BRAZILBEAT BRING HEAT OF CARNAVAL TO SOUTH ISLAND WINTER
|
Electro-Carnaval featuring BrazilBeat Sound System - DJ Hamish Pinkham Tues 1 July - Queenstown @ Subculture Thurs 3 July - Dunedin @ The Backstage Sat 5 July - Christchurch @ The Civic (The Drop)
The East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand, has a sunny reputation to uphold. Gisborne, being the First City of the Sun and all, has more than its share of heatseekers for a town of its size. But beyond surfers and the Rhythm & Vines festival, Gisborne is also home to a unique music group, BrazilBeat Sound System.
BBSS is percussionist and MC Nego Beto and DJ Mara. BBSS specialise in one thing: raising the temperature on a dance floor, Brazilian style. And that's exactly what they intend to do when they hit the South Island with their "Electro-Carnaval" the first week of July. The live-act started mashing up house beats with live percussion in San Francisco, USA in 2000. They spent the summer in Aotearoa the following year, and have been spreading the love here ever since, performing at clubs and festivals like Rhythm & Vines, Soundsplash, Splore, Parihaka, uni Orientations and most recently Homegrown. Internationally renowned Brazilian percussionist Nego Beto created the project after playing in many different bands, recording, producing and educating in five continents over his 20-year music career. Highlights include touring with reggae legends The Wailers and working as a producer for MTV in Brazil. In 2006 he participated in B-Live/Loop's OE: Brazil project, the New Zealand tour. Beto's hard-case MC style and riveting performances on congas, timbales, bongos, drum machines and varied percussion instruments send audiences to delirium, while DJ Mara provides the thunderous basslines. Planting the Brazilian flag in Oceania, BBSS have developed a strong underground following in New Zealand.
BrazilBeat released their debut full length album "Nova" last November on their own fledgeling label Belezza. The Waikato Times review: "Festival favourites DJ Mara and Nego Beto grab you by the scruff of the neck with their grunty Latin-flavoured house and breaks, and toss you into the middle of the dancefloor--where you have a damn fine time shaking your booty. A long-awaited, fun and uplifting debut."
While Nego Beto and his drums have recently crossed Cook Strait with other bands, BrazilBeat Sound System have not played in the South since 2004, when they rocked the dance tent at the legendary Destination festival in the Canterbury high country. BBSS are excited for their return and the chance to lay down their brand new original sounds and some of the hottest riddims from around the globe. The current mix covers a wide spectrum of genres, from electro-breaks to drum & bass and of course baile-funk, the grimy Brazilian ghetto dance music that has become a worldwide phenomenon.
A cohort from the "East Coast", Hamish Pinkham joins BBSS for the Electro-Carnaval tour. Founder of Rhythm & Vines, promoter of the sold-out Kiwi-themed "Endeavor" concert in London (2007), and founding member of the folk-rock band Blackbird, Pinkham is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and DJ with a penchant for a good party! His yearly travels to the UK and Europe ensure a fresh dose of cutting edge music. On the decks he spins a colourful hybrid of indie/nu-rave/disco-punk.
BrazilBeat Sound System will return to the States at the end of July for their US album release tour, with shows in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

THE FOURTH OF JULY
THE AGGROLITES RYAN SCROGGINS & THE TRENCHTOWN TEXANS , PROPER VILLAIN SNDSYTM
They are brothers from another mother and willing to shed blood for family. Led by singer Jesse Wagner, this group of five L.A. musicians mixes old school reggae with rock, soul and funk, heavily influenced by The Meters, Toots & the Maytals and The Clash. Their sound is a thick blend of rhythm and melody, seasoned by years of love. The result is the infectious sound called "dirty reggae." "The Aggrolites are certainly rooted in tradition, but there's a soul that permeates through the group's music and keeps The Aggrolites from being a genre rehash," states www.latimes.com. San Diego's North County Reader continues, "The band has a secret weapon in their singer, Jesse Wagner. Whether he knows it or not, he is an authentic R&B torch. His unlikely voice has the explosiveness of a Jackie Wilson with the growling soul grind of a Bobby Womack."
Ryan Scroggins and his Trenchtown Texans join us from Houston and bring their rocksteady roots with 'em while the Proper Villain hits us with the premier of his live band including members from The Stingers, Contra Coup, and the Pocket.

CHEF MAYRA: WHAT EXACTLY IS A PRESSURE COOKER?
|
Pressure cookers look like other kitchen pots, except their lids are a bit more elaborate. How they work is that they completely seal the pot. When the liquid inside boils, it is trapped inside the pot. Having nowhere else to go, steam builds up pressure. This results in higher cooking temperatures and shorter cooking times.
The pressure of the trapped steam can be measured in pound of force per square inch or PSI. The gasket or rubber ring is another important component of today's pressure cookers, as this makes a seal that traps in steam and heat and allows pressure to build. The gasket fits on the side part of the cover. In order to make sure you get a good seal, make sure all the components are clean and free from food particles. Even in the old days, most pressure cooker disasters could usually be attributed to user error. Nonetheless, today's pressure cookers offer a much higher safety level than their predecessors. Today's pressure cookers have at least three valves for safety and will automatically release pressure should it build too high. Different types of pressure cookers have different styles of valves (refer to the instructions that came with yours), but if you hear hissing or noise coming from the cooker, it's the valve telling you to check the pressure. Why Use a Pressure Cooker At All? You may be asking, even though today's pressure cookers are safer than the old fashioned ones, why take a chance at all with something that cooks under pressure? I felt the same way until I actually tried pressure cooking. Now I'd be hard pressed to live without my pressure cooker. There are lots of advantages to using this valuable kitchen tool including: Nutritional Boost - Due to the shorter cooking time and the fact that food is cooked in less liquid that gets boiled away, more vitamins and minerals are retained than with conventional cooking methods. Saves Time - Food cooks up to 70% faster in a pressure cooker, making it a wonderful tool for when you come home after work and have to get dinner on the table in a hurry. You can put ingredients in the pressure cooker and by the time you're finished tidying up the kitchen you can have a wholesome, hearty home cooked meal. Energy Efficient - As less cooking time is needed, less energy is needed to accomplish the task. Cooler Kitchen - As all the steam and heat stays within the pot, your kitchen stays cooler than with traditional stovetop or oven methods. Cleaner Kitchen - As all pressure cooker foods are cooked in a covered pot, there are no messy splashes or spatters to clean up and no boiled over foods - ever! How to Buy a Pressure Cooker You'll find a variety of pressure cookers on the market, usually ranging from 4 to 8 quarts. If you can only afford one, a 6 quart model is good for most jobs, but goes larger if you have a big family. The pots are made of aluminum or stainless steel and like with all cookware, you get what you pay for. I prefer the stainless steel models as they are generally higher quality, heavier pots, which always results in better cooking with less danger of food sticking to the bottom. The heavier stainless steel models are also great because you can brown or sauté foods in them before cooking under pressure, without dirtying another pot. RED STRIPE HONOURS CONTRACT
|
Red Stripe has reiterated its strong support for the music industry. In recent weeks, there has been a negative campaign surrounding the beer giant's announcement that it will pull its sponsorship from live events until the quality of the lyrics has improved.
Reliable sources divulged that in keeping with its contractual obligations to Summerfest Productions, the organisers of Reggae Sumfest, the sponsorship fees would be paid over. It is understood that more than US$300,000 (J$21.3 million) was included in the contract and that Red Stripe would honour this agreement.
The contract clearly states that a large portion of sponsorship must be paid at signing, an instalment in July and the remainder after the event has been staged.
According to the sources, Red Stripe has made the first payment and is following through with the remaining portions.
For more than five years, Red Stripe has been the title sponsor for the reggae festival and has been a major sponsor for many live events including Sting, Reggae Campfire, Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and Bacchanal Jamaica. Despite pleading with the artistes to tone down the violent lyrical content in their music over the years, the response has been the same, a constant breach of contractual obligations to the beer company.
Seeing the need to set a certain standard for both performances and event execution and management, Red Stripe became instrumental in forming a coalition to ensure that the artistes abide by the code when performing. Each time the code was infringed by one or several artistes, the beer giant then took a firm stance to withdraw its sponsorship from all live events until the violent and raunchy lyrics were abandoned.
Last year, through the Live Red campaign, Red Stripe staged several events to the tune of more than $20 million. The Red Summer programme alone had run the company about $8 million.
According to sources, the summer campaign will still take place this year and will be even bigger and better than the last.
"There will be many more parties and Red Stripe plans to completely dominate the party scene. People are complaining that Red Stripe has pulled its support from dancehall but what they don't realise is that at all of these events, it is 'fit-for-airplay' dancehall music that is constantly being played," the source said.
When contacted, Maxine Whittingham-Osborne, head of corporate communcations at Red Stripe, continued to affirm the company's position.
"We stand by our decision and the statement that was issued. At this time, Red Stripe's position is that we will not sponsor live music performances. Red Stripe is willing to review its position if and when we see an improvement in the lyrical content of some of the music," Whittingham-Osborne said.
"We are currently exploring new marketing initiatives that we believe will enliven the party landscape and demonstrate our continued allegiance to the entertainment industry," she added.
She was quick to point out that Red Stripe's support extends far beyond entertainment to cover many other areas.
"Don't forget our strong support of the Reggae Boyz over the years, our continued contributions to the sectors of health, education, sport and to the economy," she said.
"As an alcohol company, we promote responsible drinking, not because it is good for us but because it is good for Jamaica and our consumers. It is in this vein, as a good corporate citizen, why we cannot allow ourselves to partner with any event that may end up being coloured or marred by violence, foul lyrics or attacks on any group, even though these events would lead to more exposure for our brand and increase the bottom line. We have to be responsible," she stated.

BYRON LEE & THE DRAGONAIRES FOR NYC INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL, JULY 27, 2008, NEW YORK
|
Caribbean music legend Byron Lee, the first Jamaican band leader to achieve an international following will perform with his band the Drangonaires at the International Food Festival - 'Yam Jam' - on Sunday, July 27 2008 at Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, NY
Formed in 1956 and playing a big band-ska sound, Bryon Lee and the Dragonaries got their big break playing songs on the soundtrack of the first James Bond film Dr. No, where they also appeared in the scene at Pussfeller's club. He has also had a long association with soca, releasing some of the biggest songs in the genre. In 1990, his long time dream became a reality with the launching of Jamaica Carnival, which has grown to become one of the biggest events in the Caribbean. He has dabbled in dancehall music, playing a crucial role as producer and musician.
Lee also had success as a promoter and owner of the Dynamic Sounds label, which was one of the biggest reasons for the explosion in popularity of Jamaican music in the late 1960s and early 70's. With 50 years in the music business, 50 albums and over 150 awards, he continues to command respect and admiration world-wide. A few years ago, he was presented with National Honors and Awards for his outstanding achievements in the performing arts by former Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon PJ Patterson at an Independence Gala held at Jamaica House.
This year's International Food Festival will be hosted by comedian Oliver Samuels. The king of laughter, who has won numerous accolades in his career including an Actor Boy Awards in Jamaica, is currently displaying his legendary comedic skills in Patrick Brown's River Bottom where he plays Capo, the spiritual leader, MP and storm whisperer of River Bottom.
The International Food Festival will feature Caribbean foods from various islands, exciting rides for the kids, Dunk Tank, Moon Walk, Slides, Obstacle Course, performances by some of the finest New York acts and entertainment for the entire family.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS
Dearest Beloved Ones,
Much has been accomplished in the recent period of time that has strengthened God's light on the Earth and within individuals. Your own transformational process has been accelerated and moved to a new level of depth. For some this has enabled breakthroughs that were not possible before. For others this new level has brought to a head issues and aspects of consciousness that were previously buried...
Many souls have passed through a period of more focused and intensified cleansing that has been deeply productive but also that has left a residue of fatigue or even exhaustion in the body
Dearest ones, you may feel called to recharge your body, mind and spirit by spending time in nature, close to the Earth, and breathing in the fresh air of the new day that is dawning. Accelerate your intake of pure water, and continue to release yourself from objects, situations and relationships in your life that no longer serve your spirit. Enable yourself to see new perspectives and viewpoints by changing your surroundings and environment, and by upgrading your own living situation to reflect the new energy that is manifesting. Even if you are still in an older or expired situation, affirm the new by physically changing your living environment to reflect what you are working towards and waiting for...
Dearest ones, the pace of change has been steadily increasing, however is still relatively slow compared to how things will be when the light reaches a critical mass on the Earth. The higher dimensions of light that are steadily manifesting do so at a pace that is the maximum possible to allow all of physical matter to absorb the new energies and transition into the higher dimensions. You would experience the evidence of this most strongly in two ways, through changes in your consciousness and changes in your physical body. Some souls are able to see or feel the higher dimensions of light that have manifested, though for most this perception is still covered...
What is most important at this time is that you continue to attune deeply to the inner wisdom of your heart, and to follow humbly and gratefully the calling of spirit. You are being led, through ways that may seem mysterious or unknowable, and you can trust God to lead you perfectly, even when you have little or no understanding of what is going on...
For some souls, it is necessary to let go of the need to know or understand, in order to receive a deeper knowing that comes from God and not from the mind
Dearest ones, you can even trust the pain that comes up for you during this time. Whether it is physical or emotional pain, it is serving a purpose of healing. By accepting it and moving forward in the secure embrace of God's love, you are being led towards what your innermost being most deeply longs for. For some souls, you are led through a long period that feels like you are wandering through the desert. Your faith is tested, and there appears to be little support or confirmation for what you are going through...
We bless especially all those who are enduring such long and difficult trials, for the purpose of these often are a preparation for a spiritual level of service that may or may not be known to the human, embodied self
Dearest ones, may the blessings and peace and the comfort of God's love be upon you now and in each moment of this new time

The standard of success in life isn't the things. It isn't the money or the stuff ~~~~ it is absolutely the amount of joy you feel.
