A BID FOR STEFFENS' REGGAE COLLECTION
|
Perhaps best known for his reggae archives, which include the world's largest collection of Bob Marley material, Roger Steffens has reggae memorabilia that spans three decades. And after trying for seven years to ensure the archives ended up in their rightful place in Jamaica, Steffens is now taking bids from elsewhere.
Driven by his passion for reggae music, Roger Steffens most recent project is the Reggae Scrapbook which he co-authored with photojournalist Peter Simon.
Up For Bid From His Collection? Nine thousand reggae records, about a third of which are autographed by the artistes involved. Five thousand reggae, ska and rocksteady CDS, two thousand hours of videos and DVDs, more than 10,000 hours of cassette tape recordings including rare interviews, plus an unlimited number of live shows and more than 120 cubic feet of newspaper and magazine clippings. And this is just a sample of the musical treasure. As Garry Steckles said in his article, "The goodies up for grabs are enough to make any self-respecting reggae fan drool."

CHEF MAYRA'S VEGAN ALTERNATIVES TO GELATIN
|
Gelatin serves both nutritional and culinary roles in nonvegetarian diets; however, a lot of vegetarians and all vegans do not consume gelatin in its many forms because it is often created out of boiled pig skins and dissolved or processed veal cartilage and bones.
This leaves vegetarians with a gap in cooking functionality when a recipe calls for a gel or thickening agent. It also leaves vegetarians with fewer options if they need a source of gelatin to increase bone and cartilage health.
If you are a vegetarian and you are looking for something to replace gelatin, do not despair as there are alternatives.
Here are some alternative options for you: 1. Use a rice starch alternative. A&B Ingredients recently developed a rice starch alternative to gelatins that mimics the cooking functionality of gelatins closely. 2. Use a soy-based alternative. Soyfoods USA developed NuSoy Gel, a gelatin alternative which was created entirely out of of soy isoflavones and contains 100% of your vitamin c recommended daily allowance. 3. Use seaweed-based alternatives. Agar-agar, for instance, is a seaweed based alternative to gelatin that can simulate the culinary functions of gelatin. 4. Increase your calcium intake. One component of gelatin supplements that allegedly increases joint health is calcium. If you want to increase your calcium intake without eating gelatin, you can simply consume more calcium-fortified foods and even take supplements. 5. Increase your vitamin C intake. Another component of gelatin supplements that allegedly increases joint health is vitamin c. You can increase your vitamin c intake by consuming more citrus fruit. 6. Increase your glucosamine intake. No foods contain glucosamine, but you can increase your intake by purchasing supplements at your local grocery store or pharmacy. This is rumored to improve joint health if taken regularly. To reiterate - gelatin has two major functions: it works as a thickening agent for foods and is rumored to improve joint health; both of these functions can easily be mimicked by structural and nutritional alternatives.

KING JAMMY SIGNS WITH VP RECORDS
|
King Jammy, the undisputed ruler and originator of the digital reggae movement, signed an exclusive online and mobile distribution agreement with VP Records. The label will have access to digitally distribute and market the complete body of work by one of the most influential reggae producers.
VP Records will continue to build on his legacy, offering his entire catalog of crucial hits as well as rare hard-to-find cuts. Olivier Chastan of VP Records says “King Jammy is one of the most important producers in the history of reggae music. Only small portions of his catalog have been released over the years. We estimate that close to 500 albums worth of music have not been released and we intend to make all of those musical treasures available digitally over the course of 2009.”
King Jammy also expressed his excitement, “After almost 30 years of making music, I thought it was time to look at my vaults and release some of the music I have made over the years. I found music that I did not even remember recording! Fans can expect a huge and varied selection from lost dub tapes to unreleased albums by legends like Frankie Paul, Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown to name a few.” more info at: http://www.myspace.com/kingjammys

HOPE AND HEALING AT THE 23RD ANNUAL MUSICIAN’S PICNIC FUND RAISER
|
Article By: Gary Greene
This years move to Topanga, California, proved to be a true success for the 23rd annual picnic, a star studded event that for the first time in it’s history followed the second step of THE 12 –STEP program’s main principle …”OPEN-MINDEDNESS” and invited the healing powers of REGGAE MUSIC to be a part of the celebration.
The first booked band for this event was Pato Banton. His spiritual and principled approach to life and lyric is what attracted the board committee, responsible for booking the artists. Reggae band Better Chemistry was also on the second stage, bringing an added inspiration to the 3000+ adoring, recovering music fans.
When Pato & The Mystic Roots Band came on, they started with "GWARN”, went on to Bob Marley's “JAMMIN”, as the crowd flashedback, woke-up and rushed the stage...now the party had officially started.
He went on to sing ONE PEOPLE, UNIVERSAL LOVE, and then one just for recovery that I'm sure everyone could relate to, titled, 'NEVER GIVE IN'. It was so full of energy, as Pato always is, the message came thru and he gave a small talk about this being no place for EGO (EDGING GOD OUT)…that our longest journey in life is from our head to our heart…and ended up after “GO PATO’ with the kids on stage, finishing with 'LIFE IS A MIRACLE’.
There was a lot of HOPE on Sunday Sept 14th, and thank you to all of the trusted committee servants, and volunteers, who spent countless hours of their time to put this on, and got past all judgement, contradiction..and self wills…Thank JAH, GOD..THANK THE POWER OF THE 12 STEPS AND PRINCIPLES WITHIN. http://www.myspace.com/avisionofmusicbygarygreen

GOOD THINGS FOR DAVID KIRTON
|
David Kirton's live performance at the 2008 Royal Chelsea Flower Show produced more than vibes among the beautiful and exotic blooms, it also secured a distribution deal with the United Kingdom's # 1 music Distributor Nova Pinnacle. His award-winning album Time for Change will be launched in the UK September 30th. Kirton's guitar-driven hybrid of rock, pop and reggae moves past the reverent Caribbean Rhythms of the past and on to the airwaves, dance floors and digital devices of future.
His music touches the heart, head and feet, making you feel, think and dance. Kirton pulled a hat trick at the 2008 Barbados Music Awards winning Reggae artist of Year, Reggae Song of Year (Green Camouflage) and Best video. "By combining music and art, we find ourselves in a place where we're free to explore thoughts and visions which are otherwise hidden inside our minds," said David Kirton. "The two become one. Collaboration is natural when you find an artist that speaks your language - music is art and art is music."
David Kirton will be doing a series of interviews, live performances and promotional activities in London Sept 30 - October 6th in support of the release.

NEW ALBUM FROM HORACE ANDY
|
Article excerpted from: kongoi magazine
Horace Andy is undeniably one of Jamaica's most distinguished and beloved vocalists. As a roots reggae songwriter and singer, he is known for his falsetto vocals and hit songs such as "Government Land", "You Are My Angel", "Skylarking" and his cover of "Ain't No Sunshine". In 2008, Horace Andy brings us his voice again through his new album, On Tour.
On Tour is the latest album to showcase this exceptional voice and classic production skills. A slightly more contemporary sound is evidence that his finger remains on the musical pulse, yet the soul of his music is still very much rooted in the sound of his birthplace, a place where he comes back to record this album in his own studio. Andy has not only produced the whole record but also plays almost all the instruments on it. On Tour takes us through a journey of his last year on the road, referencing the places he’s been, sights, people and emotions, yet the sound remains distinctively Horace Andy’s…warm, melodic reggae. The new album proves there’s never been a time when he wasn't releasing exceptional records.

REGGAE INSPIRED EDUCATION FOR KIDS!
|
Grammy-award winning dancehall artiste Shaggy has got his feet wet in a brand new genre - children's literature. Shaggy Parrot and the Reggae Band is a book-and-CD set made for kids aged two to six years with a serious message about the environment.
Colourful
illustrations by Trinidadian John Mendes feature local scenery and some
of Jamaica's indigenous marine life. The CD, which boasts nine tracks
by reggae's only diamond-selling artiste, contains portions of the
story, with Shaggy, christened Orville Burrell, also reading for the
title role. The music on the CD was created by Sean Paul's musical
director, Rupert Bent III, Jana's brother, as well as members of Sean's
Pauls' backing band, Badda Banz.
Shaggy Parrot and the Reggae
Band is the brainchild of Jana Bent, who was among the team of writers
which included Kellie Magnus, Nicole Hoo Fatt, Rebecca Packer and
Veronica Salter. Bent said she came up with the idea after reading a
children's book introducing toddlers to jazz music. "My daughter really
loved it," she said, and I realised we needed to do this for reggae.
Once we were into the production we decided to go all the way with the
educational aspect of it." The book covers several themes required by
the Ministry of Education's syllabus, making it a valuable teaching
tool as well. Magnus, creator of the Little Lion book series, said
her motivation was a heartfelt desire to promote literacy at the early
childhood level. "It was a great experience working with a team of
Jamaican writers and musicians," said Magnus.
With a launch
slated for November, the book will benefit two of Shaggy's favorite
causes, St Andrew's Bustamante Hospital for Children and the Tatiana
McIntosh Scholarship fund, based in Florida.

ORIGINAL SON OF MAN : : JUST A GUITAR AND A SONG
Listening to Sonofman one does not just hear the words, they feel the passion. He could be likened to a cross between Jamaican singer Bob Marley and Dominican Nasio Fontaine. His diction is impeccable and his delivery is well balanced. Background and foreground music flow beautifully.
Of the fourteen songs three are most outstanding. (1) "Ciceron to Soweto" he pays tribute to Lucky Dube, the late South African musician. He tells the story of Dube's success as a musician and as an individual. Those who had never heard of Lucky Dube can feel him through Sonofman's song.
(2) "Lonesome Track" seems to be the best. Any upcoming musician can relate to the tune. It tells of the singer's feelings, the stagnation he experiences remaining in one place for too long and the desire to spread his wings to more meaningful places. A great listen.
(3) Carry Guitar" - he tells of his penchant to often carry his music wherever he goes. Not armed and dangerous with weapons of destruction, but of music and love to share with the world.

MORNING PRAYER
O Jah, early in the morning I pray to you.
Help me to pray
And to concentrate my thoughts on you:
I cannot do this alone.
In me there is darkness,
But with you there is light;
I am lonely, but you do not leave me;
I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;
I am restless, but with you there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;
I do not understand your ways,
But you know the way for me
Restore me to freedom,
And enable me to live now
That I may answer before you and before me.
Lord, whatever this day may bring, Your name be praised. Amen.
