JAMROCK REGGAE FESTIVAL, DUBBED JAMMIN
Source: Brittany Somerset, Intrepid Reporter, New York City

The 11th Annual Jamrock Reggae Festival, dubbed “Jammin’ In The City,” took place in monsoon-like Manhattan. The event was scheduled to start at 10pm, however it was almost washed up, due to the raging thunderstorm that racked the city. Most Caribbean folk do not like to get their hair wet; however, despite the pouring rain, the die-hard reggae massive was not to be deterred as they arrived soaking wet, but with their spirits up, ready to hear the likes of Etana the Strong One, Assassin, Ky-mani Marley, Beenieman, Mr.Vegas, and Demarco. Surprise last minute additions to the line-up included world-famous, critically-acclaimed singers, Wayne Wonder, and Da’Ville, who replaced Sanchez, who unfortunately had to cancel his appearance due to a scheduling conflict.

Held at the multi-tiered venue, Hammerstein Ballroom, in Midtown Manhattan, the floor seats were half empty; however, the balconies were full. Da’Ville’s performance was divine, Etana's was effervescent, Ky-Mani’s was cool, Assassin’s was awesome, Wayne’s was wonderful, but Beenie was bored.

Beenie, who almost always closes the show at festival events, due to his power to keep audiences lying in wait for him, was cradling a broken arm in a sling. Always a master of showmanship, he gave a spirited performance; however, he asked the crowd and the promoter, “Can I go home now?” after almost every song, to which the crowd enthusiastically shouted, "No!" After asking the crowd at least three times if he could go home, he addressed the promoter and stated, “You have to do this show earlier next time, I want to go home.” Within five minutes of Beenie’s completed performance, you could practically hear crickets chirping in the empty theater as everyone cleared out in record time, and tromped back into the drizzling rain.

ELEPHANT MAN FOR REGGAE SUMFEST 2K8
Jamaica's Energy God, Elephant Man, is set to thrill fans at this year's Reggae Sumfest, set for July 13-19 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The Bad Boys Record artist, born O'Neal Bryan, is set to bring his usual high-energy performance to the festival that is undoubtedly the world`s best reggae event.

Elephant Man signed with VP records in 2003 and crossed into the pop mainstream with his hit single, "Pon Di River," and his collaborations with The Ying Yang Twins, Lil' Jon, and Twista. Elephant Man's Bad Boy debut, "Let's Get Physical," includes the singles, "Five-O"; featuring Wyclef plus appearances by Swizz Beatz, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, Kat DeLuna, Mario Winans, and more.

He is now on the Bad Boy label and his new single, "Call Her" is heating up the charts.

Reggae Sumfest will kick off with the annual beach party on July 13th. But the real party gets underway on July 17th with the phenomenal dancehall night.

Apart from Elle, acts so far booked for this night include dancehall`s Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Voice Mail, Macka Diamond, Vybz Kartel, Harry Toddler, Busy Signal, Munga Honourable, Ninja Man, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall, Assassin and Mavado.

On Friday July 18th, it's a roots and culture night as Richie Spice, Queen Ifrica, Cocoa Tea, Jah Cure and Pressure are slated to take to the stage. On Saturday, July 19th, the show comes to an end with performances from reggae greats, including John Holt and Beres Hammond as well as Tarrus Riley and Etana.

Reggae Sumfest has been presented consecutively since its launch in 1993 by Summer Fest Productions, headed by Executive Director Johnny Gourzong and Chairman Robert Russell. It is now known across the globe as the reggae event of the summer and attracts thousands annually from the U.S., UK, Canada, Europe, South and Central America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and neighboring Caribbean islands.

Reggae Sumfest is by far the most successful event on the entertainment calendar in Jamaica and recently earned 'Promoter of the Year' and 'Concert of the Year' at the 27th Annual International Reggae and World Music Awards on May 4.

CHEF MAYRA: CHICK PEA CURRY
Ready in: 30 minutes - Serves 4

Ingredients:

1 medium Onion, chopped finely
2 Cloves garlic, chopped
1 1/2 tablespoon Canola oil
2 teaspoons Indian curry powder
3 tablespoons Tomato ketchup
1 can (30 oz) chick peas (aka garbanzos)
1 bunch Coriander leaves, stemmed, chopped (aka cilantro) Optional (I love it)
1 Stick cinnamon (2-inch)
6 Whole cloves (the spice), crushed
4 Cardamom pods, crushed

Directions:
Fry the onions in oil at medium-high heat until golden and translucent, 2-3 minutes. Add garlic, fry for a minute. Add cinnamon, cloves and cardamom, fry for a minute (until the kitchen begins to smell really good!). Now add the curry powder to the onions, fry for a minute or two. As the mixture begins to stick, add the ketchup to make it more pliable. Keep on frying for about 5 minutes, stirring fairly constantly. Once this "base masala" is ready (one hint is if the oil starts separating from the mixture), just add the chickpeas, including the water they are in. Stir to mix, heat until it boils, then cover and lower the heat to medium-low. Cook for 15 minutes, take off heat and stir in coriander leaves. Serve hot, with heated pita, tortillas, Indian bread (roti, naan or puri) or rice.

Note: McCormick's or other American "curry powder" just isn't as good as the powder you can find in Indian stores. In case you are finicky and an Indian store isn't easily available, a fair approximation can be made with 1/2 tsp. coriander, 1/2 tsp. cumin, 1/2 tsp. turmeric, 1/4-1/2 tsp. hot chili powder.

Love, Chef Mayra

PEACE STARTS WITH PATIENCE
True peace starts with patience. Patience starts with the parents and their children and spreads to the neighbors and then the whole town, then to the cities, the states and countries. If all countries had patience, we would have no war. So what is patience? It is the art of practicing no being angry. Don't follow the anger. Stay with patience and patience leads you to compassion.
