CG Flooring Systems Completes Major Fast-Track Floor Upgrade
CG Flooring Systems (CGFS) has successfully completed its biggest and most demanding project upgrading the 6000m² floor of an iron foundry to narrow-aisle warehouse standard suitable for racking up to 12 metres high in less than six weeks.
As part of a major re-organisation of its manufacturing operations, the Baxi Group decided to close the cast iron foundry at its plant near Preston, Lancashire, and use most of the building as its central warehouse. The company is a leading European manufacturer of space and water heating products.
Following removal of the foundry equipment a detailed floor survey revealed several major challenges, including seven large pits up to 3 metres deep, a number of vertical steel columns, horizontal I-beams and steel bolts within the floor, damaged expansion joints, and low and high areas spread throughout the building.
All columns, beams and bolts were removed, and around 150 linear metres of expansion joints were repaired. The seven pits, totaling nearly 500m² in surface area, were filled with consolidated hardcore, and then covered with a waterproof membrane and mesh reinforcement. The edges of the pits were cut to provide clean, vertical surfaces, and then approximately 1000 600mm long dowel bars were inserted in the walls to provide a load transfer mechanism to support the new floor. Nearly 100m³ of concrete were poured in five hours to bring the pits up to floor level.
Elsewhere in the building a base screed was used to build low areas up to floor level, while high areas were scabbled to lower them. The entire floor area was then shot-blasted to provide a positive key for the wearing surface.
The wearing surface selected by CGFS consisted of a nominal 10mm-thick pumped cementitious screed and was completed in five days. Once this had cured, all existing floor joints were transferred through and sealed with a specialised filler in order to reduce the potential for cracking caused by substrate movement. Finally, a clear acrylic seal was applied to the entire surface.

CoGri Group Operations in Asia
When Concrete Grinding Ltd was invited by Ciba Geigy, Singapore, to resolve a flooring problem it could not have been imagined that it would lead to major business ventures in Asia.
It is now 15 years since the paths of Kevin Dare, Managing Director of the CoGri Group, and Colin Thoms, Managing Director of Bequia Group, crossed during this project and resulting from this encounter, a strong partnership evolved between Kevin and Colin.
Concrete Grinding Asia Pacific was incorporated in Singapore in 1994.
In the following 6 to 7 years the company became a driving force in promoting flat floor technology in Asia. Also during this period a second company Laser Grinder Asia, Jersey (now known as LGA) was set up to facilitate the regional work following the success of contracts in China, Philippines, Malaysia and Korea.
In 2000 Concrete Grinding in Asia diversified its portfolio from consulting, testing and remedying floors to include the construction of high tolerance flat floors when the first truly superflat floor in Asia was laid at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Singapore.
By 2004, the North Asian market was blooming and covering the market through agents and joint ventures was not enough. By 2006 this led to incorporating LGA Logis and giving a solid base in North Asia.
Today, Concrete Grinding Asia Pacific, LGA and LGA Logis offer a comprehensive package of Global Flooring Solutions throughout Asia, either from major bases in Singapore and Seoul or from local bases located with associated companies. All three companies are joint venture companies of the CoGri Group and Bequia Group of companies.
Colin is a UK Chartered Civil Engineer and holds the status of Professional Engineer in Singapore. Colin started his career with Sir Robert McAlpine in 1974. He worked with them in Scotland and Barbados before leaving them in 1984 to work in Nassau, Bahamas.
In 1987, Colin was drawn to Asia where he worked for six years before starting Fastrack Projects, his own Design & Build Company.
Since 1993 Colin has built up a diversified group of companies in Asia under the banner of his holding company Bequia. Fastrack is wholly owned by Bequia and is currently providing Design and Construction management services in Singapore and China. Bequia also has a major stake in the Fast Flow group of companies with offices throughout Asia and Australia.

LGA Logis Completes Casting To 30,000 m� Multi Storey Warehouse Floor
LGA Logis Co. Ltd (LGAK), the CoGri Group company in South Korea has just completed the casting of a 30,000 m2 concrete floor to a multi-storey warehouse for ‘Nong Shim’ – a major Food Manufacturer in Korea.
The 2nd and 3rd floors were designed as Composite Slabs (Deckplate) with permanent steel decking.
In order to expedite the construction, the main contractor had no choice but to cast the floor, without a roof, in temperatures of up to 35oC – not recommended for a high quality direct concrete finished floor.
LGAK suggested the addition of Polypropylene Microfibres to reduce the risk of ‘Plastic Shrinkage’ cracking, which the client accepted.
The 2nd and 3rd floors were cast with the LGAK ‘Copperhead’ Laser Screed and the finished floor was surprisingly crack free.
The 11,000 m2 first floor was designed as a Bonded Topping slab with Steel Fibres and a Dry Shake Topping. The floor was constructed in November with the LGAK S-240 Laser Screed and the new CoGri Group STS-130 Topping Spreader, with daily casting areas of up to 2,000 m2.
Sample areas of the first floor were tested by Face Consultants (FACE) Korea in accordance with the clients instructions and the floor passed the TR-34 ‘FM2 Special’ specification with 99% of the floor passing FM1.
Although CoGri Group has been carrying out projects in South Korea since 1996, when FACE supervised construction of a Superflat Floor for 3M, 2007 was the first full year of trading for LGAK and has proved to be a success.
With a core team of staff and all the major equipment required now in place, LGAK is anticipating a good year in 2008 with many major projects such as ‘Nong Shim’.

Concrete Grinding Update
Concrete Grinding Ltd (CG) is off to a flying start for 2008 with Laser Grinding projects in the UK, Spain, Germany, Greece and the Middle East.
In the Middle East, CG is working on a warehouse conversion project for a multi disciplined company.
The fully operational warehouse is undergoing transformation from a wide aisle double deep racking system to a VNA operation.
CG has been assigned to carry out floor joint repairs and 3 wheel track grinding along all of the 28 aisles, at approximately 120 linear metres per aisle (totalling 3,120m).
The project is programmed into 4 phases. Phases 1 to 3 involve grinding 6 aisles to compliance with the Appendix C DM, which will be followed by the installation of the wire guidance system. The same work will be done in the final phase consisting of the remaining 8 aisles.
Phase 1 was completed in February with phase 2 due to start early March.
In Germany CG has started this year as they finished the last one by completing several contracts already and the busy predicted workload looks set to continue. So much so that CG now keeps a Laser Grinder® out in Germany on a permanent basis.
As in Germany, CG has successfully completed several projects so far this year in Spain. One in Madrid was a second phase revisit to complete a contract started last year and another was a job in Seville for a client requiring a bespoke grinding format.
In addition to all of this, CG has also been busy with joint repair work both abroad and here in the UK. Their good reputation and excellent workmanship has helped to secure joint repair work with both existing and new clients.

Renewal of the Concrete Grinding and the CG Flooring Systems vans provided the opportunity for the CoGri Group to update vehicle livery designs.
The designs are dynamic and eye catching and we hope this will help to promote the services of the Group.

Face Consultants Update
Face Consultants Ltd (FACE) are the only independent UKAS accredited testing organisation and are specialists in the measurement and control of floor profiles.
FACE are involved in over 5 million square metres of warehouse flooring every year - from design, supervision, testing, due diligence, construction, repair and upgrading.
This year, FACE has already carried out 113,331 m2 of free movement surveys 10,010 m2 of bespoke level surveys and 7493 Linear metres of Profileograph Surveys.

New Appointments
The CoGri Group welcomes three new recruits, Andrew Beevers, Samantha Bowskill and David Crookes.
Andrew joins as the new Health & Safety and Training Officer for the CoGri Group. After working in the printing industry for over thirty years, Andrew developed his interest in safety and thus qualified as a Health and Safety Practitioner in 2005. Andrew has delivered various training programmes in the past and has safety experience in the student housing sector, media and journalism.
Samantha joins CG Flooring Systems Ltd (CGFS) as an Estimator. She will be working closely with the CGFS team, producing quotations, project costing, which includes occasional site visits.
Samantha previously worked at Ryder Levitt Bucknall as a Building Consultant. Previous experience includes external cladding, bricks and masonry. She is due to complete her HNC in Building Studies at the Sheffield Hallam University in April 2008.
David joins Concrete Grinding Ltd as an Electronic Engineering Assistant. Working predominantly with Robert Stockdale, David will assist in the building and servicing of the digital equipment, as well as the construction and development of the Laser Grinder®.
David has a broad range of experience in production engineering and was an independent electronics consultant. He has been an apprentice trained radio and radar engineer with the RAF. David is a communications engineer by trade.

Construct-A-Slab at the Sheds Show
Construct-A-Slab (CAS) exhibited at the Sheds Show 2008, which took place on the 6th & 7th February, at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales.
Representatives from the four alliances were on hand to promote the CAS brand and its principles of best practice in the construction of industrial floors.
The event included networking opportunities, seminars and key issues affecting the industry. Kevin Dare, Managing Director of Face Consultants Ltd (FACE), was at the show, promoting FACE services and products, as well as raising awareness of the CoGri Group of companies.
