JAMAICAN ARTIST CHRISTOPHER GONZALEZ DIES
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Christopher Gonzalez, whose expressionistic sculptures and paintings earned him a reputation as a pioneer in Jamaican art, has died, according to a longtime family friend. He was 65.

The acclaimed Jamaican artist died Saturday at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay of cancer, said Kay Osbourne, managing director of Television Jamaica.

Gonzalez, born in 1943 in the central parish of Manchester, is best known for creating a controversial 9-foot (2.7-meter) statue of reggae legend Bob Marley, which is housed at a museum in Ocho Rios.

The bronze statue, which depicted the beloved Jamaican musician with a distorted face and a tree trunk for a lower body, was pelted with rocks and fruit at its 1983 unveiling in Kingston on the second anniversary of Marley's death. Angry reggae fans said Gonzalez's abstract statue bore little resemblance to the songwriter.

Gonzalez, a graduate and former faculty member of the Jamaica School of Art, also was known for two bronze reliefs commemorating the island's independence and his work on the tomb of the country's first prime minister, Norman Manley.

Gonzalez is survived by his wife, Champayne Clarke-Gonzalez, and six children, according to Radio Jamaica.

CHEF MAYRA: MUSHROOM-ARTICHOKE LASAGNA
Try this delicious meal for your next dinner party: Serves 16

Using convenient no-boil lasagna noodles eliminates the chore of boiling and draining the noodles before assembly. If you are using noodles that require precooking, it’s a good idea to rinse cooked noodles with cold water frequently to keep them separate before assembling the casserole.

Low-fat silken tofu is best suited to dishes such as lasagna because of the tofu’s creamy texture and neutral flavor. Make this delicious lasagna in advance, and reheat before serving.

Mushroom-Artichoke Mixture

2 tsp. Olive oil
1/4 tsp. Crushed red pepper
4 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 cup sliced scallions
1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
6 oz. Portobello mushrooms, diced
8 oz. White mushrooms, sliced
1 13 3/4-oz. Can (1 3/4 cups) quartered artichoke hearts, drained and diced
4 Tbs. Tomato paste
1/4 cup Merlot or vegetable stock
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
1/2 Tbs. Dried basil
1/2 Tbs. Dried oregano

Tofu Ricotta Mixture

3 12.3-oz. Pkg. Lite silken tofu, drained
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chopped scallions
4 Tbs. Mellow white miso
1/2 cup dry vermouth or vegetable stock
1/3 cup soy Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup nutritional yeast
1 tsp. Dried thyme
1/4 tsp. Coarsely ground black pepper
1 1/2 25-oz. Jars (3 cups) Roasted Red Pepper tomato sauce
1 9-oz. Pkg. No-boil lasagna noodles

Directions
Preheat oven to 375F.
To make Mushroom-Artichoke Mixture: Heat oil and crushed red pepper in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat about 1 minute. Add garlic, scallions and bell peppers, and sauté for 3 minutes. Add mushrooms and artichokes, and cook mixture 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low, and add tomato paste and Merlot, stirring to blend. Add yeast, parsley, basil and oregano. Mix thoroughly, cook 10 minutes and set aside.

To make Tofu Ricotta Mixture: Mash tofu with potato masher. Add garlic and scallions. Combine miso and vermouth in small bowl, blending with fork. Add mixture to tofu. Add soy Parmesan cheese, yeast, thyme and black pepper, mix thoroughly and set aside.

Spread layer of tomato sauce evenly on bottom of 9x13-inch baking pan. Top with layer of uncooked noodles. Add broken noodles around edges for even fit. Spoon Tofu Ricotta Mixture evenly over noodles. Top with another layer of noodles, and cover noodles with tomato sauce. Layer with Mushroom-Artichoke Mixture, cover with layer of noodles and top with remaining tomato sauce. Sprinkle generously with soy Parmesan cheese. Cover lasagna with foil.
Bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil, and bake 15 minutes more. Remove from oven, and set aside for at least 15 minutes before serving.

JAMROCK Magazine presents the Jamaican musical legend Beres Hammond on September 6, 2008 for his highly anticipated concert, "A Moment In Time". The concert coincides with his highly anticipated October album release bearing the same name.

Known to many as the originator of "Lover's Rock" or the "Otis Redding of Reggae", Beres Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over soulful reggae riddims for over three decades. From his early days as the lead singer of the '70s funk-reggae infused band Zap Pow, Beres has consistently produced hits and number one singles. As the cornerstone to Lover's Rock, he has inspired the next generation of reggae soul singers and international superstars like Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys.

Beres Hammond has repeatedly sold out some of the largest and most prestigious venues like the Theatre at Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. This time around he makes his way to the elegant West Chester County Center, tucked away in the outskirts of New York City. The lavishly decorated venue gives an intimate feel, keeping fans up close and personal with Beres.

Fans can look forward to hearing timeless classics like, "Tempted to Touch" and "Rock Away" as well as brand new material from his eagerly awaited album to be released October 2008.

GHANA'S EBO'O TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM NEXT QUARTER
The Obuasi born Fante native, Andrew Kwabena Adisi popularly known in showbiz circles as Ebo’o is gearing up for his debut release titled Ebo’ony slated for the last quarter of 2008. Ebo’o is no stranger to the music industry. His background includes songwriting credit and features for artists like A Plus.

Fans can expect an album with lyrics detailing Ebo’s life experiences through to the hardships faced by human, love for ourselves and God, need for peace and unity, change in society and about the need to hold on and not give up in life. Praising Jehovah is the ultimate according to Ebo’o so the album could not have been complete without a song titled ‘Jehovah’. The album is rounded out with productions by Kwajo Cinqo, Winner Papa Noi and Junaid with collaborations from Kwajo Cinqo and Tic Tac. A young fanatic reveals “I’ve never seen an artist like (Ebo’o) - a superb writer and performer. I can’t wait to hear his new album!”

His first hit single, ‘Once Twice’ was released onto the Ghanaian music market in November 2005 and after commanding maximum radio and T.V. play all over the country, it transcended the boundaries of Ghana to other African countries and the rest of the world, notably Europe. This earned him recognition on Africa’s A rated T.V. station CHANNEL O. His video also received attention from MTV and Afro-European networks like OBETV as well as many others around the globe. Rave reviews have been written about this extraordinary artiste too.

Ebo’o commands attention wherever he performs with his captivating voice and conscious reggae feel. In most quarters in the showbiz industry he has been likened (justifiably) to the likes of Jamaica’s Damien Marley, Reggae band Steel Pulse, Senegalese Akon, South Africa’s Lucky Dube and Anthony B. Indeed he is touted as the world’s next Bob Marley, which one readily agrees with after listening to this multitalented artiste.

As a professional musical artiste, Ebo’o has opened up for internationally acclaimed artistes like Jay Z, Shaggy, Marlon Asher, Wayne Marshall and a host of others all at ‘A’ rated concerts in Ghana.

With several more projects, Ebo’o will definitely get the world to pay attention. For more information, email bingybouy@yahoo.com, eboonyland@yahoo.com or trendsettersmail@gmail.com or buzz him on +233 24 4710 435 or +233 24 993 1235

International Farmers : : “Closer Than Close”
With their Reggae-Rock debut, “Closer than Close”, Los Angeles based International Farmers hits the ground running.

Formed by childhood friends Danny Primavera (vocals, guitar) and Jeremy Odom (bass), transplants from Atlanta and the DC area, the two added Preston Nelson (drums) son of Juan Nelson, longtime bassist of Ben Harper, when relocating to LA in 2004.  This band of basics was expanded upon and perfected by the addition of funky keyboardist, Jamie Bullock, soulful female vocals by Lara Beers and young saxophonist, Brian Landau.

Two years later, the band emerges with an upbeat sound of hip rhythms and unique melodies, built on traditional reggae roots and exploring the limits of harmony and lyrical substance.

The eclectic 13 track album takes the listener on a dynamic musical journey, incorporating positive vibes and inspirational choruses.
Sun-drenched tones in “Jealousy” and “Slow Down” keep the reggae-rock edge intact, and provide contrast with sweetly charming “Silly Bird”. Laid back grooves “Only Questions” and “Open Road” lend further depth to this collaboration of instrumental and melodic hooks.

This catchy recording represents the best that California has to offer towards a fresh direction of feel-good music.

Kwame Bediako - Rastawise : : "Forward Ever"
Artist: Kwame Bediako - Rastawise known as Komfo meaning priest in his Ghanian dialect.

Song Name: "One Man No Dub"

'Forward Ever' is roots reggae artist Kwame Bediako's 3rd release to date. Having worked in the studio with notables such as Sidney Mills of Steel Pulse and Junior Marvin of The Wailers and appearing 'Live' with many reggae greats like Third World, Mutabaruka, Pato Banton and many others, it is only a matter of time until Kwame becomes as well known on the world stage. This eight song CD is a mixture of roots and culture guaranteed to make you move aside from instilling a crucial message of harmony.

'One Man No Dub' is only one of the radio friendly international styled tracks included on 'Forward Ever'. A solid groove complete with lush horn arrangements by Georges Kouakou (Culture, Alpha Blondy), this uplifting song duly promotes the message that together anything is possible and while separate we will continue to fail.

Kwame has been the recipient of many industry awards and honorable mentions including: Martin International's Chicago Reggae Music Awards "Best Artist" and "Most Culture-Oriented Band".
