Jahworks Reasonings
|
by Laura Gardner
There’s this great term in the islands that doesn’t seem to have a North American translation. It’s the concept of reasoning – to reason. Close synonyms might be to discuss, or to converse, but that doesn’t come close to capturing the essence of this verb. Reasoning is about community, about big ideas, about new perspectives, about sharing. It’s about having unstructured time – time to think and time to gather together. It’s about growing oneself and connecting with others; AND it happens to be one of my favorite activities, which is why I am so excited about this new column.
These words are a chance for me to wax poetic on whatever is on my mind, and although it’s not quite a two-way dialogue, I encourage you to post your thoughts and responses on the Jahworks.org website. Everything is open for discussion from dancehall to tourism, sex to politics, religion to racism, and psychology to medicine. My hope is that my words will in some way impact you and will spark discussion in your own communities.
This week I am particularly interested in talking about the lure of being close to fame. Turn on the news and you see paparazzi running after celebrities; in magazines you see the play-by-play: J. Lo is in her sweats walking down the street, in the adjunct photo she’s crossing the street, then she’s entering Starbucks, and in the last frame she’s coming out with a coffee. What is the fascination?!
Having been in the reggae industry nearly ten years, I’ve seen some interesting things backstage. I admit that even at times, I’ve been tongue-tied around my favorite artists. And this is what I make of it - I believe a number of things are at play. First, we live in a culture of celebrity worship and if these celebrities have status and power, then our closeness to them by association gives us so-called importance. But more importantly, we are attracted to things we think we are not. We ascribe traits that we have disowned to celebrities (as well as other ‘regular folks,’ although the celebrity has much more exposure) – whether these traits are positive or negative. Celebrities may appear confident, beautiful, talented, risk-taking, daring, virtuous, disciplined, intelligent, aggressive, addicted, extroverted, secure, irreverent, hilarious, a train wreck, evolved, moralistic, quick tempered, patient, etc. Personally, what I’ve always admired is the confidence that these artists have and their ability to get in front of huge audiences and perform. I’ve never been particularly confident myself and I am much more comfortable behind the scenes than in front of large groups. Yet the catch of this is that we all have the potential for ALL of these traits.
Sadly, from an article at the end of 2007, it is estimated that clinically one in four people become so obsessed with a celebrity, it affects their daily life. One of the explanations that’s been put forth is that worshipping a celebrity is a substitute for a conventional relationship. Many people become obsessed with somebody famous at a time when they are looking for direction in life, such as in their teenage years. Which brings me back to my initial point – we need human and real relationships. We need unstructured time to spend with others and connect, so turn off the computer and go find some folks to reason with!

REGGAE’S BIGGEST NAMES SALUTE BRITISH SUPERGROUP THE POLICE ON ALBUM
|
Some of reggae and pop music's biggest names have saluted British supergroup The Police on the album, Spirits In The Material World: A Reggae Tribute to The Police.
The album was released in the United States on February 19, by New York's Shanachie Records.
Most of the 12-track disc was produced by reggae band Inner Circle at its Circle House studio in Miami. The Spirit's crew includes old school reggae acts like the Wailing Souls and Gregory Isaacs, as well as new wave roots performer Tarrus Riley.
Former UB40 singer Ali Campbell, and American singers Joan Osborne and Cyrille Neville (of the Neville Brothers) also appear on the set which was conceived last April by Shanachie Records General Manager Randall Grass.
It is the second reggae tribute to the three-piece band which was arguably the biggest international act of the early 1980s. Grass told The Gleaner that the Shanachie set is different from the two-volume Reggatta Mondatta: A Reggae Tribute to the Police, released a decade ago by Ark 21 Records.
Those had licensed tracks, these songs were all done from the ground up, Grass said.
Junior Reid, who is also enjoying a career renaissance, covers Synchronicity while the Souls contribute One World. Isaacs puts his spin on So Lonely while Tarrus Riley did a version of King of Pain, taken from the groups massive 1983 Synchronicity album. Inner Circle recorded The Beds Too Big Without You.
Grass said he came up with the idea for a Police tribute shortly after Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers reunited for the 2007 Grammy Awards.
They always had a reggae element to their songs, he said.
Founded in 1976, Shanachie Records has a vast catalogue of folk and Gaelic music. Their roster also includes some of the most influential reggae albums of the 1970s, including Two Sevens Clash by Culture and Visions by Dennis Brown.

FROM CHEF MAYRA - THE POWER OF THE GREEN SMOOTHIE
|
Fruit and, especially, vegetable juices are a source of easily absorbed vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, water and enzymes, and can boost energy, health and weight loss.
It’s what you drink in the morning instead of coffee; at a party instead of alcoholic drinks; at lunch instead of soda or pop. Yet in its own right, juicing is a simple, tasty way to boost your health and energy, get vitamins and minerals missing from your diet, improve digestion, lose weight and get your daily servings of fruit and vegetables.
What exactly is a green smoothie? It's a fruit smoothie that includes a big serving of dark green leafy vegetables.
Green smoothies are an excellent breakfast choice for many, as they provide healthy carbohydrates, along with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and chlorophyll. Green smoothies are also an excellent source of fiber.
When making green smoothies, it is best to use slightly more vegetables than fruits. In general, we strive to make our green smoothies 60 percent greens and 40 percent fruits.
Our favorite greens to use in green smoothies are romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, and Swiss chard.
Our favorite fruits to use in green smoothies are bananas, pears, apples, blueberries, mangos, papayas, and pineapples.
If you don't have any problems digesting fruits and vegetables, you can mix and match any combination of the vegetables and fruits listed above. If you have a sensitive digestive tract, it is best to combine only one vegetable and one fruit at a time.
Directions: Not only are green smoothies really good for your health, they are extremely simple to make.
Put green vegetables and fruits into a good blender and add just enough water to allow the blender to bring vegetables and fruits together into a smoothie-like consistency.
Enjoy the health benefits of green smoothies!
