E-GUIDE DEH PON DE ROAD
Greetings Reggae Festival E-Guide Massive,

It's Justine, your fearless editor, back from a whirlwind few weeks of work on the reggae festival scene. With stops in Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco and a few additional stops to check out Rootz Underground in Sacramento with Gregory Isaacs at Harlows and Rootz again with Midnite in Petaluma at the Mystic Theatre, I am feeling the California love. When it comes to the essence of reggae music and the oneness and healing that it promotes, we realize that many of you are reading this from around the world, and with this in mind we welcome you to submit your festival stories and advance press to help spread the message of reggae throughout our diaspora.

I'm pictured here in the first a shot courtesy of Belizeanvibez.com with MC Amlak Tafari who also serves as bassist for Steel Pulse.

Although there were numerous great peformances including those from Rootz Underground, Midnite, Beenie Man, Anthony B, The Aggrolites and Gregory Isaacs along with his band Live Wyya, we spotlight a few below from the newcomers to the California festival scene along with some backstage moments.

Long Beach Arena could not hold the vibes down as they reached the heights from the first notes of Soul Majestic, whose bio diesel van broke down in Fresno on the way down from their native Santa Cruz. Lead singer Eric Iverson paid tribute to his father Ron who helped them along the route in the wee hours before their 2pm hit time in Long Beach

Collie Budz gave a great performance in Long Beach with the New Kingston Band, a classic Jamaican backing group whose chops helped Collie Budz create a fine impression on the fans in Long Beach. He is seen here with Bryan Jarvis from Soul Majestic with horn player Balboa in the background.

Queen Ifrica made her debut appearance both in Long Beach and at the Tribute To The Legends sister festival at the San Diego Sports Arena. She performed with Sly and Robbie (as did Dancehall Soul Sistren Cherine Anderson) and is seen here with Ragga Muffins festival promoter/founder and radio personality Barbara Barabino on a live remote broadcast from Long Beach for radio statio KDAY, Los Angeles.

Capleton performed two shows on the four city festival tour bringing the steady stream of hits ~ creating a luminous environment with his demands for more lighters throughout the arena. The Prophet as he is known is seen here giving an interview with Siah Nix from M 995.com/KMRJ Rancho Mirage radio at the San Diego Sports Arena on Monday, February 18th.

With maximum respect and honor to the ladies, Tarrus Riley sings along with his musical director, the legendary saxophonist Dean Fraser and the Daffodils inside Long Beach Arena who welcomed his hit song "She's Royal" with cheers and chimed in on it's chorus.

The only downside to the northern portion of the festival tour was that in addition to the cancellation of Alpha Blondy due to his previously reported bout with pneumonia, Barrington Levy who appeared in San Diego, was forced to cancel his San Francisco appearance after sustaining an injury to his hand. And Gentleman, making his first Ragga Muffins festival appearance, came down with strep throat and had to cancel his San Francisco appearance after the previous night's performance at Ragga Muffins/Santa Cruz Dayz. Eek-A-Mouse closed the show in San Francisco to take the place of these fallen soldiers! We wish you all a healthy and happy remainder to your festival season!

JOE GIBBS, ONE OF JAMAICA'S TOP RECORD PRODUCERS PASSES ON TO ZION
One of Jamaica's top record producers in the 1970's, Joe Gibbs, is dead at 65.

Mr. Gibbs died at the University Hospital of the West Indies, in Kingston after suffering a heart attack.

He started his music career as a technician but made history in the Jamaican music industry with the production of several popular songs.

Under his belt were songs by the likes of Beres Hammond, J C Lodge and Dennis Brown.

In the seventies, Joe Gibbs was one of the biggest and best producers because he had a particular sound and that sound permeated throughout the whole music fraternity in those days and his influence is here.

He was the producer responsible for Culture’s Two Sevens Clash,
Althea & Donna’s Uptown Top Ranking, Trinity’s Three Piece Suit, and Dennis Brown’s Money In My Pocket.

Gibbs left an indelible mark on reggae music
and his hits are staples at reggae dances to this day.

HAPPY FEBRUARY 29, 2008 - LEAP YEAR - WHAT IS IT?
Leap years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the sun. A leap year is a year in which one extra day has been inserted, or
intercalated, at the end of February. A leap year consists of 366 days,
whereas other years, called common years, have 365 days.

If you look at a 2008 calendar, you will see that February has five Fridays – the month begins and ends on a Friday. Between the years 1904 and 2096, leap years that share the same day of week for each date repeat only every 28 years. The most recent year in which February comprised five Fridays was in 1980, and the next occurrence will be in 2036. February 29, the leap day, has been associated with age-old traditions, superstitions and folklore.

For example, we all know that traditionally in America, the man asks the woman for her hand in marriage and the woman accepts or rejects, right? Yes, this is changing some in recent years, but it is the standard old tradition. Well, rumor has it that on February 29th of a leap year it is perfectly acceptable and even expected that the lady can ask the gentleman for his hand in marriage instead.

The vernal equinox is the time when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator, moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere.

The mean time between two successive vernal equinoxes is called a tropical year–also known as a solar year–and is about 365.2422 days long.

Using a calendar with 365 days every year would result in a loss of 0.2422 days, or almost six hours per year. After 100 years, this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the season (tropical year), which is not desirable or accurate. It is desirable to align the calendar with the seasons and to make any difference as insignificant as possible.

By adding a leap year approximately every fourth year, the difference between the calendar and the seasons can be reduced significantly, and the calendar will align with the seasons much more
accurately.

(The term "day" is used to mean "solar day"–which is the mean time between two transits of the sun across the meridian of the observer.)

In ancient times, it was customary to have lunar (moon) calendars, with 12 and/or 13 months every year. To align the calendar with the seasons, the 13th month was inserted as a "leap month" every two or three years. Many countries, especially in Asia still use such calendars.

FROM CHEF MAYRA'S KITCHEN
Greetings from Carib Chef Mayra!

Please enjoy my recipe for Maple Barbecued Chicken Drumsticks.

It's always the perfect time to fire up the grill!

Makes 6 servings
Ingredients:
1/2 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup maple syrup
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 tablespoons sunflower or canola oil
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
12 ORGANIC chicken drumsticks (about 3 pounds)
Preparation:
Bring first 7 ingredients to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Reduce heat, and simmer, stirring often, 6 minutes. Remove 1/4 cup chili sauce mixture, and brush evenly on chicken drumsticks. Reserve remaining chili sauce mixture for basting.

Prepare a hot fire by piling charcoal on one side of grill, leaving other side empty. (For gas grills, light only one side, heating to 400° to 500°.) Arrange chicken drumsticks on food grate on unlit side.

Grill drumsticks, covered with grill lid, 1 hour or until chicken is done, turning drumsticks once and basting with remaining chili sauce mixture every 15 minutes.

Note: Chili sauce mixture may be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container up to 3 days. Maple Barbecued Organic Chicken Breasts: Substitute 4 bone-in Orgnic chicken breasts (about 3 pounds) for drumsticks. Proceed as directed.

Marjoram Shallot Butter
Category: Spread
Ingredients:
1 cup and 1 tablespoon (2 sticks and 1 tablespoon) un salted butter, room temperature, divided
1/4 cup finely diced shallots
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons dry vermouth (or dry white wine)
2 tablespoons fresh sweet marjoram, finely chopped
(or 2 teaspoons dried) (see note)
1/8 teaspoon finely ground white pepper

Preparation:
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the shallots and season with a pinch of salt. Sauté until soft, but do not brown. Add the vermouth, and simmer until the pan is almost dry. Set aside to cool completely.

Place the butter in a medium mixing bowl and, with an electric mixer (fitted with the paddle) or wooden spoon, beat until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides.
Add the marjoram and pepper, and beat to incorporate, scraping down the sides. Add the cooled shallot mixture and beat to combine. Taste for salt and pepper.

Scrape into a small bowl, serving crock or butter molds and cover tightly; or shape into a long roll in grease-proof paper (plastic, wax or parchment) for storing and slicing as needed.

Serving Notes:
Serve this herb-flecked butter on everything from mashed potatoes to dinner rolls. It’s also wonderful for rubbing under the skin of turkey and chicken.

Note: Shop for fresh marjoram in the herb section of the produce department; dried will be with the spice jars.

Enjoy!

YOGOMAN BURNING BAND : : Self-Titled EP

Yogoman Burning Band’s debut album is a triumphant return to form for
upbeat dance music. Led by Jordan Rain (Yogoman), the Burning Band’s six members recall the melodies and dynamics of classic soul, R&B, and reggae eras while combining the attitude and beat of current dancehall and New Orleans hits. This unlikely combination of influences is filtered through the one-of-a-kind Belligham, WA community spirit, and topped off with Jordan’s unique vocalizations for the not-to-be-missed, Yogoman Burning Band sound.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN JAMAICA

Greetings,

I would like to invite human rights-interested Reggae Festival Guide people to look into the Jamaica page that's been updated at Amnesty International USA.

Check it at www.amnestyusa.org/Jamaica/More_information_on_Jamaica

It's a 4000-word overview of the human rights issues facing Jamaica.

Please note, too, that there will be a new major report on public security in Jamaica issued by AIUSA in March 2008. It will be accompanied by an online video concerning gun violence and human rights in Jamaica based on the new report and interviews conducted in October 2007 in several of the marginalized communities of Kingston. The human rights imperatives remain urgent for this beautiful and beleaguered nation. The per-capita rate of murder has been among the highest in the world for several years, to name but one factor.

As a volunteer country specialist for AIUSA, I had the privilege of conducting interviews in that October 2007 trip, which took the AI-Caribbean team to Angola, Jonestown, Majesty Gardens, Trench Town, Waterhouse, Mountain View and other localities that have been riven by gang violence, extrajudicial police killings, political tribalism and other problems associated with poverty and violence. We talked to community organizers, ordinary folks and a few reggae artist-activists about their experiences and observations of gun violence.

Though it will be relatively short, the video will be made available online to see along with the AIUSA report on Jamaica and the attendant campaign.

In the meantime, check AIUSA's stuff on Jamaica and the wider
Caribbean;there's some pretty pressing stuff going on in Haiti right about now.

In the JA overview, I wanted not only to highlight AIUSA but the non-governmental organizations based in Jamaica that are doing the heavy lifting to improve human rights there, such as the Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights (IJCHR) and Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ). Bigup, too, to Peace Management Initiative (PMI) for the outreach and development they're doing in Kingston. Everywhere I went in Kingston, people were biggin' up PMI.

Stand up,
Michael Kuelker
