard editor Timothy White, whom she said encouraged her from the earliest days of her stateside career. With the Grammy win, "I really believe I can do anything," said Kidjo, who starts a U.S. and European tour at the end of February.

Organic - To Buy Or Bypass?

Many factors may influence your decision to buy, or not buy, organic food.
Consider these factors:
Nutrition. No conclusive evidence shows that organic food is more nutritious than is conventionally grown food. And the USDA, even though it certifies organic food, doesn't claim that these products are safer or more nutritious.
Quality and appearance. Organic foods meet the same quality and safety standards as conventional foods. The difference lies in how the food is produced, processed and handled. You may find that organic fruits and vegetables spoil faster because they aren't treated with waxes or preservatives. Also, expect less-than-perfect appearances in some organic produce - odd shapes, varying colors and perhaps smaller sizes. In most cases, however, organic foods look identical to their conventional counterparts.
Pesticides. Conventional growers use pesticides to protect their crops from molds, insects and diseases. When farmers spray pesticides, this can leave residue on produce. Some people buy organic food to limit their exposure to these residues. Most experts agree, however, that the amount of pesticides found on fruits and vegetables poses a very small health risk.
Environment. Some people buy organic food for environmental reasons. Organic farming practices are designed to benefit the environment by reducing pollution and conserving water and soil.
Cost. Most organic food costs more than conventional food products. Higher prices are due to more expensive farming practices, tighter government regulations and lower crop yields. Because organic farmers don't use herbicides or pesticides, many management tools that control weeds and pests are labor intensive. For example, organic growers may hand weed vegetables to control weeds, and you may end up paying more for these vegetables.
Taste. Some people say they can taste the difference between organic and nonorganic food. Others say they find no difference. Taste is a subjective and personal consideration, so decide for yourself. But whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest impact on taste.

Alpha Blondy Battling Pneumonia and Malaria, Calls Off North American Tour

From the Desk of Michel Jovanovic of Mediacom on behalf of Alpha Blondy, written to the attention of promoters, one of which told Reggae Festival E-Guide that he was informed that Alpha Blondy was also facing a battle with malaria which can recur once the person contracts it.
Dear Promoters,
Some unfortunate circumstances have transpired with Alpha's U.S. tour. We have to announce that Alpha Blondy has to cancel his North American tour after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia, chest pains and spots on his lungs amongst other medical findings. At the start of the tour Alpha had expressed how bad he was feeling. The first show was in Honolulu on Friday, February 8th. Alpha had to cut the show a little short and profusely apologized to the audience telling them he was feeling very ill. The next day when Alpha awoke he was in such a bad state that he had to be taken to the hospital. After being seen by the hospital doctor and taking some preliminary tests he had to be admitted to a hospital stay for further testing and kept under observation. He had to cancel his peformance that Saturday evening and on Sunday. The doctors had released him on Monday telling him he should confine himself to bed rest for several days before starting to perform again. He had a show Monday evening and was able to move that to a later date on the tour. Alpha insisted on doing the show on Tuesday in Aspen (at the Belly Up) which he did although it was a shorter set. It was a great show, typical for Alpha giving us all hope that he was past his illness. When he awoke the next morning, the symptoms that hospitalized him on Saturday had returned in a severe way. He gave it until the afternoon in hopes of feeling better but unfortunately that did not happen. The decision was made for his well being to immediately return to France where his own doctors can treat his severe medical issues.
Alpha had these words for his fans:
"To my fans in America. I am so sorry to have to do this to you as I greatly value your appreciation for my music and the message it carries. I would not leave you like this if it was not serious. I plan on returning to America as soon as possible to perform some music for you and show you how truly blessed I am to have such understanding people as fans."

Link Up Launches the Power Link Simulcast with 106 FM in Jamaica
|
LinkUp Media Inc. - The New York based, 11-year-old Caribbean-American media company makes another move to expand "Jamaican Radio" programming by joining forces with Power 106 FM in Jamaica and creating "Power Link."
The Power Link is a simulcast of "Perkins online," Jamaica's longest running talk show teaming up with LinkUp Radio's broadcaster David "Squeeze" Annakie at 12:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays in New York on LinkUp Radio 93.5FM. Listeners in New York can now ask questions, share comments and give suggestions as to what is happening in Jamaica on a global perspective. The show was brokered by Charles Spence General Manager of Sales and Marketing, N.A. JN Money Transfer in the USA. JN Money Transfer is the official sponsor of the show.
About the Host Wilmot Mutty Perkins:
Perkins is the longest serving Talk Show Host on Jamaican radio, having hosted his first program "What's your Grouse" on RJR in 1960. He had a short break from the airwaves a few years later, during which he went into farming. Motty returned to radio in the 70s, as host of JBC's popular call-in programme "Public Eye." He later hosted "Hot Line" on JBC and then "Straight Talk" on KLAS FM, before hosting "Perkins On Line" on Hot 102FM.
Perkins came to POWER106 in April 2002, with his probing interviews and keen analyses of pertinent matters which continue to make for compulsive listening. Perkins on Line' is spirited interaction with callers on a wide range of topics. It is described by many as "The Poor Man's University." A typical caller will often attribute his or her widening knowledge of events happening in and outside of Jamaica to the information garnered from just listening to these broadcasts.
Host, Wilmot "Motty" Perkins says the underlying intent of the program is to, "focus public attention on the gaping hiatus between what is and what might be, and to do it within a broad framework that embraces not only the history of Jamaica, but the history of mankind."
There are some who often disagree with his point of view on issues. However, Motty revels in controversy and these calls add spice. Given the stated intent of the program, Motty says ''if people really think about it, they might discover that 'Perkins on Line ' is more profoundly positive than negative." That's why it is called the "Thinking Persons' Call-In Show".

The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the music, energy and spirituality that define this unique and diverse community worldwide. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.
The Reggae Festival Guide Magazine is an annual publication which comes out in May. RBA Publishing (also home of sister publication Blues Festival Guide) prints 100,000 copies of the magazine which spotlights festivals throughout the year, feature stories on festivals around the world, radio DJ listings and stories with messages of upliftment.
For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter.
The readership is now over 10,000 reggae fans and counting. Each week, The Reggae Festival E-Guide reaches members of the Reggae community around the world.
