CEDELLA BOOKER, THE MOTHER OF JAMAICAN MUSIC LEGEND BOB MARLEY PASSES
|
Cedella Booker, mother of pop icon Bob Marley and matriarch of reggae's most famous family, died at her Miami home on Tuesday evening. She was 81 years old.
Jerome Hamilton, a spokesperson for the Marleys, told The Gleaner that Booker passed away in her sleep. No cause of death has been given.
Booker was a popular figure in the South Florida area she called home for more than 30 years. Since 1993 she was integrally involved in promotion of the annual Bob Marley Movement Festival there, which raised funds to buy food for the indigent.
The live show attracted major stars including Carlos Santana and Wyclef Jean.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding paid tribute to Booker, saying she was a star in her own right. "Her life was one of hardship, struggle and fulfilment and through it all she exuded hope, strength and confidence."
Information Minister Olivia Grange described Booker as a 'true heroine'.
Booker, who is survived by two of her four children, last visited Jamaica in February for the annual celebrations marking Bob Marley's birthday. A thanksgiving service for her life will be held in Miami on Sunday, a statement from the Marley family said.
Cedella Malcolm was born in Rhoden Hall, St Ann. At 18, she gave birth to her first child Robert Nesta Marley; his father was Norval Marley, an Englishman 35 years her senior.
Shortly after Norval Marley died in 1955, Cedella moved with Bob to Kingston. She lived in Trench Town, then an expansive slum bursting with musical talent.
Marley achieved relative success with The Wailers group in the early 1960s. During that period, Booker married an American and immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s, settling in Delaware.
After Marley's death from cancer in May 1981, Booker launched her own musical career, recording two albums: "Awake Zion" and "Smilin' Island of Song."
She also wrote two biographies on her famous son.

MYSPACE TO LAUNCH NEW MUSIC SERVICE
|
MySpace said Thursday it will launch an online music venture designed to turn the social networking site's trove of musician profile pages into portals for selling everything from concert tickets and band merchandise to the music itself. Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group Corp. are participating in the new venture, dubbed MySpace Music, which will roll out gradually in coming months.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed, but each of the music companies will receive an unspecified equity stake in the new company, said Chris DeWolfe, MySpace co-founder and chief executive.
MySpace Music will enable artists to sell music downloads, concert tickets, merchandise such as T-shirts through their profile pages and ringtones through News Corp.'s Jamba mobile service unit, MySpace said.
"We believe that the Web is becoming increasingly more social," DeWolfe said during a conference call. "MySpace Music is a new way of experiencing music online that everyone can participate in."
Fans also will be able stream audio and video for free through the profile pages.
DeWolfe said some tracks will be sold without copy-protection safeguards but noted that the major labels had committed only to experimenting with offering content in an unrestricted format.
MySpace has more than 5 million profile pages showcasing major label artists, independents and unsigned acts. All those artists would eventually be able to take advantage of MySpace Music's offerings, the company said.

APPLE CLAIMS TOP US MUSIC RETAIL SPOT -- ITUNES OUTSELLS MAJOR CD RETAILERS FOR THE FIRST TIME
|
Apple has overtaken Wal-Mart to become the biggest music retailer in the US, outselling the big CD retailers for the first time.
Sales at iTunes over January and February also surpassed Best Buy and Amazon, which took third and fourth places respectively.
"We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world," said Eddy Cue, vice president of iTunes at Apple.
Apple quoted sales figures from market research firm NPD Group, which counts one CD as representing 12 tracks, confirming the company's status as number one music retailer.
Hot on the heels of Apple's milestone, MySpace yesterday announced a joint venture with Sony BMG, Warner Music and Universal to offer a music download service that will go head-to-head with iTunes.
The company described MySpace Music as a "360-degree global solution" that would "evolve users ability to discover, share and socialise by adding commerce and music management tools".

UNIVERSAL GOES GREEN WITH GREENCHOICE PACKAGING
|
The insert in more than 20 Universal Music Group titles being introduced as a part of Wal-Mart's "Earth Month" promotion contain a paper insert imbedded with wildflower seeds. It's all part of a growing movement to green the music industry with environmentally friendly packaging and messages.
The albums will be sold in the new REPAK CD package, an all paperboard option containing third-party certified, renewable recycled paper. The REPAK's design features a recessed cavity to hold the disc in place, eliminating the need for a plastic hub or tray and is part of Shorewood Packaging's "greenchoice" program. The new packaging will replace the jewel box version of each title. Those albums will also include the wildflower insert offering three free digital downloads from the UMG catalog.
In 2006, UMe launched the first completely paper-recyclable (sleeve and tray) packaging in the music industry. Since then, more than 10 million carbon neutral packaging have used special eco-friendly materials with UMe reducing the CO2 emissions and carbon footprint by 2400 tons. This lower carbon footprint does not include the reduction of CO2 emission during the transportation due to the lower weight of the special packages (half the weight compared to a jewel case).

PENTHOUSE RECORDS RELINQUISHES MANAGEMENT OF BUJU BANTON
|
Kingston-based Penthouse Records has announced its amicable separation from artiste Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton. In a statement, CEO of Penthouse, Donovan Germain, noted that: “I have been guiding and managing the career of Buju Banton for the last 18 years and the time has come for this chapter to close.”
Mr. Germain noted that having dedicated the last 18 years to building Buju Banton’s career, taking him from obscurity to the pinnacle of international stardom, it was with a sense of pride that he was relinquishing the management of the artiste, to move on to other activities.
He added, “First and foremost, I am a producer and after spending so many years on the road touring, I now feel the need to get back in the studio and get really involved in the production side of the music,” Mr. Germain stated. He emphasized that this was a “mutual decision” which was long in the making. The Penthouse CEO pointed out that Buju Banton would be handling his own affairs under his Gargamel Music outfit.
“Buju is now refurbishing his studio and his entire operations, so he will be able to handle his bookings and all management-related activities.” Mr. Germain stated that he wished Buju continued success and declared that the artiste could feel free to call on his expertise whenever necessary. Penthouse Records has a roster of young artistes including Anthony Cruz, Nikeishia Barnes and Romaine Virgo.

RED STRIPE PULLS OUT OF SUMFEST
|
Liquor giant, Red Stripe, has relinquished its title sponsorship of Reggae Sumfest. Although the company is yet to send out an official statement on the matter, a company executive confirmed to Splash that Red Stripe "will not be the title sponsor for Sumfest this year."
"We will, however, be sending out an official statement soon," the Red Stripe official stated. In the run-up to the annual week-long festival, concerns have been expressed that Red Stripe was on the verge of pulling out of the calendar event, owing to what has been described as the "state of the music" as it relates to an over-abundance of violent lyrics by some dancehall artistes and the militant stance taken by these artistes against homosexuals.
The company executive, however, refused to comment on whether or not this had in any way impacted on Red Stripe's ultimate decision.
It is still unclear whether or not the beer company will be involved at any level with the staging of the premium reggae/dancehall festival, which is celebrating 16 years this year.
Other reports surfacing are that Red Stripe was the official sponsor of the bar at the Africa Unite concert held at the James Bond Beach in February, but the brand had refused any kind of acknowledgement for their sponsorship.
Branded as 'the coolest beer company', Red Stripe has been the the title sponsor of Reggae Sumfest since 2005, branding the event 'Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest'. This partnership has been described as a "marriage made at the bar counter."
Meanwhile, executive director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong, up to press time, could not be reached for a comment.
Over the years, many of reggae/dancehall, r&b and rap's top artistes have appeared on the Sumfest stage. These include Beres Hammond, Shaggy, Morgan Heritage, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Mary J Blige, Beenie Man, Collie Budz, Allison Hinds and Etana.
